On offense they should sign a high level starter at guard along with bringing back Cody Ford and Mike Gesicki. On defense I’d be looking to sign both Chase Young and Pona Ford think they can be had at reasonable deals then add a starter at linebacker opposite Wilson and a possibly a safety. Hopefully you can get something out of Jenkins, Jackson and Murphy along with the FA ‘s  and drafting DL early in a good D-line draft. I’m just rolling with the CB’s we have got to many high picks invested there need to see how it shakes out.

What we need on defense remains to be seen.  Assuming Golden brings the same or similar defense to the NFL that he ran at ND, then a player like Trey is nice, but not necessary in his scheme.  His is a Linebacker driven defense.  He frees up the linebackers with twists, stunts, delayed blitzes and using the DL to clog lanes, keep the OL off the backers and and to push pocket back into the QB to get him off his center.  He also uses spies on running QB's.

Trey while nice to have is not a bull, is only avg against the run and really isn't a good fit for this scheme.

The commanders just released Jonathan Allen

Earlier this week, Mike Silver of TheAthletic.com reported that the Commanders would release defensive lineman Jonathan Allen if the club couldn’t find a trade partner.

Now that has come to pass.

According to multiple reports, Washington has informed Allen that he will now be released.

The move will save Washington $16.5 million against the cap.

Allen, 30, was Washington’s No. 17 overall pick of the 2017 draft. He’s recorded 42.0 sacks with 60 tackles for loss and 118 quarterback hits over the last eight seasons.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Allen was limited to eight games with seven starts due to injury in 2024. He finished the year with 3.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, and seven QB hits.

Allen will now get a head start on free agency to find a new team for 2025.

So many Bengal fans lust for Chase Young.

I wonder why.

If someone thinks Chase Young is going to come in and live up to his 2nd overall draft pick status and become a double-digit sack guy, they have too high of expectations.
With that said, he is not even 26 years old and has a career average of over 6.0 sacks a season, so he can still produce solidly.

I had him as a potential realistic target for Bengals to replace Hubbard, as they don't need a stud, just someone who is solid or above average.

I think Young is someone worth rolling the dice on.
He should still be able to put up 5+ sacks on whatever team he goes to.

I wouldn't give him what he will likely want.  He appears to be a guy that takes a lot of plays off.  He does come through in some big moments, but I don't think his work ethic is conductive to building a young core of players.  Let someone else take that risk.

it seems the many of the playoff teams have an impact pass rush, we worry about losing a #2 WR which is much easier replaceable than a top tier pass rusher, plus if we lose Hill, this team and defense is in a world of hurt..

Heard he wasn't a good run stopper last year which isn't good if you are trying to replace Sam. But yeah, not against adding Chase Young.

He isn't going to all of a sudden become the player that everyone hoped, but he could be solid and be a better pass rusher than Sam.

Trade Trey for whatever you can now (ideally 2nd). Get his dollars off the books.

Go sign Jonathan Allen and Harold Landry for around what Hendrickson would have cost on 3 year deals (3rd year is an option in most contracts).

Not a bad idea Bengalbug. Think overall we would be upgraded. We lose a lot of sacks, but between Landry and Allen they could get 17.5 sacks
next year I would think and would be better in run Defense.

Plus we really do need some veteran leadership within that position group.

Yeah, we are really young now that Sam is retired and Trey could be leaving.

RE: Free Agency - Luvnit2 - 03-07-2025

The tampering period of free agency starts on Monday. My hope is we look at Becton and Fries at RG. I also hope we bring in Allen after he is cut. I would prefer him to Hill.

I am hopeful the FO fixes our trenches, at least one OG and at least one DT and if Trey leaves, at least 1 DE.
If we lose Trey, I hope we get a 2025 1st round pick at a minimum.

He is the reigning sack leader and has 34.5 sacks over the past 2 years, more than any other DE so he should command great draft picks.

I am in on Allen, I'd bet on the recovery from injury, but Landry really doesn't add much more than Murphy as a rusher. There are better options who will be similar in price in wave 2 of FA I think.

He has averaged double digit sacks his last 3 seasons he played (9, 10.5, 12).

You may be right, but if no one wanted him at $17m, how much is he really worth? $10m a year?

His actual win rate is low though. Sacks are a weird function of QB's because some decide to hold the ball and fall down and some run around and throw it away. Landry didn't win at a high rate but he converted when he did to sacks. He has value for sure and in wave 2/3 I'd be interested in him if we could put someone a bit more explosive, even if they have lower sack totals but high win rates, across from him.

He isn’t Trey, but he also isn’t Murphy… from what we have seen. He is somewhere in the middle.

Finishing has been Murphy's biggest problem. Landry knows how to finish sacks which is a major plus.
