Tackling and effort is important since he likes to play man and rely on the secondary to cover the receivers, His aggressive style is what gets me excited because I think Burrow, and the offense, will feed off of the energy of the defense. The DC has to be able to identify the specific qualities that he's looking for in a player, in order for the management to make the appropriate selection. Kind of reminds me of the draft thread I just started and kind of proves that, while a huge scouting department might bot be necessary anymore, teams definitely need a decent size one to identify players with the qualities and style of play that a coach wants. One thing stood out to me. He said with injuries al had to play the Redshirt sophomore, and 1st year freshman...and he expected them to perform and they did. He added that Al believes that ANY player on an NFL team roster should be ready to play at any time. So hopefully no more waiting to play someone until he plays like a veteran and then complaining that he never develops. those are positive vibes RE: The OFFICIAL Welcome Al Golden Thread - rfaulk34 - 01-24-2025 I'll get excited when i see the Bengals with the 16th or better defense these next few years. So we can move all our speculation about his coaching to a new thead!!! Sunset said I could start a new welcome thread. Holy Crap. I wish I had seen this coming. Who would have guessed ? I mean I know I posted a day ago that CBS and ESPN said this was a done deal and it got moved. But of course, Sunset allows a thread that it's official. I guess CBS ad ESPN wasn't official enough. Who would have guessed ? Golden as the DC for Bengals. What earth shaking news. Thank you for this post, See, this is why you guys are top rated posters. You saw Golden as DC when nobody else did. Shades of Nostradamus. But in the end, WELCOME GOLDEN. I hope he can fix this lousy defense, Get Burrow and Company back in Play-Offs and a run at Super Bowl. Some upsides to Golden. He played and later coached under Joe Paterno, who was a Defensive Guru. Golden being hired as Head Coach of Miami Hurricanes is impressive. Golden has coached under Zac Taylor before in the Super Bowl year. Golden being hired as D Coordinator by Notre Dame is impressive. I was pretty happy until I heard that clip about supporting your QB...."We've got to get him the ball" I hope someone can tell me this is not the case, but when Golden came here as a linebackers coach, is that about the same time Pratt and the others just started trying to rip the ball out on every play instead of securing the tackle? Was actually after he left: Pratt started doing that in '22, Golden was in ND at that point. Well that's good. I thought for a minute maybe that came from him. Nevermind, I'm happy again... RE: The OFFICIAL Welcome Al Golden Thread - Stewy - 01-24-2025 I've seen a few break downs of his schemes in action. He LOVES to use LBs to delay blitz, cross over and over load the blind side of the QB. He uses the DL to create the shits and openings. Also, the reviews I've seen show clearly that his players are reacting to motion to make sure everyone is covered/accounted for. It is certainly a reactive/action defense, but also disciplined where everyone knows their job. I think in the NFL the latter is more important than the former. Right We don't have to be an All-World defense. Just average RE: The OFFICIAL Welcome Al Golden Thread - Joelist - 01-24-2025 If he can fix the tackling and the "everyone knows their job" problems the defense will skyrocket. I was watching a NFL Replay of a game from '21 a while back and during the broadcast, they mentioned that the Bengals were one of the best tackling teams of that year. Something like #1 or #2 least in missed tackles. RE: The OFFICIAL Welcome Al Golden Thread - Bilbo Saggins - 01-24-2025 His head coaching record is exactly .500 He's a previous employee, buddy buddy with people, knows how to go along to get along. This is a very Bengals hire. I think that they missed out on some better options for DC honestly. Golden seems high floor low ceiling. Maybe that was the idea.
