Zac wanted Bengals D to have 5 to 6 DB's on the field 80 % of the game, and Lou did. However Golden who had one of the top coaching jobs in football at Notre Dame is not coming to Cincinnati to play that Zac and Lou defense. Golden has already said he will have 3 and 4 LB's on the field more. So instead of this Zac and Lou 5 to 6 DB's on the field 80 % of the game, Golden is going to have more 3 and 4 LB packages. Sometimes Golden will have the extra DB's on the field, but not 80 % of the game. Look for Golden to go back to more LB's in more of the game. Golden said he would. I think this was agreed on when Golden left the top coaching job at Notre Dame to come to Cincy, that he could run his defense, not the Zac and Lou all DB's all the time defense. Goldens’s family lives down the street from Zac and Sara. Never moved to South Bend. Zac was on the same page with his DC as he will be with his new DC. But Zac doesn’t do defense he leaves that up to them. Don’t get me wrong sure he’s the head coach but it was Lou’s defense as it will be Golden’s defense. The personnel and development was the big issue. Ossai really fits Al Golden's Defense. We sure won't be using all stack Backers in the 4 LB looks as Synric says. Have to have LB's that are good at multiple things and add different things to certain packages. Also, Stewart has the athleticism to drop back into coverage at times. I know Sam used to do this for us, but he was clearly slowing down the last 3 years or so and had the injury problems on top of it. I didn't like the Ends dropping into coverage because it didn't work, but with a heat seeking missile like Knight in there he could blitz while SS drops back and it could be scary for Offenses to deal with. RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - Gdale_Bengal - 05-02-2025 The first 3 picks going Harmon Ratledge Fairchild Would have SIGNIFICANTLY helped this team. RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - SouthernFan - 05-02-2025 This is an impossible and pointless exercise. As soon a pick is changed, potentially every subsequent pick is impacted as a different pool of players would be available to each team. So outcomes are unknowable. Of course, Bengals didn't have enough Front 7, so in the Draft they added more Front 7. Golden says sometimes 4 LB's. This is going to be a whole new defense, and as bad as Bengals were on defense, I welcome the change. With Burrow, Chase and Higgins locked in, let's get back to The Super Bowl. The 4 LBs will almost certainly mean a 3 DT front with 4 DBs. He is trading a DL for a LB. But it certainly won't be 5 DBs with 4 LBs. Nor 5 DBs With 3 LBS. if we are legit gonna play 4 LBs, and Golden is not counting a DE amongst them (Ossai, Trey), then keeping Pratt is a real option. And we probably keep 6 LBs. 5 at least. Wilson, Knight, Burks, and Carrer are locks. Pratt is miles better than Heyward or Njongmeta. If we are not gonna use his cap savings on a FA (G, S, DT, CB, WR3, 2 way TE), and it sure looks like we are not gonna, then what is the point of cutting him? Rollover for 2026? RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - Luvnit2 - 05-02-2025 Stewart - Best true DE in the draft Knight - 3rd best LB in the draft and other 2 taken Fairchild - I like him better than Rutledge and I got him a round later Carter - 4th best LB in the draft, a steal in round 4 Rivers - He will becoe a starter in next 3 years if he stays healthy Brooks - I had a 4th round grade and felt we needed a young back for the future It is also the only draft I will be able to honestly evalauate how these guys fit in our system and fit in Al's scheme which my hunch is going to be different from Lou's scheme. But how did this help the defense? Harmon is DT #5 coming in on the depth chart. Harmon is already better than the majority of our DTs right now. He’s huge and long and will eat OL freeing up linebackers and give Hendrickson 1 on 1s. Out run defense will improve, and if he can, pressure up the middle with Hill will help DBs make plays from forcing the QB out of the pocket and uncomfortable. I dunno. I was really high on the guy. I hate that he is a steeler. RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - ochocincos - 05-05-2025 (05-02-2025, 03:14 PM)Synric Wrote: I doubt the Bengals use 4 stack linebackers in 34 fronts. I think people are misunderstanding sounds like they want to use Barrett Carter as a special teams guy and rotate him into the defense. Oren Burks may only rotate in with Knight in coverage situations and they Wilson, Knight, Carter in Base 43 fronts. I doubt they would as well. Marvin would use 4 LBs back in the day but rotate out the SAM for someone better in coverage on 3rd down. If Bengals predominantly moved to a 3-4, I'd guess it'd be Slaton at NT, Hill and...Jenkins? at DE, and Hendrickson and Ossai at OLB rushing the passer. And then ILBs would be Wilson and probably Burks. I am just curious how they end up using everyone because they invested in two LBs in the first four rounds. That's a lot of draft capital to put toward a position, especially when they had so many other needs. They obviously won't keep Pratt beyond this year, but still they got Wilson, Burks, and now Knight for 2026. Did they really need to get Carter? Rd 4 feels early for a depth guy. Maybe the long-term plan is for Carter to develop enough to take over for Burks as LB3 in 2027. But still, shouldn't teams be drafting based on a plan for how the player will be used during their rookie contract? Wilson is signed through 2027, which would be the first 3 years of Carter's 4-year rookie contract. 2027 would be the only real year with a decent chunk of cap savings if cut - $5.2 mill. Wilson would be 31 though by 2027, so maybe it happens. Still, my goal would be to try to put together the strongest roster for 2025-2026, not necessarily worrying about guys who may take over 3-4 years from now. For once in this damn team's life, they need to do more to try to win now. It will happen at some point, right? How many rookie 4th round picks beginning at pick 119 available will start in 2025? I think you are being very short sighted. If they had a 2nd round grade on Carter, again do you think they had 4th or 5th round grades would help us in 2025? If he comes in as a rookie and contributes immediately on special teams does that count in your mind? If not him, then who else will cover the special team duties in 2025? To me, spending his rookie year on ST's, the next two as the 3rd LB/sub package player/primary backup, then assuming a starting role in Year 4 is a perfectly reasonable career plan for a 4th round pick. And that can be accelerated if Carter earns more PT and/or Wilson or Pratt gets cut/traded. Looking at the '21 draft, as it's a full rookie contract cycle, only 12 of 38 players drafted in the 4th recorded at least one year as a primary starter per PFR. 12 of those players were also out of the league entirely by 2024. To break it down even further, only 9 players were multi year primary starters(which seems to be your expectations), and only 1 made a Pro Bowl. Conversely, 13 of the players that were still in the league last year were playing for a team other than the one that drafted them at some point during those four years. So the odds are as follows for a 4th rounder based on the '21 class... Pro Bowler 2.6% Multi year starter 21.1% Eventual Starter 31.6% Cut before the end of rookie deal 65.8% Out of the league entirely within 4 years 31.6% RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - Synric - 05-06-2025 (05-05-2025, 10:10 AM)ochocincos Wrote: I doubt they would as well. Marvin used to rotate out both outside linebackers when he had Brandon Johnson. I can definitely see Barrett Carter in the Brandon Johnson Nickle/Dime package Linebacker role. When it comes to 34 looks, which we will still see this year, that's where Shemar Stewart's versatility come into play as a guy that can play 34 End, 43 End, and 34 OLB. A team hits on a pro bowler 2.6% of the time and that is the guy our fans prop up. Yes, it happens, but not often. Also, Volson will be on the multi yesar starter list in 2022. My point being assuming all on the multi year starter list are good NFL starters is also not true. He was a 4th round pick also. RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - CottonHill - 05-07-2025 I wanted Nolen, if you have intel he was going the pick before then you try to trade up for cheap...that takes the FO being proactive so that was out. So, stayong put, Jihad Campbell Tate Ratledge With these two you have two, bonafide, above average starters for the next 5 years. Not sexy but certain. I flirted with going Pearce or Campbell and Mike Green. But you have some questions about character and if either are more than just pass rushers. Unfortunately, we went Stewart who may not be able to rush the passer or stop the run,....and D Knight who only broke out after he was 2 years older than the average college starter. Then, we wouldn't have to reach for Fairchild and we have already filled two starting holes at lb and g, so we can go BPA Xavier Watts I was good with the Carter pick Mbow over Rivers but ok with Rivers Ok with Brooks but i would have taken a flyer on Ewers so Campbell Ratledge Watts Carter Mbow Ewers RE: What Would Your Draft Have Been? - Soonerpeace - 05-07-2025 (05-07-2025, 11:30 AM)CottonHill Wrote: I wanted Nolen, if you have intel he was going the pick before then you try to trade up for cheap...that takes the FO being proactive so that was out. At least according to PFF's year end OL rankings. So drafting two starting G's wouldn't be a very sound strategy. Interesting points Whatever. Looking in the rearview mirror I'm hoping the Bengals made all the right choices. We will still have significant holes, but only Philadelphia doesn't. I love the way Scott Peters raved about Fairchild. Very reminiscent of how Forest Gregg described his experience with Anthony Munoz. It's just Phase 2. I allow myself to dream till training camp... |
