I would not count on him overmuch. That’s true RE: Lucas Patrick - Frank Booth - 03-22-2025 You guys just better pray that whatever rookie they draft is at least ok. And not Cordell Volson ok. More like 65 pass block grade ok RE: Lucas Patrick - phil413 - 03-22-2025 (Yesterday, 12:55 PM)BoomerFan Wrote: Is there anything to the idea that has been kicked around before of having Matt Lee start at Center, Ted K moves to Guard, and then Lucas Patrick and Cordell Volson fight it out for the other Guard spot? Hopefully you end up with a better interior and some reasonably good depth that way. Well we do if Matt Lee is as good as we've heard and Ted is still good after moving. Someone mentioned that ad an option but I wouldn't plan for it. If Lee looks much better than the forthcoming rookie pick or anyone else you do need to consider it. Also have to consider Burrow and Karras' thoughts on it as well. RE: Lucas Patrick - phil413 - 03-22-2025 This may have been discussed, but Volson may have earned a raise that gets him cut. Last April we know that he was awarded this bonus from a program from the league: https://local12.com/sports/bengals/how-cincinnati-bengals-guard-cordell-volson-got-near-1-million-bonus-nfl-distribution-program-snaps-performance-draft-round-pro-football https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/77013/cordell-volson#:~:text=Cordell%20Volson%20signed%20a%204,dead%20cap%20value%20of%20%24164%2C221. So, without the bonus I think he could have stuck as a cheap backup. Now if he gets caught in a numbers game the raise looks like is isn't guaranteed so its all the more Cincy could be saving with other cuts to give Trey a bump this year or add a vet. It seems wrong to cut a guy with his earned bonus being part of it but he hasn't performed. If he never had it, his job on the roster may be safer though. He doesn’t have a first round grade on him, but his ability to play LT is a boon that can’t be ignored. If he can do this at the professional level, you’d be looking at a OBJr. replacement down the road in the not so distant future. I wouldn’t reach at 17 for him though. I’d trade back a bit, pick up an extra pick or two, and snatch him up late first round. Gives us that fifth year option to use too. I agree 100% We could give JOSH SIMMONS the Andrew Whitworth treatment.... That is who you were talking about right........ Sometimes every single one of the players on your team isn’t a super star. Key word "almost". We lost because: They sucked. The Ravens actually won a SB with Trent Dilfer that doesn't mean we should get rid of Burrow and just be happy with a Trent Dilfer level QB. So this should give us PTSD. We actually robbed ourselves of having our first Super Bowl by complete negligence walking into the season with holes and injuries just exposed that we had to start the worst OL in SB history. Adequate blocking on one play, let alone a handful of plays wins it. We know you can't put stats everywhere but Cappa was supposed to be part of the solution and he wasn't. I think I'd rather have a hole at another spot than have holes at BOTH guards. Patrick helps, Ford may be a 6th man but downplaying the need for improved OL play shouldn't bring us back to referencing the abomination of a position group that took a ring from us. We also just assume the tackles will carry us even with bad guard play and an aging center. Can you imagine one being hurt while Ford is already a guard? There is huge difference from drafting an OT projected to be out for injury the year he was drafted like Ced O. and a player like Simmons who may be ready by TC. He was likely a top 10 pick if healthy. He likely falls to last third of first round with the injury. I have no idea if he has ever played guard, but a lot of the OT's (and Jackson) have played guard and OT. One of my favorite players all time is Whittworth who played guard for us after being drafted in round 2. He did well and then when we needed a left tackle, he was ready for that as well. Whit was exactly who I was thinking about too. Trade back, draft Jackson, install him at LG (of course “to compete” but cmon, all he has to do is beat out Volson or Patrick). Then, when OBJr contract comes up, you have some insurance in case you want to move on due to injury or age or price. RE: Lucas Patrick - schroomytunes - 03-22-2025 I like the signing as it gives us a solid IOL to use in many ways, it fills an area of need at a low cost. I still see us drafting a OG/OT before rd 4 we need to get younger and new blood for the oline. As I see it now we will start: RT- Mims RG- Dylan Fairchild (Georgia), Miles Frazier (LSU) or similar rd 3 draft pick C- Karras LG- Patrick LT- OBJ backups- Ford, Volson, Lee, Kirkland, Cochran. I dont think they give up on Volson yet, as Patrick has the ability to play both Guard spots. I do think they may add a swing G/T type in FA on the cheap to push Cochran though. this can be done with the Moss cut. We lost because: They sucked. On a different angle but relevant, we rode the defense to SB in playoffs, and we missed last 2 yrs of playoffs more because of defense, subpar guard play is not the main issue to not getting and winning playoffs, but a subpar defense is, we need to focus on defense over our 2nd guard more. |
