RE: Draft rumors. - PDub80 - 04-22-2017

I don't see why the Bengals would go for a premium pick at LB. The way they use them is not traditional.

The Bengals play a lot of 5-2 and 4-2-5 Nickel.

Two LBs on the field at once doesn't leave any need for a high draft pick at the spot. plus, they don't use their LBs to create a lot of splash plays like a 3-4 team would where a lot of sacks are going to be generated.

Burfict, Minter, Vigil, Rey will be the LBs on the field I bet 90%+ of the time. Then throw in weird packages where maybe they have a pass rush specialist or something. There's just nothing for Foster to do in the Bengals defense based on personnel they have and how they use LBs. he wouldn't play for a loing time. He's not some unreal talent. he's a very very good LB, but nothing unique that the Bengals don't have. I don't see where he fits on the team.

They traded down and used those picks to build a roster to compliment their Quarterback and pick up quality players. Heck, their best picks are the ones they make much later on, considering they haven't done too well with early picks. I think the thing here is that they are lessening the risk by making more picks and grabbing talent to supplement what they have.

So, are you trying to say that what they are doing isn't working?  I laid it out, pretty plain and simple.  They are masters at evaluation of talent, and finding athletes that work well with what they are trying to do.  It's so much more than a "Brady thing", Belichick has assembled, or at least tuned the scouts at his disposal in as to exactly what he is looking for in a player.  Perhaps not just from a physical skill standpoint, but perhaps in personality cues as well.

I am saying they are given more credit then they should. They have a good system and the greatest QB ever seen. They make plenty of bad trades and bad picks but because they win people focus on the good. The trade backs don't show who they could have had that may have made them even better.

I'll be interesting to see if we get OJ in the first and Foster in the second.

More likely, OT in the first, 3rd-4th round projected pick (reach) in the second.

*Sarcasm alert*

Well, you're right.  It is much more than simply talent evaluation.  It's a motivation to produce a winner, that starts at the top and resonates throughout the organization.  When they have an athlete that starts grumbling about money, down the road..  When they put time and energy into a player that doesn't live up to what they thought he would, down the road..  When a player doesn't want to play his prescribed role to exact detail, down the road..

Sure, you can say that Brady is the greatest, but is he really?  I'm of the mindset that the Pats could take just about any starting quality QB, and have him perform like Brady in a matter of a couple years.

Folks hammer Mike Brown for being "budget minded", but they fail to realize that guys like Robert Kraft are budget minded, as well.  League has a salary cap...  Just no room for emotional attachments.

If Cook is there in the 2nd, I think we give him some serious thought.

They are pretty good at drafting on the Oline, but their starting WRs (Hogan, Amendola, Cooks), RBs (Lewis, Burkhead, Blount), DBs (Chung, Gilmore, Coleman), LBs(Ninkovich, McClellin, Van Noy) and DL( Ealy, Branch) are heavily imported from other teams. And, obviously, many of their high profile players from past teams, such as Welker, were imports as well.

They are built via free agency, trades and Tom Brady.

That's not a bad thing, but they're actually pretty mediocre in the draft.

They will take Mixon over Cook if they are both there.

Colin Cowherd actually made a pretty good point a few weeks ago about the Pats and personnel.  He said all these teams are still trying to model themselves after what they used to do as far as drafting but since the new CBA has limited practice time the Pats are trading those picks for proven vets ex. Brandon Cooks.  Pretty good point.  Bill is smarter than everyone

IT made me even sadder that we're collecting Comp picks like they're precious lombardi trophies

Well, yea. But Mixon is being mentioned in the first round now so I don't know if we're seeing him at 41.

Chung was their pick.  Hightower was theirs.  Others from the past.  What they do is trade guys when they have value. They cut them a year sooner than keep them a year too long.  Guys like Richard Seymour, Vince wilfork, chandler jones and Jamie Collins come to mind.  They are trading Malcolm Mitchell.  The bengals fo doesn't do that stuff.  They wait for third round compie.

Despite what Hobson has been saying, I think they take Ross or Thomas in round 1. Just a feeling.

There are rumors that we will select Ross. I hope this is s just a smokescreen. I would take Williams, Davis, JuJu and most of all Kupp before Ross. Heck I would rather wait till late 4th/5th round and grab Reynolds.

Even if he falls to the second it will be out of our reach still probably unless we traded up I believe.Even with his injury background he's still the fastest guy to ever suit up.Speed kills  everybody will be chomping at the bit for him in the second.

I've heard Marvin loves both Thomas and Ross.  I think they'd go Thomas if both players fell to them.  Also think they'd take Fournette over both if he fell to them, which he probably won't.

I don't have overly strong feelings about Ross either way.  His injury history scares me.  I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them go receiver, though.  They really seemed locked in on some guys in 1 last year and got burned by the run.  This year, they probably have the option of getting whichever they feel is the best in the draft.  I think that opportunity will be a tough one for them to pass up.

RE: Draft rumors. - bengals67 - 04-23-2017

You have to look at the impact a player would have on our team.

Ross or maybe Davis would really open things up for AJ

I hope we don't draft Howard and pick up Butt in third or fourth round. We could use a really good receiving TE and I think Butt is going to be an excellent pro.
