I’m not sure how good of an evaluator he is, but Chris Simms had Stewart as his 2nd best edge in the draft.
Bengals needed a pass rush opposite Trey and now they are stacked at edge if he pans out.

I also like that he knows where he needs to improve and also wants to learn from Trey. Seems like a good kid so hopefully he can be a great player for the Bengals.
Burrow handled that well - don’t big time people and assume they know who you are even though they do. Also shook hands and introduced himself to everyone who was with Stewart. Small thing but it seems like a lot of young men these days don’t do that stuff and don’t know how to interact with people (blame the phones we are all putting in their hands when they are just toddlers).

I like this pick he does need to learn to keep an eye on guy with ball and get him to the ground better.
But there are so many things we don't need to teach him or have him improve at.
He is grown man strong to hold up against the run and to help rush the passer he doesn't need to add weight or hit the weight room just to get strong enough to play which is a long process with some players.
He has an array of pass rushing moves and knows how to use them again he does not need coached up on how to get to the quarterback just how to finish the play the easy part.
Great attitude and great energy seem to be a lot more vocal than some of our other linemen which is a good thing.
I don't think Hendrickson will be on our team beyond this year. Hubbard is retired so, this guy and some others on our Dine will have to step up and fill the voids this year and next year but we need to get stouter against the run in our division that's why I think he fits us and will work out.
The sacks will come give him a chance to play before we judge the guy.

One thing I read on Stewart that concerns me is that he's a super athlete with no football instincts.
Guys like that in sports usually never hit top potential.

I hope I'm wrong on Stewart. I can certainly see how some evaluators could have him as they're 2nd best prospect it wasn't a great 1st rd for DEs this year. Most of the value was on day 2 and beyond. Plus you had major character concerns with guys like Mike Green who would've been selected probably before the Bengals pick without those red flags.
This pick is signaling the end of Treys time in Cincinnati so I think don't think there will be any pairing with Trey outside of this year. Unless he does horrifically bad and that case does Trey even want to sign with a team that asked him to play out a contract he clearly want upgraded.
He tested well although he didn't do agility testing and he shows some good power on tape plus he has the size the Bengals covet. But has major concerns with his lack of production and not just sacks. He's in the bottom 3rd percentile in QB hits. He has the 2nd lowest run stop rate of a drafted DE in the last decade. He has the lowest TFL production of a drafted DE since 2000. While there are players who have similar low production scores that have gone on to be decent okay players is this his ceiling?
He has a lot of things to learn or work on and get better at so let's hope our coaches are up to the task because they have they're hands full.

Players picked in round 1, after we picked Stewart. Who would you have picked instead of Stewart? Just pointing out the reality of what the Bengals were dealing with.
I see the pick as the BPA pick AND it addresses a position of need.

IDK if I would have taken any listed over Stew but Barron. Harmon. Pearce, Campbell, or even Starks would not have made me mad.

I probably would have panicked and picked Donovan Jackson because I really wanted Booker and there were 4 OL off the board already.
But we ended up landing Fairchild and Rivers anyways and I feel great about it. Plus we now have Myles Garrett v2.0

I would not have minded Starks or Campbell (or even Emannwori) at 17.
I would rather have Stewart over Pearce and I did not want them to use another early pick on a CB. Time will tell if I was right or wrong.

I'm a huge fan of Stew's, but I was also a huge fan of Taylor Mays. I see similarities with their "hair on fire" play and elite athleticism. I just hope Stew coverts it better at the next level.

Yes I know how that goes - I was pumped when they got Maualuga in the 2nd round. He was solid but I thought we stole a Rey Lewis-type of LB…
Hoping Stewart can be a problem for opponents.

I was on both the Mayes and Rey M. train.
In my defense, I was also a member of the old board. I was a season ticket holder and extremely upset when we sucked so bad I coud not give away 4 tickets in the club section. Believe me, no one woud have descibed me as sunny.
As for now, I look at things a lot differntly as I have aged. I beleive in trying to enjoy the journey, all of it, so when they pick Stewart and I reay wanted Campbell, I try and take a positive outlook to enjoy the journey because me getting all wound up, kicking my Bernadoodle and crazy stops me from enjoying the journey. I finally leanred to quit being upset over things you can't control.
That is me and years ago, I was 100% different. I guess I mellowed, not totally as still a hot head at times, just takes more to get me heated these days.

Harmon and Ratledge and this draft would've been a A from me. Harmon is perhaps a little similar to Stewart having high missed tackles but being a good chaos creator. I just would've liked that coming from the DT position and not allowing QBs to step up. Plus the DE value was good late and looked as though it would be that way pre draft.

I did like Harmon and Jihad Campbell. But I would've taken just about any of the olineman. I especially liked Simmons because even with the risk of the knee he could play guard and was potentially the best tackle in the draft. Those guys aren't found at pick 17 very often and could of set us up for the next decade.

You see, I too did some research and what I found is Shamar was not playing at Texas A&M to sack quarterbacks. His job was to seal the edge on run plays and eat up running backs bouncing off tackle. These things he did very well.
We have to stop Lamar Jackson and Nick Chubb four times a year and players like Shamar can do it. The Bengals’ run defense hasn’t exactly been stellar and this pick will help stop the leaks.
So in other words, he was playing the same position with the same assignments as Sam Hubbard....
