This is what I'm talking about with the media bait. Regardless of what his QB proficiency may be in the NFL, his publicity proficiency has definitely proven solid so far. I've heard he is sort of a tool irl from people who have met him, but at least there will be no Manziel issues with him.

It doesn't absolutely determine that he will be nothing more than a back up, but it certainly suggests as much.

Marvin Jones was a 5th round pick as well.  He's far from a star in my book, but Richard Sherman was too and he is a star.

So you never know what gems you might find in the later rounds.  However,  good, later round QB's are hard to find.

Do you realize how crazy the hype is? TWO YEARS SINCE HE HAS THROWN A MEANINGFUL PASS

Whoa, wait a minute! It's only been almost 19 months since he threw his last meaningful pass, not two years!!

So not to keep bumping my own thread but;

Shitty, sarcastic, hurtful, funny, and full of half-truths still this video is worth a watch.

Quality QBs found 5th round or later go:

(I will spot you Tom Brady)

Guess that mean I am pretty stupid to think that having a steal bar driven through my head might kill me.

I mean, it happened once a long time ago.  So that means I should just expect it to happen all the time.

Look at Fred lawyering ya'll.

Matt Hasslebeck, Jeff Garcia

But still a very rare occurrence.

And they would probably fall below the threshold of "quality" well, Garcia would.

Hasslebeck is probably a fair Dalton comp IMO

I've tried to prove that AJ's draft round was a fluke brought about by a number of causes. First there was the perceived quality of other QBs in that draft. http://www.businessinsider.com/2014-nfl-draft-quarterbacks-2013-10  He was also the victim of some bad press unrelated to his performance. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/10/report-a-j-mccarron-rubbed-teams-the-wrong-way-in-interviews/  Also his shoulder must have still been injured when he performed in the combine, but he still did well with a lack of arm strength being the main drawback. He sat out a whole year after being drafted so his combine performance is suspect as is this video where he still tests better than Teddy Bridgewater pre-draft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA7Be193E9g

I'm telling you, this guy could be our (or someone else's) franchise QB. He's literally being groomed for it whether you people believe in him or not. Dave Lapham was able to see AJ in the OTA's and commented on his ability to lead the team and wisely take the checkdowns as well as his "bad ass" attitude. http://www.espn1530.com/onair/lance-mcalister-7818/podcast-dave-lapham-previews-bengals-training-13793595

Also just to fuel the flames, I found a highlights video of him in a pretty good article. Its worth a read and maybe a watch if you're a fan. http://riverfrontball.com/2015/07/22/projecting-the-bengals-backfield/

Jeff Garcia made 4 Pro Bowls in a 10 year NFL career, passed for over 25,000 yards, and rushed for over 2,000 yards; yet somehow, this is not quality?

1.  Perceived quality of other QBs in the draft has ZERO to do with him dropping to the fifth round.  That makes no sense at all.  When there are lots of good QBs in a draft they get drafted early no matter how many there are.

2.  The fact that he did poorly in his interviews is no "fluke".  Instead it is a legitimate reason to drop him lower in the draft.

3.  The same measurement that ranked McCarron above Bridgewater also ranked them BOTH below Christian Ponder.  So it appears to be BS unless you are going to argue that Ponder is better than Mccarron.

How about some underwhelming QBs and busts taken in the 2nd round?

Jake Plummer
Kordell Stewart
Geno Smith
Shaun King
Quincy Carter
John Beck
Marques Tuiasosopo
Tarvaris Jackson
Chad Henne
Brock Osweiler (like Mallet we won't know what he can do until he's set to make 15 million bucks)
Brian Brohm
Tony Banks (isn't this guy in Genesis?)
Pat White
Todd Collins
Jimmy Clausen
Kordell Stewart
Kevin Kolb
Kellen Clemens
Drew Stanton

Holy crap, Dalton was taken in the 2nd round!  He could be like these guys!  Also, AJ Green was taken in the top 4...dude's gonna be Braylon Edwards!  Seriously though, it's all relative.  Is McCarron going to be any good?  Probably not, but the 2nd round (and 1st round) have their share of warning signs, too.

I get it, 5th round QBs aren't as likely to be good as 2nd round QBs.  I don't think I ever said to get rid of Dalton and play McCarron.  I'm just saying there is no lack of bad 2nd round QB talent, so feh.

Draft is a crap shoot.  Two words.  Jamarcus.  Russell.
