In many cases he is available with 3rd round pick. Sawyer sounds a lot like another OSU edge who was expected to be a fringe 1st round pick but eventually went in the third. Could history repeat again if the Bengals don’t take an Edge in the first? RE: Lucas Patrick - Joelist - 03-21-2025 (Yesterday, 09:55 AM)Nepa Wrote: 2024 PFF grades seem decent. But then you see Patrick had a 40.6 PFF pass blocking grade in 2023 and 30.8 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2022. And then I see those were with the Bears and those years no one rated well having to block for Justin Fields and his utter lack of pocket presence and/or awareness. But let's be honest - IF they sign him it is to fill out the depth chart at G along with Ford. I still expect another veteran G to be signed and a high draft pick to finish it. We said the same thing about Jenkins and Williams..... Here's the truth. Burrow isn't much different given he likes to hold the ball extra long.... He does have better pocket presence then the two mentioned, but what percentage of his sacks are on him and make the Oline look bad? Blocking for 4 seconds is going to be challenging rather it's Burrow, or Fields or Williams. I can't speak for others, my issue is the sacks that he receives 3 seconds or less of protection. Not only are the bad, it is when he is most vulnerable to take a huge hit and either get hurt or fumble. The goal of every team entering the draft, with few exceptions (like a team intending to draft a QB at the top of the draft) should be to have a starter at every position that they'd be comfortable starting the season with, even if they're just a short term solution. That prevents you from reaching. The Bengals did a decent job of that last year by signing players like Trent Brown, Geno Stone, and Sheldon Rankins. Now, those signings didn't necessarily work out, but it gave them the perceived depth required to feel like they didn't need to draft any day 1 starters. If this is the depth chart we have today, or if this + Patrick is the depth we have today, I feel like we'd NEED to draft a day 1 starter at OG in this draft. And that may cause them to reach for a player like Tyler Booker in the first round, instead of drafting a player at a more valuable position like DE or DT. I think that is fair & accurate. The scary part is how comfortable they are with guys like Drew Sample starting at TE. Scarier if it includes Volson & Ford. Stud starters: Burrow, Chase, Hendrickson, Higgins. Plus starters: C. Brown, BJ Hill, L. Wilson No worries: OBJ, Karras, Mims, Rehkow, Adomitis Could be better, but OK: Slaton, Pratt, CTB, Turner, D. Hill Needs upgraded, but we probably stick with it: Yoshi, Ossai, Battle, Stone, McPherson Sub-standard/Fix ASAP: D. Sample, Volson, Ford RE: Lucas Patrick - Tomcat - 03-21-2025 Looks like Bengals are signing Patrick to a 1 year 2.1 million deal. Unlike others, I believe this is a good grab. Lots of starting experience and doesn't allow the QB to get hit or sacked much which is what we needed from our Guards. Better run blocker than Volson as well. Have to Draft another Guard though if we don't bring in another one in FA. RE: Lucas Patrick - jj22 - 03-21-2025 Once again our coaches are doing the picking. I'm sure our Dline coach is familiar with him from GB, and our LB coach familiar with him from the Saints. Which makes sense, but this is what you get when you don't have scouts (and the one we do have needs to focus on the draft). It would be nice to have a scouting department that could find talent that maybe coaches aren't familiar with or haven't worked with before. But much of what we are seeing isn't about signing a gem (if we aren't going with a known name), it's about familiarity. Welcome Lucas Patrick! I like it at that number. Patrick is a high-end, versatile backup or a low end starter. But is still an upgrade from Cappa, Volson, & Ford. When healthy, at least. There are durability concerns here. Cappa, Volson, Ford have been oretty durable, at least. And Patrick's pass pro grades have trended upwards the last 3 years. I think Patrick is the #4 OL atm. We could cut Volson, though I think he sticks around through at least 1 more signing. Nothing about $2.1 mil prevents more signings or a draft pick. But he's an ideal backup: LG, C, RG experience. OTC/Spotrac have different Tee cap hits. OTC is lower this year and bigger next, while Spotrac is the opposite. The needle doesn't move with him being a starter granted, but if he is cheap depth (which he should be) then we are still short 2 guards and have a lot of work still to do. RE: Lucas Patrick - SunsetBengal - 03-21-2025 Welcome aboard! And since you didn't cost much, at least be a beast.. Come to think of it, I'd love to have a job where I could get a gig for over $2M, to just be an extra. RE: Lucas Patrick - RunKijanaRun - 03-21-2025 Not a fan. Not convinced he’s pure depth. They have Ford and Volson is still here. If they do plan to draft a guard in the first two rounds, there’s no inspiration for them to sign a starting caliber guard. I don’t think they’re doing anything else. At the Combine Sawyer measured in with sub 32 inch arms. That's some of shortest arms I can remember on a draftable edge prospect. I wonder if the NFL is going to take it with a grain of salt though because whoever was measuring OL at rhe combine was a solid half inch short on arms than what guys measured at both the Senior Bowl & East West Shrine. He will compete with the rookie and whoever else is still here come camp to start. They are essentially making sure they have bodies if the draft doesn’t shake out a specific way that they are comfortable starting. Think Trent Brown last year. |
