Honestly id rather pick up a legit DT and corner in FA, then they could draft BPA and hopefully land a legit guard at some point that can play on a rookie contract for 4-5 years. They have DJ as the 17th-ranked player in the draft: https://www.nfl.com/combine/tracker/participants/ What are the"anywhere's" you look? I'm sure NFLDRAFTBUZZ and bleacherroport are great publications. But I roll more with folks like Daniel Jerimiah. Cynthia Freeland, Mel Kiper, and Bucky Brooks. Not to mention the kid was a 5-star recruit coming out of HS who was 2-time All Big-Ten at LG his Sophomore and Junior years. Most likely would have been All-American if he would have stayed inside this year. Guards are not sexy, but a good one is worth a lot. There was nothing "special" about Kevin Zeitler, but you tell me I can have him again at #17. I'm taking it. Hell. I'd take Clint Boling without the early retirement RE: Guard in the first round? - Bengalstripes9 - 02-26-2025 (02-26-2025, 02:25 AM)bfine32 Wrote: I'm sure NFLDRAFTBUZZ and bleacherroport are great publications. If you look at the rankings of players on nfl.com we are looking at a guard/tackle, a corner rising up boards, a DT, an edge that falls, or a TE that falls, etc. They all have a very similar grade of around 6.4, with the tight ends having the highest grades. Most mocks I see have Seattle taking a guard immediately after us because their line sucks and the grade of the player is in line with that spot. But yea, none of this makes any sense and I must be crazy for suggesting the possibility. My biggest want in free agency is now a DT. There’s a lot of them available and if they can replicate the success they had after picking up Reader they can get the D back on track. DT is vital to the defensive scheme, as evidenced by the results the last 4-5 years. RE: Guard in the first round? - bfine32 - 02-26-2025 (02-26-2025, 02:32 AM)Bengalstripes9 Wrote: Foolish I say! You gimme the following at 17 and I'm OK: Booker Jackson Membou RE: Guard in the first round? - Speedy Thomas - 02-27-2025 Guy from Alabama is a beast. Put him next to Mims and get out of the way. RE: Guard in the first round? - Whatever - 02-27-2025 I don't personally see a G in this class worth taking in the 1st round. Low positional value for G's, no truly elite G prospects imo, and OL in the 1st last year make me think it won't happen. Not to mention Duke's comments about the G group at the Combine don't really make it seem like they are willing to invest that kind of draft capital. RE: Guard in the first round? - ochocincos - 02-28-2025 I might be in the minority, but I like a handful of guard prospects in FA and feel like that's where they should get new ones. Trey Smith will be the expensive, elite one, but I also like James Daniels and Dalton Risner as less expensive options. On top of that, Guard is usually cheaper to pay in FA compared to other positions. I'd rather the draft go toward DL, pass catcher, or DB in Rd 1. Never upset with going trenches in the first round, but haven't heard many Guards mentioned that would be available that would be BPA there unless we trade down. DT is where I am leaning along with TE if Kenneth Grant isn't there and Warren is. Hopefully we get at least 1 Guard in FA and I would prefer 2 starting Guards to free up the Draft. They already have older vets at guard and that’s what you’re looking at in FA. They need a young guard or two in my opinion. I also think management attributes the guard play to playing through injuries. But I do think they’ll address it. I think the biggest needs are on defense and I’d love to see DT addressed this year in FA much like the Reader deal. It’s such an important position as evidenced by the defensive performance the last 4 years or so. I’m not convinced one of the top DTs falls to them but it could. I’m expecting a FA DT and a 1st round edge player to address the front 7. I’m expecting another bargain CB with upside. I’m expecting a bargain FA running back like Perine too. They probably go guard in the 2nd or 3rd round. We’ll see. Definitely an important offseason and will be fun to track! I am not sure the sources you are using, but the ones I use now have him in the top 40, so early 2nd round grade. I will be shocked if he is available when we pick at 49. He has shown he can play LT and guard. I use: Pro football network mocks NFL Draft Data Base NFL Draft Buzz I used to use ESPN and CBS but have found them not as a reliable. I would prefer a trade back to 23 to 28, I think at least 1 of the 3 will be available with that pick. I like the idea of fixing OG in free agency. I like Becton, Fries and Daniels. I would love 2 of the 3. Then cut Cappa. We will see if they cut Cappa soon, if they do, I think we will grab at least 1 Guard in FA, maybe 2. Guard was the most obvious weakness on the Offense last season without a doubt. On Defense, it was DL and thankfully this is a very deep DL class. Who is your Edge player in the first round? I think DT is the most likely and it being Kenneth Grant. Guard in the 2nd round seems more likely than in the first, would love Donavan Jackson, but expect him to go before 49. Wanting Skattebo the RB out of Arizona State in the mid rounds, think he fits just what we need. Guard was the most obvious I’m not sure who but it seems like they are very interested in edge like they were OT last year. I think it’s likely the pick this year. Could be Grant too but I think DT is the most important piece on defense and if you look at nfl.com’s list of top free agents there are a ton of DTs on that list. If it were me I’d sign their top option for DT in FA and solidify the interior before the draft. I think Grant could very well be there when they pick and they are looking at him or a few edge players, and I’m still not ruling out guard either because of the grades of picks 14-40 or so being very similar. I don’t think the top 2 DTs are there when they pick so edge seems most likely. RE: Guard in the first round? - CJD - 03-01-2025 I have mixed feelings about guard in the first round. We definitely need a guard and getting a premier talent in the first round feels like a great way to secure the Oline. The problem I have is that we have needs at Edge, DT, and IOL (among others like safety, TE, RB, LB and, depending on what we do with Higgins, WR). And, statistically speaking, it is much easier to fill guard in free agency than it is DT or edge. Of the top 15 paid players at each position, 10 right guards and 10 left guards were signed via free agency (with 8 others drafted by the team that paid them, and 2 traded for). Similar case for centers. But for DTs, 12 of the 15 highest paid DTs were paid by the team that drafted them. For edge, it's 9 of the 15.
So, ideally, I want to use our first round pick on a position that we can't easily sign a star in free agency. We can sign guards in free agency since they're comparably less expensive. I like him and would be happy with him as a pick, but he isn't 20 when the season starts, thus that's moot. RE: Guard in the first round? - Jpoore - 03-01-2025 You know how I feel about Donovan Jackson. A guard who can play LT in a pinch? Yes please. Imagine the offense tbh is year if we had Donovan Jackson there instead of our backup LT. but that being said I feel confident you can get him in a trade down. Rd 2 looks like the meat of this draft. |
