Doesn't help they didn't have a single DL over 300lbs. Just a massive talent gap between the OSU offense and ND defense. Really, between both teams in general. Not sure where Christian Grey is going on this play but he shouldn't be giving up that much outside leverage in cover 1 or cover 0. It made it way too easy for Smith to attack that leverage. Watch when he releases. He stems inside to square up with and when he starts turning his hips, Smith A steps back to the outside and has so much space to work with. He’s in such a tough position there. If he tries to guard the boundary, he’s worried about the post. Because he lets himself float a little bit inside and allow Smith to square up, he gives up the sideline. In usual Day style, he slammed the brakes on the O plus a fumble helped ND get back in. Oh and OSU consistently tackling receivers before they catch the ball, but not so much after. I still not sure we will be able to make him the top 3 paid DC in the NFL.. that is what it will probably take RE: New DC hired? - pally - 01-21-2025 Per Paul Dehner, Al Gokden is expected to spend today and tomorrow morning closing things with Notre Dame and is expected to in Cincinnati tomorrow afternoon for the meetings with Zac and the powers that be. He flipped back & forth the whole time. Howard was just damned near perfect in the first half. IIRC, he was perfect vs zone. Less so vs man, but he ran for 7-8 first downs, too. Curious that he would "close" things with Notre Dame if he wasn't dead-set on a job with the Bengals. It's the worst kept secret outside of Cinci. My bet is on wrapping up the contract details. You run more press man if you have either a stud secondary or a stud pass rush. Cincinnati has neither. Those zone schemes have worked out really well......oh wait. RE: New DC hired? - Nate (formerly eliminate08) - 01-21-2025 Cannot take too much from OSU beating on Notre Dame honestly. When the Buckeyes are playing good they can beat anyone as we saw. RE: New DC hired? - jj22 - 01-21-2025 We can't take much from the loss true, but we can take a ton from the aggression on 3rd and 11. And we should. That is philosophy that didn't adapt due to players..... Lack of aggression is not something I would like to see in our next DC. While I think Golden may be a better DC for us than Lou, I always wanted Eberflus the most and hearing about Golden not doing well against the Buckeyes does worry me a touch. No matter where the first down occurs, it likely ends the game the same. It’s not a whole lot different than the Jayden Daniels to McClaurin play. Sometimes the players make the play. If they don’t bring pressure? Will Howard might scramble for a first and he is getting killed for playing soft. Ohio state was clearly the better team and the fact ND made it interesting is a testament to that team, coaches and players. It could have been 42-7 if they played again. OSU pretty much shut it down midway thru the 3rd quarter. They didn't even look to throw the ball down the field, pretty much just tried to run the ball. Defensively they backed off the wrs and rushed with 3 guys. It would have been a blow out if they kept the pedal down.
