I wonder about the percentage of kickoff returns that result in a holding call that moves the ball back to the 10. That's a possibility that also needs to be considered.

I think Shooter McPherson can put the ball just about anywhere he wants, and I do trust Simmons, who is as smart as all of us put together about all things special teams.

Regarding whether it's more blessed to give (kick) than receive if you win the toss, this would be my philosophy:

If we win the toss, receive and let Joe drive us down the field for the first score.

If we lose the toss and they defer, see above.

If we lose the toss and they take the ball, they are terrified of our offense. Stuff them, get the ball back, and see above.

If we lose the toss and they elect to kick, they have already given up.
