Didn’t we draft Ross a couple years ago, who couldn’t get on the field, because he didn’t know the offense. This is where I wonder if having a smaller scouting department compared to other NFL teams comes into play. Other organizations stay away from a Burton type, not because of character concerns as reported by the media, but possibly because their scouts identified a concern that he just cannot handle knowing an NFL playbook. The Bengals scouts didn't have the ability to make such a determination. I'm just speculating, of course. They took a shot to him down the left side against KC I believe but ball wasn't catchable. He did catch one later in the game though that is one of his two catches. Neither does Irwin. We keep these awful back end scrubs because Brown is too cheap to invest in to depth. He buys depth pieces in FA and has them as our starters. Bell, Stone, Hill, borderline Rankins are all rotational pieces. Not starter level NFL players. Charlie Jones is one of only 3 players in the NFL with a KR TD so far. Jones has a YPR for KRs at 40.0, the best in the league with players who have 5+ KRs. Jones is only 15th in PR average though at 7.1. Return Specialist is about all he's been good for in his 1.5 seasons. "Complete bum" though is a little overboard though. He does have value on ST. Halloween going on around this place. BTW, I could be wrong but it seems we lose a lot and badly around and on Halloween. I've noticed the Bengals go for high-ceiling guys but maybe who need more refinement to get there. Zach Carter, Jermaine Burton, Andrei Iosivas, Joseph Ossai just to name a few. Each of these guys had some amazing, albeit inconsistent tape in college. It might ultimately come down to the coaches thinking they could refine these guys when in reality they haven't really gotten too much out of them (at least yet). Either these dudes haven't shown ability to improve in their areas of weakness enough and/or the coaching effort or techniques just haven't been resonating well. They intended for him to take the boyd role, or at least be a 600 yard guy He doesn’t even see the field. Big whiff by duke and co. Then again, you’re putting a lot on a 4th rounder by asking him to fill Boyd’s shoes RE: Jermaine Burton still doesn’t know the freaking plays - ochocincos - 10-28-2024 (10-28-2024, 02:22 PM)Frank Booth Wrote: They intended for him to take the boyd role, or at least be a 600 yard guy I agree with this sentiment to an extent, but is it that the coaches intended for him to take Boyd's role or did we fans just make that assumption? If the intent for Jones was to always be return specialist, that's too high of a draft pick for such a role (IMO). Yeah...and we seem to draft A LOT of guys that are either local to Ohio, from Cincy, or from a big program that's on TV all the time. To me, that screams we don't have the scouting to scour for diamonds. Some of it is drafting combine numbers over production. But, then in another thread it was noted that we draft very unathletic lineman. So, I don't know. Idc if Iosivas knows the playbook like the back of his hand when this is what he’s done with his opportunities. Dakota St. Gunter-Coastal Carolina Sample-Tulane Dante Smith-East Carolina Wilson -Wyoming ADG-Appalachian St. I mean, most teams are gonna primarily draft guys from power conferences because they have the best players. I only watched part of one game in the preseason, which is probably why I don't remember the specifics. As I had mentioned, I only had one game televised, and I don't believe I watched the entire game. RE: Jermaine Burton still doesn’t know the freaking plays - bfine32 - 10-28-2024 I'm also sure JB gave him the stink-eye during the film session when he cost us 5 free yards by running on and off the field. I fear his route tree will always be limited, but if he's good at them, then that's a plus. Just let Burton run around back yard style until he's open at this point. It's still gonna be better than Yoshi/Irwin/Jones. Antonio Brown burned us to a crisp doing exactly that as a Steeler. |
