I'm sure it wasn't just Tobin. Our coaches seem to have a lot of say so in players they sign/draft.

Except when they don’t. Pollack supposedly wanted Creed Humphrey instead of Carman for example.

Find a DC known for fundamentals (like Tackling) and a rational scheme. We have some pieces so let's put what we have in a realistic scheme, get back to fundamentals and build off these foundations. We can keep Trey, Jenkins, McKinnley, Battle, Wilson, Pratt and Murphy. The rest needs to be rebuilt.

In the same vein find an OC with a rational scheme and play calling tendencies. Settle on a line scheme and then build to it. OBJr and Mims can function in either a zone or a power scheme. Get us under center either way and run more often to create a culture of winning up front.

Sign Chase, either trade or let Tee go. Then comes the biggest part - sit with Burrow and Chase and no matter what it takes SELL THEM on the rebuild. If it takes Tobin going away do it. If it takes expanding scouting do it. And when we draft we draft players to fit our schemes - which hopefully have been set and are more rational.

This is of course a fantasy because it requires ownership to get their heads out of their navels.

The Bengals are 6th in the league in Scoring Offense.  Burrow leads the the league in Passing Yards, is tied for the lead in TD Passes, and is second in Passer Rating.  Chase leads the league in Receiving Yards by 277 and in Receiving TD's by 3.  And they're doing it starting three Day 3 picks on offense, not to mention journeymen at TE.  Pitcher is going nowhere.  Lou, yeah, needs to go.  But if the defense could perform at all, we'd be a serious contender.

Pollack must have been overruled by Taylor or someone else then at that time.

Mike Brown is the one that wanted Carman. He personally reached out to Paul Alexander about him.

Mike Brown would fk up a wet dream so I can see why that one went the way it did lol

He destroyed his dad's legacy by himself.

Man, I did too. Sad.Gaah

Mikey Boy and Duke need to listen to the coaches and what they want in their scheme instead of this crap. Hard to judge Pollack if he
isn't getting the players he wants for his scheme. Is this happening on the DL with Hobby? His trenches have been shit too besides Trey
pretty much. Did Lou want Geno Stone? There are a lot of questions that need answering for us to know a solution...

I take that with a grain of salt.  I've literally seen it nowhere except a couple of times in this board.

Yeah, we don't know the truth about who wanted who but it I did hear the Piano Man liked Carman. I mean, I liked Carman too, but if the
guy has no heart it was never going to manifest. He was talented as we saw in flashes at LT. All I know is the current coaches should be
able to pick their guys for who they coach. It is sabotage otherwise.

If you take every game lost by <7 points "a W if not for one play", there's only going to be like 4 losing teams (instead of the current 15) left in the NFL, so nearly every bad team's fans can play that game.

But we're not talking about a less than one score game. We're talking about literally one single play in each of those 3 losses. Stop of 4th and 16, game over. Hit FG in OT, game over. Convert 2pt conversion, game...well, the game was "likely" over. Maybe.

A touchdown (both scoring one or allowing one) is one single play.

Not phantom/hypothetical/imaginary plays. Actual plays that happened in the game, i mean. Sure, it's a distinction without difference...to a degree. Bottom line is, good teams make plays to win, bad teams don't make plays and lose. Can't really argue they've not been a good team and the depth of blame is both sad and scary.

"If we didn't allow a TD on that 1 actual play that happened, we win." That's a hell of a lot less imaginary than "if we got a second try at the 2pt conversion because they call a penalty we might have converted it and then held on for a W."

Almost every team can point to various games where one play decided it.

Agreed with your bottom line. Always makes me think of those previous Chargers seasons where they always found a way to lose a close game.

I see what you're saying but it's still not the same as if they make 1 stop on 4th down, make 1 FG that would instantly end the game and convert 1 pass that would give them the lead with less than 40 seconds left...

Anyway. None of it matters. They are what they are.

RE: Probably time to rebuild - Joelist - 11-14-2024

It's kinda hard to say why this year's Bengals are the anti-clutch team. In past years they were more the team that came up with the big play.

Anyway, the reason I think the offense needs work also is simple. Right now the entire offense is Burrow plays hero ball with Chase. There's no fundamental identity and no ability to sustain over a whole game. Blame the Guards if you want - I blame the whole scheme which sets up offensive linemen to fail and lets defenses tee off because we have STRONG tendencies and almost never break them. We need to get under center more whether Burrow likes it or not, simplify the blocking and run more (and in those runs use schemes that let the line attack) to build confidence, cohesion and aggression. Also play with the routes to get people open.

RE: Probably time to rebuild - schroomytunes - 11-14-2024

I agree a semi rebuild is needed on this team, first thing they need to do is lock up chase. with that said what I'd like to see is this:

New Defensive Coordinator:

- Lou isnt a scheme genius, we need to be more physical, and rely less on the turnover margin. we play too soft.

Cuts:

1) Rankins- (9.5) absolutely no rush at all.
2) Moss- (3.5) we can do better in the draft or open market for a #2 back.
3) Hubbard- (?) we need to restructure him, or cut and resign BJ Hill.

Resigns:

1) Mike Hilton
2) Mike Gesicki
3) ADG-#3 LB
4) Cody Ford-Swing OL
5) Cal Adomitis
6) Joe Bachie-ST
7) Ryan Rehkow
8) Khalil Herbert-#3 back
9) Hubbard or BJ Hill- cant have both

Outside FA's:

1) Chase Young-DE- I think he will be solid opposite Trey.
2) Darius Slayton-WR- I think he would be a nice #2 for JoeyB
3) Alexander Mattison-RB- perfect #2 back in our system.
4) Javon Kinlaw- DT- size we need upfront to allow the DE's to pressure.
5) Jordan Fuller-SS- I think Vonn Bell is actually hurting Geno Stone.
6) Johnathan Jones-CB- provides the veteran CB in the secondary, allowing Hilton to play slot.

Draft:
IOL, OT, S, DL, CB, LB/DE hybrid pass rusher.
