Trenches - uticabengalfan - 01-08-2025
I know the game has changed and evolved in the new sexy area of passing and high scoring games but im of the mindset that football always has and always will be a game won in the trenches. It has been criminal of this organization the amount of hits Burrow has taken in his career (that blames goes on EVERYONE in that building). These next few hires are crucial for the future of this team and fan base. O line coach, d coordinator and d line coach has to be guys that prioritize the lines!!! Have to control the lines to allow Joe to work and our linebackers and secondary to play. Any secondary in the NFL is gonna suck behind this d line that generates zero pressure. Heres to a hopeful brighter future and a team built to play in the AFC North

For sure
I still 100% believe this teams biggest weakness has been the trenches, bar none, the last few years. In order to compete week in and week out next season we need to seriously address that issue this off-season.

And especially when you're in a division that feasts on stopping the run with excellent DL and running the ball it's even more imperative.

Even an offensive genius like Andy Reid knows the value of being strong in the trenches.

If you have two Good Tackles, which I believe the Bengals Have, then filling the interior line can not be that difficult.
Cappa and Volson have to go.

It can be really challenging, especially when the management doesn't value spending much money at those positions.

Yes, ha, point taken. But, in the land of the NFL, give a team two high end tackles, and a once a decade Qb; most will find a way to make the line very good.

You can't get much worse then either of those two were this year. It wouldn't be expensive to get average play. According to PFF they were the worst or near very bottom. Cappa this year was one of the worst ever to play a whole season.

JaMarr Chase isn't the only triple crown winner on this team. Guard Alex Cappa won the dubious triple crown of allowing the most pressures, hurries and sacks of any Guard in the NFL this year. Cordell Volson, a player that I once had high hopes for, was runner up in all 3 of those categories. So no, you really can't get worse Guards than what the Bengals had out there this season.

Thus, it should not be hard for the bengals to significantly improve both positions with even just league avg FA replacements.

Here's the thing, Cappa was decent in Tampa. I don't know if it was the coaching or the scheme that made him fall off the cliff.

Hes been a bengal for 3 full seasons....tampa was 4 years ago

And he's not exactly "lit it up" in any of the seasons that he's been a Bengal. It just happens that he really stunk it up this year.

Well odd that 3 of the top 4 defenses in yards giving up did not make the playoffs (Titans, Jets and Dolphins)

Right, Cappa has never been great, just serviceable to medium I guess? But this season he face-planted HARD! Not sure what caused this? Is he just past his prime? Was it scheme change? I dunno
And Volson has shown flashes of being ok in the past. Not sure if that is purely on the dline's he's faced in his "good" spells? But at any rate he stunk in the big picture as well this season.
Bottom line - we have to have two quality starting level guards for Joe next season. HAVE TO, we can't afford to ride with the "ok, they'll probably do better next year" wave.

Well said Utica. You can see the best teams in the NFL and they are in the Playoffs right now. Most all are built from the inside out. It is actually
pretty amazing we nearly made the Playoffs with how bad multiple players are in our trenches even with how good Joe, Ja'Marr and Trey were.
Imagine this team built like the Eagles in the trenches, or the Lions when they are healthy....
It is essential in bringing in the right trench coaches this time around to put us over the top. So happy Hobby and Pollack are gone.

Cappa was derailed at the end of 2022 by injury and the team failed to see the severity of it and act. Volson it is hard to say - when you look at him the main issue is he sets too high and lets rushers get into his cheat - once that happens no lineman can anchor. By now he should be setting correctly but doesn't.
So we need 2 Guards. But they need to be Guards whose strong suits align properly with how this offense operates and especially how Burrow plays QB. That is critical. This seems (to me) to indicate needing large Guards but ones with a bit more lateral mobility; and ESPECIALLY Guards who are technically sound and anchor well.

Completely agree, Cappa's injury has to be part of the story along with Volson playing too high and not having the balance to get low like
say Mims does well. Mims is taller than Volson and gets lower because of his great balance and technique. Happy the new OL coach will
have Mims to work with along with Orlando Brown at the Tackle spots. Karras would be much better with a couple new Guards on both
sides of him that have better balance and like you say more lateral mobility. Technique is a big issue at Guard as well.
A new OL coach that can coach up our technique would be huge.

49ers are going to release Javon Hargrave. He only played 3 games last season because of a torn bicep.

I believe cappa's best pff season was like a 72 or 73 I would call that average at best not really even decent IMO.
