Yeah, Higbee has become a big part of this offense, need him back soon..... Ninja

playing Sample looks way slower. Wilcox has been a blocker and not featured as a pass catching TE at all so this might be
the first time we see him used this way. We will see.

I think so too, there is a reason we didn't bring in a player like Ebron off the street.

Hilarious

Good news, at least he will be back before the Playoffs where he can be clutch for us.
It's not as big of a discrepancy as you may think.
Offensive snaps - 406
Blocking snaps - 248 (61%)
So yes he's been used more as a blocker, but it isn't like he isn't going out for routes at all.

Cool, thanks. Also with all our weapons, I am sure he is the last guy that Burrow looks for.

We will see how he does with a more prominent role.

He's been improving in both areas I think.   He had some nice blocks on Sunday - a really nice one on Dunlap.  And he appears to be becoming a more reliable receiver.

Dane Brugler is The Athletic's draft specialist. This doesn't include the Bearcat's Josh Whyle who is being projected as a FB conversion in the NFL

Huh?

The guy is 6'6, 250 pounds; in what realm are they considering him a FB!? lol

BTW, Wilcox blocked Chris Jones for a big Samaje gain in the KC game that was awesome...

I like Mitchell Wilcox to hold down the fort while Hayden is out. Mellow

He wasn't an overly great receiver in college, and he really hasn't done anything as a receiver in the NFL to-date.
10 rec for 76 yards in 27 games.
And for those curious, Wilcox has 387 offensive snaps in the NFL. So it's not like he hasn't had some opportunity.
It's more that he's extremely slow (4.88 40 time). He got a 2.40 RAS athletic score coming out of college.
He's probably never going to even be Sample-level...personal opinion anyway.

You're amongst my favorite posters but believe you're in for a surprise on what Wilcox will bring to the table.

Think he will play in the pros for a long time and pay dividends for the Bengals immediately.

Kind of hard to argue for or against a player we haven't seen much of really.

I'm kind of in the state of mind that next man up will work in this offense with other high-level players on the same field.

Sample being the outlier of course.

He was used more as a blocker but didn't really do a whole lot when the opportunity was given as a receiver.

Let's just sit back and see what Wilcox can actually do before debating his worth.  Smirk

What do you mean that Wilcox will be a surprise and pay dividends for the Bengals?
I need some time of numerical statistic that would be equated to paying dividends.
You talking getting 400+ yards in a season?
2000+ receiving yards while being a Bengal?
6+ TDs in a season?

I get that, but Mitchell not dominating in college (he was a solid TE in a weaker conference) nor having a highly athletic profile makes me skeptical he's going to blossom into a good dual-threat or receiving TE in the NFL. If people are mainly just talking as a blocker, that's ok, but it kind of limits his ceiling in the NFL and makes it more predictable what the team will do if/when he's in.
If he ends up proving wrong then great, but he hasn't really trended that way yet through his almost 3 seasons out of college.

RE: Any news on Hurst? - Frank Booth - 12-11-2022

everyone thinks the guy who never sees much snaps is a diamond in the rough

I don't think he'll be much more than a dump off pass type receiver and average blocker.

I was just saying in this offense at the current moment it's kind of hard to judge.

If Hurst is out for a while, we should be able to tell what he brings here.

I get that he was meh before but he's operating under different variables now.

Hell I'm not even sure if Hurst is the answer long term.

They need to draft or sign another TE in the off season even if he doesn't ask for too much money.

Since only 1 TE in the entire NFL caught 6+ TD's in 2021, I would say no

Only 12 caught more than 400 yds as well and with Chase Higgins. and Boyd being the main targets I will say probably not unless Hurst leaves and he becomes the feature TE.

If he plays his entire career as a Bengals could certainly see 2,000 plus yard though.

But I am saying that he will do his job and not cost the Bengals any games per boneheaded plays and contribute during this crucial part of the season when every game is paramount. Which I would call paying dividends.

Drew Sample had 349 yards in 13 starts back in 2020.
I consider that not good.
So I think any decent receiving TE should be able to get 400+ yards.
So for me, get 400+ yards and/or get 6+ TDs for me to consider a TE good in the passing game.
And for me to consider someone a "good" TE, they need to play significant snaps. If they aren't getting that, how can you consider that player good?
"Doing your job" and "not costing the Bengals games" does not equate to a good player, IMO. That's the bare minimum expectation.

This is exactly why I asked for your definition of paying dividends, as we clearly have different views on what that means.

RE: Any news on Hurst? - pally - 12-12-2022

Wilcox has proven to be a really solid blocker. And he did ok with his one official reception. He caught 2 but 1 was wiped out due to a holding penalty
