As I said before, I don't like the way this was handled, and I blame his agent mostly. That said, it's over now, so I'm hoping the guy becomes the game wrecker for the Bengals that they think he will be. (And the little bit of Trey's cards just got worse)

Yes, and those other teams were having improved bonus payouts compared to what the Bengals normally do.
The point was that if you want to make a player accept a negative change in their contract compared to what the previous guy (Mims) got, you need to give something in return. The Bengals were wanting concessions without giving up ANYTHING in return. Simply accepting one-sided demands isn't a negotiation, and is a terrible precedent to set.
I highly doubt that $500k was all they originally wanted, but again, it's called compromise.

Seemingly half the board just spent the last few weeks talking about how Stewart was probably already a criminal just hoping nobody found out and he'd lose his money for what he already did, how he was a cancer and they hoped he never played for us, how he was already a bust, and how "maybe he can go back to college another year and get a 5th sack".....
Now it suddenly hurts Trey?
Nobody on this team is replacing 17.5 sacks. I don't see Stewart really making any difference in the Trey-sized hole in our defense.

Now I'm hoping Nate is right about Stewart like he was about Mims. If he is, then Stewart could make a big difference.
I suspect Stewart told his agent to get it done. It wasn't a big compromise for the Bengals to shift some of the money forward from December to now, but I suspect everybody is now happy and can focus on integrating Stewart into the defense.
Stewart missed the earlier practices and now a full week since rookies reported last Saturday. I'm glad he didn't miss any more time.

Stewart got his bonus based on projections months ago. The number is a higher per cent than what the Bengals had been doing but I don’t think they could deviate. Sportico had it at 10.4 million. He just got some earlier

Per yahoo news the clause was "softened." Perfectly reasonable to have it in line with league norms. I'd be curious as to how much it was "softened." It sounds like Mr. Hiller did right by his client and helped players in general. I could've done without some of his and Stewart's comments, but I very much agree with only signing a contract that is in line with league norms for the 17th pick. Ownership gets to look like a pack of ineffectual skeezy weirdos for having tried to push for a more harsh clause only for their player to miss practice because of it. So I don't believe Brown and company when they say that it was all on the agent. Nor do I agree with the pissy, unprofessional tone that came out of the Stewart camp.

Good news he has 2 days to get in town and be ready for practice on Monday. I will think he goes through a full physical tomorrow and maybe works on the practice field after he signs the deal. At least that is what I would do if team to get some of the lost time back.

Yes, that's the "improved bonus payout" I was talking about. Not the actual number, but how it's paid out. Apparently the Bengals are slower to pay out their signing bonuses than others. (It lets the Bengals make more money on the money in the meantime rather than the player.)

A lot of people are complaining about the sack production but it looks like he play 'contained' (might have this wrong) on most passing plays while other dline stunted. Definitely was a playmaker in the run game though. Really excited to see what he and Myles Murphy can do playing next to each other.

His agent was a tool, no doubt. The front office were tools too. Asking for new language with no concessions was a recipe for shenanigans. It was surprising that 500k swayed it. At this point dude just needs to show up and show out. With Trey sitting in Florida the pass rush is thinner than a coked out fashion model. DE looking weak, gotta have a pass rush.

I see the owners standpoint , times have totally changed, what some of these players are getting into was not really in the realm of thought couple to a few decades ago plus now with all that guaranteed money, from a business standpoint need to protect your interest more and more
