"Austin has coached up the Lions’ defense since 2014. During that span, Detroit has finished third, 23rd, 13th and 21st in points per game allowed. This is what I remember too, especially the early part of 2017. Lions were a good fantasy football option this past year primarily for that reason.
That was also a staple of the Bresnahan defenses from the mid-2000's IIRC?

All too often, many are quick to look at a coach or players most recent achievement or failure, without paying attention to their respective body of work.

The Bengals have wildly better talent than the Lions on defense. I think that, generally speaking, that would keep the defense up there in points against average.... the turnovers this guy seems to be able to generate... Intriguing.

Looking forward to seeing who the choice is for DBs coach. Austin is a secondary specialist, perhaps the team is leaving that open for Austin to have input on?

Because Del Rio was a HC and much better as a Coordinator.
You can't sell me that Austin is better than Guenther. It's not even close out side of turnovers. Austin made our Offense look like a well oiled machine. That should tell you all you need to know. But his defenses has been so bad you know he'll come cheap. It's looking like we've gotten worse.
Only good move is Alexander gone, and I'm pretty positive that they'll blow his replacement.
Looks like you guys have to sit back and wait until 2020 for this disaster to play out, but the writing is already on the wall. Don't expect the media or many fans to think we took any steps forward this offseason so far.

Austin is a secondary whisperer; our CB that converted to a SS (Quandre Diggs) was looking like a pro bowler towards the end of the year; y'all already know about Slay and Quin.
Our front 7 is in the midst of a rebuild right now. All year, it consisted of: rookie but stud MLB (Jarrad Davis), solid starting OLB that has peaked and isn't good in coverage (Tahir Whitehead), and rookie 4th-round pick OLB (Reeves-Maybin); an injured Ziggy Ansah, Haloti Ngata for only a few games, a bargain-bin backup DT forced into the DT1 role (Akeem Spence), and a rotating door of backups on the ends (Anthony Zettel, Cornelius Washington, UDFAs).
Paired with some talent in the front 7, he can take a defense far. The 2014 Lions, which featured Suh, a healthy Ansah, Nick Fairley, Devin Taylor,/George Johnson on the DL, DeAndre Levy (Pro Bowl year OLB), Stephen Tulloch (solid starting MLB), and Tahir Whitehead (solid starting OLB as mentioned above), and a secondary complete with a year-2 Darius Slay, pro-bowler Glover Quin, Rashean Mathis, and James Ihedigbo...
I live in Michigan and the Wife is a Lions fan, so I see plenty of Lions. Ziggy had 12 sacks this year and Davis and Whitehead are studs. Darius Slay (pro bowl), Glover Quinn and DJ Hayden make an excellent secondary. I don't know if "lack of talent" is a valid enough excuse to fully excuse a 27th ranking.

I'd trade our secondary for theirs and I'd trade Dunlap for Ziggy Ansah any day. Whitehead and Davis are better than any Bengal LB outside of Tez.

Lack of running game is a reason for a bad defense, they are on the field more etc.. look at the teams at the bottom of offensive running 3 (Det, TB and Giants) are in top 6 of yards allowed on defense.

I'm not sure how much effect that really has. The Lions have always been a heavy passing team.
2014: 28th in rushing - 3rd in points allowed, 2nd in yards allowed
2017: 32nd in rushing - 21st in points allowed, 27th in yards allowed

So, his defense this past year was good at getting turnovers (mediocre at it in other years) and relatively bad at actually stopping points and yards from accumulating.
They do get a lot of sacks pretty consistently though.
If Zimmer and Guenther's philosophy was 'bend don't break' and prioritizing defensive efficiency over splash plays, is it fair to say Austin's philosophy is "for every touchdown we give up, we get a sack or turnover?"
I'm not sure I'm thrilled with the direction, but it would be nice to get more turnovers. If they can increase the turnovers without significantly losing the overall strength of the defense, I'd consider this a good potential hire.
That's all, of course, assuming that different coaching and play calling can reliably result in higher sack/turnover numbers.
