Still a great offense, but ultimately my point was that pretending the only way that improving the defense is a better idea is if it makes it a top-5 defense is just silly. An 8th scoring offense and 14th scoring defense is better than a 6th scoring offense and 25th scoring defense.
Completely agree. Last years team lost the close ones which previously they won. The defense was clearly worse. But they’ve missed on players. Whether it be Free Agents at safety or the TE from Minnesota, Rankins, or Hill & Murphy or Burton. Their hit rate poor. With the high salaries now they’d better clean it up

Point differential is the better stat. The top 4 offensive scoring teams since 2020 few have made the SB. KC only a couple of times.

I think the real question is what we would have done if some of the recent draft picks actually panned out. What if Dax was looking like Bates 2.0 and ready to cash in? What if Murphy was a terror off the edge and getting ready to demand a 25 mil payday? What if CTB continued to trend in a good direction in 24? That would have made paying 2 receivers crazy money a lot harder to justify.
Unluckily for us, those guys haven't done squat in a combined 5 seasons. Makes keeping your 3rd or 4th best player a whole lot easier to digest regardless of position.
This is everything. This is the main reason we’re able and willing to sign tee. It’s because no one else deserves big contracts. If our defense was good because of those players, they would let tee walk and draft his replacement, because we wouldn’t need to draft defense.

For better or worse, Lou ran a complex defense that wasn't friendly to young players. When we had the back to back AFC title game runs, it worked because the defense was largely compromised of vet FA's and a couple of holdovers from the Marvin era. As we lost veterans and had to replace them with draft picks because we needed to pay the stars on offense, it sputtered. Late last year, when he finally simplified things and there was more of a youth movement in terms of snaps, they played better. Honestly, if he had made the switch at the bye instead of waiting, there's a good chance we could have gotten that one more W to put us in the playoffs.

I know people won't like that take, but I really think they didn't sign Bates because they knew they had to pay Tee...then they weren't going to sign Tee because they knew they had to pay Joe/Chase to ridiculously expensive contracts.

defense is not the only problem the Bengals need to address or will need to address.I am happy for the people that are enamored with Higgins but you simply do not pay a number 2 receiver , often injured close to 30 million bucks a year..Another Bengals front office blunder

OH please..we had beau coup injuries on defense last year..And by the end of these season the "rookies" were playing better ..not because of simplification ..but because they were getting better acclimated

Actually it was because they were playing the likes of Cooper Rush, Mason Rudolph, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, but go off.

If the defense wasn’t playing better, how do you explain the 24 point swing between the two Steelers games?
The ravens put up 35 and 41, both early to mid season.
The browns put up 14 and then 6, from early season to end of season.
The Steelers went 44 and 17, mid season to end of season.
The difference between first and second games for browns and Steelers was around a 60% deduction in points allowed.

I've been beating the Bates drum since I had to watch him ball out all season (NFC South viewing area). Ts, I just think that they undervalued him and though that they could easily replace him. Add in that he played his college ball at Wake and the move back to the SE was an easy one for him.
Tee's contract situation may have been in the back of some minds when Bates contract should have been in the front!
Rams D was supposed to suck after Donald retired; it didn't. They got better through the draft and are now set for another run.

It's the same reason some of us do mock drafts, FA targets, etc.
We think we have an idea of what players could be good to upgrade the team.
The worry is justified after seeing the defense that was fielded last year.
The defense was 25th in both yards and points allowed.
Offense was 6th in yards and points for.
The only actual outside addition to the defense so far has been Slaton, who has the following amount of pressures by year:
2024 (208 pass rush snaps) - 13
2023 (277 pass rush snaps) - 14
2022 (134 pass rush snaps) - 5
2021 (141 pass rush snaps) - 6
That's Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson level:
Jenkins (260 pass rush snaps) - 11
Jackson (133 pass rush snaps) - 7
So Slaton does not improve the pass rush at all, just the run defense.
I'm sure that will help some, but I personally don't think that swings the defense to Top 15.
Bengals were tied for 24th in team sacks last year.
We have to hope Bengals add 1, if not 2, DL who can rush the passer. One of them needs to be a DT.
Some people are rightfully worried that, like last year, the Bengals could end up losing a handful of games despite scoring 30+ points in them because the defense is just that bad.

The Steelers had a really bad offense that typically put up lower points. The 44 was the anomaly.
17 was tied for the most points they scored over their last 7 games.
The Steelers last games they scored:

And I expect us to Draft more Defense in this next Draft as well for Golden. As long as we make the right picks and Golden and the rest of the
Defensive staff can develop them he is not in a terrible spot. We need to address Guard on Offense and maybe TE and RB but that is about it
and we should still bring in at least one Guard soon enough.

Out of any draft, getting 2 starters is a pretty good draft. So we could use many picks on guys, but most will be special teamers, etc.

There are some instant starters that fit our needs to be had around 17 this year though. Jihad Campbell, Jalon Walker, Walter Nolen, Kenneth Grant,
Emmanwori...
These are some awesome players that I believe all would be instant starters and not just ST'ers as rookies. Not to mention a Guard, TE or RB in the
2nd to mid rounds where there aren't much in front of them. At Guard we have nobody, at TE we have Gesicki but he is more of a big WR, at RB we
have Chase Brown but Perine is getting up there in age and this is a deep Draft with tons of talent at RB.
