RE: They're Done!!! Our long wait is over - Ell Prez - 03-17-2025 (03-17-2025, 12:11 PM)jj22 Wrote: This is also the argument for not to sign Tee long term. Now we have to hit on these picks and the FO did nothing (update scout(ing) department) to signal a change in philosophy or renewed focus on scouting that it would require to suddenly start hitting on picks (that aren't top 5) again. We need to hit on picks regardless. The alternative to not signing Tee was to go FA. And what’s more likely? Bengals singing their own or external? RE: $125 million for 3 Players - jj22 - 03-17-2025 It's not fair to the rookies to expect starters to help win a championship from rounds 3-6. With 6 picks you guys sound like you are expecting them to all hit. And as we currently stand we need all 6 hit and play. I'm not sure that expectation is the definition of a good draft or realistic. No matter that Ford looked a bit better by default, he's your 3rd tackle/6th man. Volson is good enough to have a job but can get pushed off by a late rd pick. Kirkland may have shown flashes but coming off an injury it's nuts to pencil him in even. They absolutely have to sign at least one vet even if they're replacement level (if football had a WAR stat). With all the defensive help needed and opportunities for Golden to mold his group, they take BPA but lean defense no way do you plan for a mid round rookie to start. I'm certainly not a fan of it...but i have to look at how they usually do things. Try guys out that are in-house first, before going another way. Maybe it plays out different, maybe not. We'll see soon enough. RE: They're Done!!! Our long wait is over - THE PISTONS - 03-17-2025 (03-17-2025, 12:13 PM)SunsetBengal Wrote: Exactly, what we had last year wasn't enough. Any news on how the cap shakes out, after the extensions are applied? The issue last year was we had 5-6 top end players, then there was a huge dropoff to the middle of the roster. All we're doing now is ensuring we keep the top end players at a much higher price. We added a couple marginal free agents. Maybe the run defense is better? But, we need pass rush. We need coverage. And...as unfortunate as it is, guys will get hurt. Don't know who, but it will happen. Right now, were counting on Ossai and Murphy...and I don't know that's wise. Yes. Might get 1 starter Day 1. And 2 starters over time. Most will be roster fodder. RE: They're Done!!! Would you agree any team losing 2 starting CB's would struggle in coverage? I agree with you, but hopefully we don't see the massive injury issues we saw at both CB and also DT. We lost Rankins and Hill in the same game. Jackson and Jenkins also missed time last year. So, we had all 4 top DT's injured and 2 were rookies. I love the Slayton addidtion and I am bullish on our now 2nd year DT's for 2025. I do agree also, I would love to see us sign a proven pass rusher to use on 3rd down. Well offense gonna have to score a lot. I see us losing a lot of high scoring games Hope the defense can recover or we might be in for a Stafford(lions) type of era RE: They're Done!!! I agree. RE: They're Done!!! Our long wait is over - phil413 - 03-17-2025 (03-17-2025, 12:21 PM)rfaulk34 Wrote: I'm certainly not a fan of it...but i have to look at how they usually do things. I would liken this to a Riley Rieff type bridge vet that with a 2 year deal with some guaranteed money in the 2nd year. Like Rieff they were willing to have some dead money in case of injury but had to have it to sign him. High end you'd land Scherff if he fits the scheme well enough, or even a Lucas Parrick. You need a capable starter in place even for a year, the other guard spot can be for competition....not both. RE: $125 million for 3 Players - Au165 - 03-17-2025 Right now you are betting on a couple things from the defense. Healthy DJ Turner and Dax Hill to play better than their replacements (Fair). Interior DL rookies to get better in year 2 (Fair). Getting MUCH better play out of the safety group (My biggest worry). Finding a rookie edge to start and be productive year 1 (Big Ask) or a wave 2 FA pass rusher to give us 8+ sacks (Fair). I am actually probably less of a doomsday person about the D than most here as I think a functional veteran opposite of Trey like Za'Darius Smith would give us enough pass rush help along with an ascending Ossai to be average there. I think the guys coming back can give us good enough coverage to be okay. I even think the two interior guys flashed enough later in the year to feel okay. The thing that REALLY bothers me is not doing anything at safety when Holland was had for a super affordable deal. We will see, but one thing to remember is we don't need to go from god awful to good with this team we just need to go from god awful to average and we can win a LOT of games. RE: They're Done!!! Our long wait is over - Nepa - 03-17-2025 I'm so excited today. Chase, of course, I knew would be signed. But I wanted both Ja'Marr and Tee, and I'm delighted we will be able to see both of them on the field. Yes, I know the Bengals need defensive studs and OGs to compete for a championship, but at least three of the four best players on the Bengals -- and three of the best players for the Bengals all-time -- are locked in for a number of years. RE: Happy Tampering Day - jj22 - 03-17-2025 They've made the Burks signing official. I read somewhere someone had wondered.... Sure, they were some of the weaker Os but we also shipped 44 points to an awful Steelers O. I don’t care about individual sack numbers if we can average under 17 points, which is what we did in 7 games with Murphy playing 40%+ of snaps (03-17-2025, 12:21 PM)jj22 Wrote: It's not fair to the rookies to expect starters to help win a championship from rounds 3-6. We don’t need all six to hit. I’m after one star and one good starter. That could be like 2020 (minus Burrow as he was no.1 overall) when we drafted Tee and Logan; 2018 (Bates and Hubbard); maybe 2017 (Mixon and Lawson), 2013 (Eifert and Gio), 2012 (Zeitler and Marvin Jones) but definitely 2011 (AJ and Dalton) and 2010 (Geno and Carlos). We do need some of our recent D picks to step up - particularly at CB. We do need a FA guard. The rookies might not be week 1 starters but I hope they are contributors by the time the playoffs come around. RE: $125 million for 3 Players - Lucius Cincinnatus - 03-17-2025 Paying your great to elite young players is hardly a bad thing and we should all be thrilled. We're going to have to draft well regardless and now we know we won't have to target one of the most valuable draft targets that you typically have to use premium draft capital to acquire yet also volatile (Wrs). Period. We signed Hill & Slaton to start. We are not gonna mothball Jenkins nor Jackson. That is a fact. If they sign a guard in FA it starts to whittle down the probable options at #1. The Ole Miss kid and the TTUN kid are waiving hello to the members of this MB. RE: $125 million for 3 Players - jj22 - 03-17-2025 and G, and DE, and DT, and ..... Asking a lot from these 6 picks. Burrow; Welcome to the Hot Seat - jj22 - 03-17-2025 Celebrating Burrow (and Chase and Tee) placing pressure on the FO in unprecedented ways to stay together means that any collapse of this plan fall solely on him. This is his vision of team building and thus any failure must fall squarely at his feet. All is great as long as the plan works. If it doesn't. The "I told you so" card is in the hands of the FO. How will fans react? Question? Does that put pressure on Burrow? RE: Burrow; Welcome to the Hot Seat - THE PISTONS - 03-17-2025 I don't think it puts pressure on Burrow. But, I think the front office will have trouble building a SB contender. RE: $125 million for 3 Players - THE PISTONS - 03-17-2025 (03-17-2025, 01:23 PM)jj22 Wrote: and G, and DE, and DT, and ..... Asking a lot from these 6 picks. I think they won't go DT. But, we need 1 Guard atleast and that's relying on Volson as the other Guard. A starting DE. A slot CB to replace Hilton and that's relying on Hill and CTB to start at CB without an upgrade. A starting safety to replace Vonn Bell. And that's starting Stone. Counting on the LB we signed from the Eagles to start. And counting on Pratt to start and be productive. Pratt and Wilson both appeared to lose a step last year. And counting on drafted guys like Murphy and Ossai to produce. |
