You either thought it was funny or you didn't. Not really worth my time to explain it in great detail. I didn't think it would be such an issue for some people. For all I know The Unicorn might be the greatest wideout to ever play in the NFL.

Obviously it wasn't an April Fools joke because I wasn't trying to fool anybody.

Difference between a guy who played in a college level with other NFL caliber players than someone who's playing against other players that aren't going to be in the NFL.

But that's okay.  Keep reaching for similarities when there's bigger differences.

I'm not sold on this guy just on the basis or workouts. Seen too many "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" types come along. We'll see.

This is exactly the type of guy who comes to camp ever year and the message boards go wild... "so and so from Outer BFE State is a BEAST, he is unstoppable. Sure, he hasn't played much and doesn't really know the game, but this guy is making the 53 for sure and will definitely be first team All Pro by his second year". Then when he inevitably gets cut it is follow up with "he was just a training camp body, good riddance, glad to see him go". The only problem is when these guys get taken early, because as has already been mentioned, you would hope a second round pick could see the field and contribute at some point...

Does anyone actually remember on of these "project players" actually working out for the Bengals? Serious question, because I can't.

So what started as joke to some here, may be reality (or maybe should). Apparently many teams came away very impressed with his pro day. They even asked him to try some TE blocking he'd never done, but he figured it out quickly. The guy could be a middle rounder to some.

Honestly someone that big who can run that fast, I'd give it a go and see if he can be a deep ball specialist.

Also I simply don't think I could ever want to take a 26-year-old in the 2nd round regardless of everything else.

Even if they work out, their contract is 4 years and then when they become a FA when the next season they'll be 30. Will they decline? How many years do you give them? Are you willing to gamble they won't decline as fast as normal? Also, how much money will they want? If they're getting their 30-year-old contract, it's probably their last chance at a good payday.

It's more or less the same reason I laughed at the Browns taking Brandon Weeden in the 1st round. Even if he was good, how long could he realistically be good for? QB's age better than every position that's not a K or P, but still. He's only played 4 years in the NFL and he's already heading into his age 33 season.


Case and point.. Carlos Dunlap was a 2nd round pick. He's played 6 years in the NFL, TWICE as long as Hunt. Dunlap is still only heading into his age 27 season. Hunt is heading into his age 29 season.

Stacy Andrews was a track athlete who only played a handful of snaps in college.

Ethan Kilmer was another track star drafted based on hi athletic ability.  He flashed some good plays but ended up with injury issues.

How many players do you consider "projects" that we have taken?  I really can't think of many at all.

It is like telling a joke about how stupid a certain race of people are.  The only way it seems funny is if you also think that race of people are stupid.

Since some of us see nothing stupid in doing what every other team in the league does we don't see any humor in it.

Well, to be fair.  The NFL did try a league in Europe, remember that?  And while most European players can't hang with bonafide NFL talent, I feel like the joke is fair.  I sensed no derogatory undertones toward European folk, as a people.  Why did you?

I actually found a youtube highlight reel a few days ago and sent to a friend from work and said I wouldn't mind him being our next project, like Simpson and Hunt and many others. He fits our bill. He's a freakish athlete if his play translates he'll be pretty good
