RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - rfaulk34 - 04-27-2019 (04-27-2019, 01:28 AM)NKURyan Wrote: Do you disagree? It seems pretty obvious that Sample will have a role as a blocker in this offense. Sure, he will have a role. Hopefully, a healthy, productive role. The Bengals just could have given him that role two rounds later. His role won't be any greater than any other player they could have taken and he wouldn't really be missed if he hadn't been taken. Guy's that were projected higher, logically, should have had a chance to have a greater role than just blocking someone when you can find warm bodies to do it almost as effectively, easier than you could find a guy to effectively play DL, LB or DB. Plugging Roland and Fisher in sure worked out fabulously. Two examples off the top of my head. The Bengals pay coaches and scouts to find the guys i can't be bothered to find for them. RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - rfaulk34 - 04-27-2019 (04-27-2019, 01:47 AM)Whatever Wrote: Running an extra OT out there sort of defeats the purpose of a blocking TE. The opposition knows you're trying to pound it, so they go to a heavier personnel group. With a blocking TE, you can still run your 11 personnel group on offense and force the defense to respond with nickel and have the advantage pounding the rock and the D still has to play honest and account for him in the passing game. And you could do all that with a 4th round blocking TE while getting someone else that could potentially help you out more in other areas. RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - psychdoctor - 04-27-2019 I still think the Bengals will draft a QB in round 4-5. Maybe Finley. You can make that argument with any player at any position group to justify taking another player. I don't think they would have spent a 2nd round pick on a blocking TE if they didn't think it was important for their offense and/or they thought they could get him later. The need pick would have been the best LB left on their board, and they still got the best LB left on their board. RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - Lionel Hutz - 04-27-2019 10 picks tomorrow. Will even one of those picks make any noticeable difference to this club next year? Comp picks and trading down, for what? RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - Joelist - 04-27-2019 Alternately you can think of the Sample pick in the context of the offensive system ZT is installing. He CLEARLY wants to be able to play power football and control the Line of Scrimmage and also to use the same formations for running and playaction. Sample fits this like a glove as he is far and away the best blocking TE in the draft. Difference-makers were still on the board at that point and Bengals had to select a run-blocking, depth tight end. Worst pick of 2nd round, by far. Read it again, I didnt claim you named a specific player you wanted, which is what you said when I quoted you. I simply stated you clearly had guys you wanted and guys you didnt which is why we are here with you whining about the guy you clearly did not want. You have literally been every other reply in this thread for a couple hours whining about Sample so yea you are rambling. Again boo hoo you think your rankings or any random sites rankings matter, they dont, the Bengals took the guy they wanted and you have no idea if he would have been around in 4 or even 3 for that matter. Maybe if you whine hard enough we can get a comp pick or something, keep it up champ. You don't know if he would have been picked later in the 2nd round. You're just speculating. You don't even know if he's really going to be 3rd string. He could be out there for most snaps. How do you know that we aren't going to have 2 TE sets and run the ball/play action a lot? You have no idea how Taylor wants his team to play. It was not a splashy pick but he is a very good run blocker and I think we need to feed Mixon. I am not ready to trash on it. Eifret will be hurt by week 5 at best and then all we have is CJ. We needed a TE and went with the guy we liked. I don't have a big issue with it. That being a bad pick is undeniable. You weren’t in that room. He had a reason to think he needed to take him then. Best blocking TE in the draft. Our TE coach said he knows other teams in the NFL who had Sample rated way higher than the media guys, and he said he was worried he wouldnt be there even when we got him. Who would you rather believe, a bunch of dumbass reporters, or NFL coaches? RE: ***Official 2019 NFL Draft Discussion Thread*** - NativeTheory - 04-27-2019 Guess we’ll never know if he would have been available later in the draft or if we got him just at the right time. I’m sure at least one other team had their eye on him. Definitely can see his value on our team and good to get a player who was the best in the country at something. Will reserve my judgement on whole draft and any specific picks until I see how the whole 3 days plays out. I will say I’m going to trust in Zach Taylor until he shows me a reason through results not to. The need pick would have been the best LB left on their board, and they still got the best LB left on their board. Yeah, that is pretty much exactly the point. They drafted for what they wanted with no idea of the players value and draft position. It is impossible to claim he was slotted there and you got value. I mean, we can get a blocking TE on the waiver wire or off the practice squad. But even if he turns out to be a Kroft was that worth a 2nd? There was soooo much talent on the board in the 2nd you want value and an impact player. Many had Layne as the top rated corner in the draft. The dude wowed at the combine with unreal verticals and speed. He had production. He was young with room to grow. And now he is in Pittsburgh and we have to face him the next decade. And they show how a good team fixes as a defense. They traded up and got a LB and fixed their secondary. We let Thornhill go has all pro safety potential. There was tons of WR’s and the Ravens too Jaylen Edwards who sack Dalton for the next decade because lord knows he is cheap so we’ll keep him. We gave up Drew Lock for this blocking TE. If anyone doesn't see how insane this pick was they are just a blind homer. Everyone out there is calling it the worse pick of the draft. It's also that he's a very high character and work ethic guy, as well as being a film room junkie and a self proclaimed perfectionist in practice. I think all those things combined made Sample the pick. He fits what Taylor needs from a schematic point of view, but also from a locker room / culture mentality as well. While trading back seems to be the biggest gripe obviously The Bengals feel that Sample will give the team a new dynamic they didn't have last year. They also got an extra pick in round four. The total improvement that Sample and the other pick they got in the trade back will determine how this compared to just taking one player. Did they have this pick already penciled in and traded back for value? Smart. I think if we would get the #1 OT at #11 ahead of time we would be ecstatic. I believe having Sample will give the team a new type of threat that opposing defenses will have to adjust to. The third pick is going to shore up the weak linebacking corps. They are knocking it out of the park so far IMO. |
