Already, two guards, a left guard and a right guard, have gone down for the season, one for the Buccaneers and one for the Rams. Good points as usual Nepa. We will have to offer something to get anyone decent from what I am seeing. If Prince keeps playing like he did last Friday and Adeniji keeps sucking OT actually might be the bigger need as I still think of both as Tackles for depth. Saw that with Stinnie, hopefully Cappa stays healthy for us cause if he does we sure got one hell of a deal and Brady probably should of stayed at home with the kids. Until there are serious injuries at the guard spot, we have on the team the players going into the season. Agree with all of this honestly, just spell Carman's name right lol (08-21-2022, 07:33 PM)TheFan Wrote: I like Carman and I want him to succeed. I have no idea if there are work ethic issues, it's just something that seems like it's been discussed a lot and hinted at. Playing on the edge can hurt Carman at times cause he can struggle against speed. I understand the move to Guard cause it hides that weakness and he is great at going against power when his hand placement is correct, inside and he sets well. Still a big move for him to go from all the way at LT to RG, let alone LT to RT. It was just the way everything has fell for him, he is better on the left side cause he is more comfortable there. We will see how bad Volson gets beat on tonight at LG and if Carman goes against Aaron Donald in practice this week. Aaron Donald has rare speed that even the best Guards in the NFL cannot handle too. This covid might of really hurt Carman. "Sure he was an atrocious RT, but his true position is LT, he'll be better there." That was the hope and that is all. Completely different players with completely different strengths and weaknesses. At least Carman is already strong and can move people. Ogbuehi was weak and athletic. Kind of like Adeniji if we want to compare. RE: Volson with 1st team - bengals1969 - 08-21-2022 What LG problem? He’s going to have his ups and downs - like any rookie, but he at least looks like he belongs out there. I’d say the job is his at this point. Playing in between Jonah and Karras will make life a little easier for him. RE: Volson with 1st team - Dr.Z - 08-21-2022 (08-21-2022, 09:03 PM)bengals1969 Wrote: What LG problem? Ha. Nice. Beat me to it. RE: Volson with 1st team - Essex Johnson - 08-21-2022 Solid start overall but will have show it again next week to secure Starting position . RE: Volson with 1st team - ochocincos - 08-21-2022 My observations of Volson through this Preseason Game 2:
I did not watch every single snap, and I didn't stop and rewind to look at things closely, but I was focusing specifically on him for about every offensive snap I did watch, which was over 3 quarters worth. I can see him starting at LG if the Bengals don't bring anyone else in, and I can see him doing some good things, but I really do see him being a below average starter for a while. Personally, this game solidified my desire to get a veteran to hold down the LG spot while Volson continues development. EDIT - One other positive thing I forgot to mention is I do see some push off the LOS in the run game. He does go down a lot to block low, but that might be coaching. Honest question as I haven't really payed that much attention to whose been signed or not. I would guess though most that are probably wouldn't provide much of an upgrade over what Volson showed tonight or what your critiques were. For what it's worth I saw it very similarly. RE: Volson with 1st team - Whatever - 08-21-2022 (08-21-2022, 11:11 PM)ochocincos Wrote: My observations of Volson through this Preseason Game 2: He definitely has athletic limitations and some vision problems. For example, he helped blow a guy off the LoS on a double team block at the POA in the 1st half, but it could have been a TD if he would have gotten off the double team and onto the LB. I saw some waist bending and lunging from him, particularly in the 4th quarter. Counter moves and speed he struggled with at times. He got worse and worse as the game went on, even winding up on his back in the run game in the 4th quarter. That raised the question for me as to whether he has the conditioning to play 60 minutes against NFL talent. He could be serviceable as long as he can learn to recognize stunts and maintain his level of play for 60 minute. But I was thinking after the game that we lost the superbowl with Donald beating our LG and I don't think Carman or Volson are better than Spain at this point. Not sure what my point is but I would feel better if we weren't counting on 4th Rd LG that looks as though he will have growing pains with not the strongest depth across the rest of the line. RE: Volson with 1st team - bfine32 - 08-21-2022 The dude can stop a dlineman when they engage. Outside of that.... It’s not ideal that we’ll still have somewhat of a weak link at LG, but that’s a hell of a lot better than the entire right side. At least Volson looked decent against the Giants starters early on. Jonah and Karras will help once they’re next to him, too. The conditioning concerns are probably fair. He did seem to wear down late in the game. RE: Volson with 1st team - 007BengalsFan - 08-22-2022 Volson is better than Carman at this point but I don't think he is the answer at LG, at least not for this year. I think the Bengals need to bring in someone else at LG or move Karras over to that spot and sign a new center like Tretter. RE: Volson with 1st team - bengals1969 - 08-22-2022 4th or not the question is can he play? Did he give up a sack? Get flagged for holding? Bull rushed into the backfield? A year ago Volson was preparing to go against Albany, Valparaiso, Towson and today he stepped up against NFL starters, including a #5 pick. Damn impressive. I like this but why has the Browns not brought him back with all the injuries they have at center? If he can play this would be the best move but it's getting late to bring in a new center, so the move needs to be made now if we are going to make one. The plan was for one youngster to take the LG job and at least one more to look like a capable backup T or G. That hasn't happened, but Volson is your best option on the left side. Again a versatile vet OL should have been signed in the 3-4M range. Now you have to compete with everyone for these 4+ season or older vets (we aren't winning a waiver claim). I know we are looking toward when the big cuts come Aug 30th, but the bigger date to look toward is the trade deadline. If Volson/Carman/Smith don't give you top 7 stability by then you have no choice but to deal for a fringe starter at least. He did give up a sack when he failed to recognize and pick up a stunt in the 2nd quarter. No holding penalties, but he did false start with the Bengals on the edge of FG range at the end of the game. He was beaten on that sideline catch by Taylor that was reviewed. He appears to not know his assignments very well. He had a snap in the 1st half where a run play was completely blown up when he brain farted and tried to pull right late and ran smack into the RG who was pulling left on a play that it looked like they were running to the left. Basically, he can drive block well and anchor pretty well. However, he has a lot of issues that he needs to improve on and some I don't see the physical tools to be able to overcome easily. Good news. Also Adeniji wasn't near as terrible this game. Thad Moss is better. Allan George though, that dude looked good tonight man. I like this guy and Jalen Davis as backup Corners. Also, D'Ante Smith needs to cut down on those damn penalties. Hope he improves like Trey Hill did today and even the dreaded Adeniji who did play much better. Saw Cochran make a couple good blocks after initially having some poor ones. Gaillard also had a few decent blocks. Pollack isn't the best pass protecting coach is what I have learned. Love the guy as a run blocking OL coach but this is clearly his weakness. I want Jacques Patrick to make this team, we will be rough to others if he does. RE: Volson with 1st team - Rubekahn29 - 08-22-2022 I’d much rather have a veteran at LG, but if I have to choose Carman/Volson, I would say Volson. He played much better against starters than Carman did against back ups. A lot of growth, some mental errors, but the effort and intensity is there. With Jonah and Karras being on either side, I think he may look better. Let’s see how he does this week against AD and company. |
