As others have said, hope this move helps combat the slow starts out of the gate.

Can't keep putting themselves in such a big hole to dig out of yearly.

I like it !

Playing Burrow in pre season is a ***** stupid idea why take the risk however small?

Playing the oline is a must but the communication between the line and Browning will be the same as if it was Joe.

If Burrow wants full speed reps take the shackles off Trey in practice on the condition that if he gets through and hits Burrow he doesn’t slam him to the ground.

If you play with feathers you could end up getting your bare tickled it just isn’t worth it.

I agree 100%!  Do not take risk with Joe. Let the D chase him in practice and the O go full speed n practice  That will work just fine.

Hasn't worked the last couple of years especially for the OL or the Defense. I guess I get it a bit with Joe, as he was hurt and that
was probably the biggest reason for his poor play early, but he can get hurt in practice just the same as Preseason. Burrow got hurt
in practice last year, not Preseason. The year before it was the appendectomy.

Everybody saying play Joe in the pre-season will be excoriating Zac for playing him in the pre-season if he gets injured in a meaningless game. Burrow has no business in there during the pre-season.

Completely disagree...ALL the starters need preseason game reps. You cannot replicate game speed in practice. Everyone in the NFL plays their starters including their prize QBs in the preseason.

Nope and like I said, Joe can get hurt in practice just the same as Preseason and he did last year. Maybe we ought to excoriate Zac for
playing him in practice where he got hurt lol

He can get hurt any time he steps on the field, but it is much more likely to happen in a pre-season game than it is in practice.

Is this really true? Players get hurt in practice all the time just the same as the Preseason.

As Memphis_Bengal said, game speed in Preseason is just different and not playing our starters in Preseason has clearly hurt our OL
and our Defense early in the regular season with these slow starts. Every other team plays their starters in at least 1 preseason game.

That is all we are asking so the starters can be on the same page and have some confidence going into the regular season.

If Andy Reid is any model of a coach, he likes to play Mahomes in preseason games (and Mahomes likes to play some in preseason). Reid's explanation is that it's needed to prepare for the real thing. If anything we've learned the last few years without OL and Burrow playing together in preseason, is that they are not prepared for when the real action starts.

And wouldn't it be more dangerous to throw Burrow into his first action in the first game of the season against fully prepared teams?

Yes

I think you just answered your own question.

So we all agree game speed is more intense and your answer to getting off to a good start is to deny our starting QB exposure to that until game 1?

I'm saying it's a double-edged sword and IMO Burrow has played enough football to be used to the speed of regular games, and the risk of losing him for the season in a meaningless pre-season game is not worth any perceived benefit he would get by playing 2 or 3 quarters. It's not like he's a rookie coming into the league who is not used to NFL speed.

Playing some of the preseason is a part of the process. You are smart in your protection. You tell him to protect himself. You are smart in your play selection. It’s an 18 game season. The first few games count. Based on the last few years starting slow hurt. I’m for it.

Let him play one drive, just call a screen pass/play action and call it a game.

And someone explain to me what exactly is the benefit of that? Is that really going to make any difference in his performance?
Look, they are going to do what they are going to do and none of us have any say in it. But if you are in the "Burrow needs to play pre-season" camp, just be prepared to live with it without complaining if he's lost for part of all the season due to an injury. I see no benefit when you look at risk/reward.

Where do we start from a risk reward? Burrow has played almost no preseason action, which is true. Let’s look at this.

Burrow career
52 games, 148 sacks, 37 picks, 57% win percentage. Averages 2.8 sacks per game, .71 picks per game.

Burrow first two weeks of season
8 games, 32 sacks, 9 picks, 12.5% win percentage. Averages of 4 sacks, 1.125 picks per game.

Burrow career, outside of first two weeks.
44 games, 116 sacks, 28 picks, 68% win percentage. Averages of 2.6 sacks per game and .64 picks.

Admittedly, burrow has faced adversity in various fashions to start each season, but the facts are the facts. Burrow is more likely to throw interceptions at a 75% higher rate, and take on 50% more sacks over the non first two weeks.

So, the risk of not playing our starters in some sort of meaningful reps is two fold. 1) a slow start (which matters) 2) more hits on burrow (which matters).

There is also the risk of injury in a preseason game. Trent green missed the season in 1999 (rams still won the Super Bowl), and Vick in 2003, broken leg missed first 11 weeks. But by and large that is an extremely small sample of injuries.

I know I only did the first two weeks, as that was time consuming enough, but this is about where the bengals start to dig themselves out of the hole.

In non first two week games, burrow is winning at a rate that is in elite category, top 12 all time. In the first two weeks, burrow is losing almost always.

Food for thought.

RE: Burrow cleared for contact, expect preseason action. - Nate (formerly eliminate08) - 08-02-2024

Everything is a risk and as Bengalbug shows we have tried to protect Burrow by not playing him in the Preseason.

Slow starts have been killing this team and have made it impossible for us to win the #1 seed. Need to start faster and I
believe that changing it up and getting our starters some Preseason snaps is a great way to change it up. I am glad Zac
and Burrow seem to feel the same.
