If I were Jim Haslam I would be all in Austin and Marvin's ears shouting to experiment a little, like bringing Brandon Wilson and Jordan Evans in on third and obvious passing situations at linebacker..I would be coaching hard to find somebody that can play that nickelbacker role..we've forced the most third downs thru 8 weeks our problem is not being able to match up in obvious passing situations..

Why would the Cleveland Browns owner be talking to our coaches?

Makes me wonder...if we blitzed more would the additional pressure lower the number of pass yards we give up? Or would it just make the short passes even more lethal because we'd have fewer people to miss tackles?

Currently we have the lowest blitz rate in the whole league, here's the top nine blitzing teams and percentages of the time they blitz..

Cards-38.1%
Browns-37.8%
Ravens-35.8%
Titans-30.4%
Jets-30.3%
Steelers-30.1%
Broncos-30.1%
Texans -27.8%
Vikings-27.8%

Teams with the lowest blitz rates..
Bengals-11.5%
Colts-13.1%
Eagles-16.3%
Chiefs-16.3%
Lions-16.8
Austin has to incorporate the blitz more than 11.5% of the time, it's to predictable of an approach,I wouldn't even waist time on preparing for blitz pressure when game planning the Bengals...

Should blitz more in certain situations no question. Also need to use more disguises where we fake blitz and have
our guy drop into coverage, say Hubbard then send a LB on the blitz. Hubbard can cover and rush the passer, use
Hubbard more, he is versatile.

really with the money invested in the line the rush should be able to get there more often with just 4.

But the DL is also the reason we see a lot of quick passes against us to neutralize one of our better assets.

Whats sad about this picture is if we aren't blitzing that much  our DB whisper of a DC must be whispering the wrong things.

Here are some blitz numbers for the Bengals defense the last 4 years under Guenther.  I don't have a "ranking" for total blitzes because PFO splits the blitz numbers into "rush 5" and "rush 6+".

Remember that if a 4-3 defense has to blitz a lot to get pressure then they are in trouble.  For a 4-3 to be successful they have to be able to get decent pressure with just the front four.

RUSH 5 rank
'15....31st
'16....32nd
'17....30th
'18....30th

RUSH 6+
'15....10th
'16....18th
'17....24th
'18....23rd

DB BLITZ
'15.... 6th
'16....14th
'17....24th
'18....23rd

TOTAL BLITZ % ("rush 5" plus "rush 6+")
'15....22.7%
'16....19.2%
'17....17.2%
'18....15.2%

Clearly the Bengals have been trending lower in their blitz percentage, but it also looks like the league overall is blitzing less.

Interesting we blitzed more the last time our Defense was pretty good. Good stuff Fred. Rock On
