The kid from Coastal Carolina (Jeffrey Gunter) will be this year's Hodge...probably kill some poor third stringers in the preseason, and one guy I believe we are sleeping on is Khalid Kareem.
Kareem didn't get to perform at the combine or a pro day, and it caused him to fall to the Bengals in the 5th round. He was projected as a mid-round pick, and I read an article at the time that SF was very high on him.
He had a torn labrum his 9th game of his final year at ND, and played through it. He said he didn't realize it was torn, as he thought it was just sore. Tough guy to play through that. He had the surgery and ended up a Bengal.
He had a really nice game against Denver (helped win it, basically) and had a PFF score of 94 that game, but left with a concussion. Two weeks later, in the game he got the most snaps of his career, against the Browns (with a lot of backups around him) he scored an 84 on PFF.
I think he is big enough to rotate inside on some pass rush snaps, and the Bengals could use that flexibility.
Hoping he and Ossai are both healthy and major contributors this season. The entire defense gets better if Hendrickson and Hubbard aren't out there every snap.

Ossai will be the Bengals "secret" weapon. Teams probably forgot that he was drafted by the Bengals.
He and Hendrickson will be terror for other teams, and even when opposing teams have an extra second or two, Bengals secondary will be a nightmare for QBs.

For comparison Hubbard is making 10m/year
He had 9 sacks with probably the best DE in the league playing on the other side (Garrett). I am just not a fan of his. And Hubbard is very dependable both in terms of health and run defense as well.

The versatility that both Ossai and Dax Hill bring sure could be used to confuse QB's big time.

Clowney reminds me of Dunlap so much. Both long, talented disruptive Ends with motivation problems at times.
Doubt Clowney fits here the same as Dunlap no longer did in Lou's Defense.

Pressure up the middle by our rookie Carter would be a great help as well.

Interior sacks would be great, but just a constant great push up the middle can be devastating, especially if our ends are doing a good job crashing from the edge.

Reader and Hill?
Hill will get a handful of sacks (probably 5-7), but here are Reader's sacks over the years:
2016 (16 games, 7 starts) - 1.0 sack
2017 (14 game, 14 starts) - 1.0 sack
2018 (16 games, 16 starts) - 2.0 sacks
2019 (15 games, 15 starts) - 2.5 sacks
2020 (5 games, 5 starts) - 0.0 sacks
2021 (15 games, 15 starts) - 2.0 sacks
Reader is not a sack guy. He's a pure NT who can help push the pocket and is a master at stuffing the run, but he ain't some 5+ sack IDL kinda guy.
That's going to come from Hill and maybe rookie Carter and/or a DE who swings inside (Hubbard/Sample).

In 2020 our DTs were invisible. Not even Lawson or Hubbard could get any sacks when the opposing QB could just step up into the pocket.

I think we could keep 11 on the DL. I could also see cutting Shelvin if he does not progress this year and keep a vet on the PS for the 5th DT (Daniels).
Starters: Hendrickson, Reader, Hill, Hubbard.
Reserve locks: Ossai, Carter, Tupou
Inside Track: Kareem, C. Sample, Shelvin.
In with a shot: Hubert, Gunter, Spence, Tisdale.

I'd say Sample is a lock.
Shelvin didn't show anything last year but with Reader and Tupou in front of him he really did not have a chance. Hate to cut a draft pick after just one season but it could happen.
Kareem saw his playing time drop dramatically form 259 defensive snaps in 2020 to just 110 last year. We have given him 2 years and he has not shown anything. He might be more on the bubble just because he is a 3rd year player, but there is not really anyone better behind him.

I give him 7-8 only because Trey and Sam will beat him to so many sacks
