Taking Responsibity - pally - 09-10-2018 How many times have we bitched about Marvin never saying the words " I have to be a better coach" In a breath of fresh air moment, DC, Teryl Austin did just that. <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8">
RE: Taking Responsibity - bengals67 - 09-10-2018 I really like Austin. There is a good chance he is our next Head Coach. RE: Taking Responsibity - Au165 - 09-10-2018 It did seem like the way the LB threw his hands up he thought there was help over top, which obviously there wasn't. I wonder if that was a case where a sight adjustment was supposed to be made and the LB and Safety weren't on the same page because of the late play call coming in. RE: Taking Responsibity - HarleyDog - 09-10-2018 I read that earlier and was impressed. Stand up guy. It looked more like a breakdown between the LB and Dre. From the replay it looked like Dre started to break deep to cover the TE (maybe just faking to get Luck to not throw it) but then crashed back down to cover the RB. It seemed like the LB saw Dre start to run with the TE so he moved farther into the zone thinking Dre had it over the top. Looking at it again I think you are right, still an issue of call coming in late but different mess ups. I'm thinking Dre thought it was man because of the count and everyone else was playing Cover 3 (You can see opposite side they are playing 3). You got Fej on the inside playing the seam on the 3 man then trying to come over late when he realizes there is no help for Evans. It was a smash fade concept but more of a wheel out of the TE, so what should have happened is Evans passes the wheel to Kirkpatrick and covers down on the hitch underneath. Okay I found another view and I am back to my original thought, I think it was a man 2 shell. On the other side Bates is playing off with better depth so he can break down on the inside. Fej played down on the inside man early declaring leaving EVans alone, I think he may have been the over top guy on that side. There was some breakdown on that side, it was Fej or Dre but it really is tough to tell without a over top view. I am leaning towards Fej now though the more I look at the new view. RE: Taking Responsibity - Au165 - 09-10-2018 Well I'm all confused I was thinking Ebron TD this whole time haha. In any case yea there was some confusion on that play. RE: Taking Responsibity - leonardfan40 - 09-10-2018 Definitely nice to hear a coach step up and admit that he shares blame with what happens on the field. Or maybe it’s just nice having a coach who can actually see his own faults and weaknesses and will try to improve on them. Except ML says in whilst talking in circles. I like the coaches that actually talk to specific actions - 'I did not get that guy enough snaps", etc. RE: Taking Responsibity - Awful Llama - 09-10-2018 (09-10-2018, 03:25 PM)bengals67 Wrote: I really like Austin. RE: Taking Responsibity - Pat5775 - 09-10-2018 Wow... Owning up to his mistakes. That's a nice breath of fresh air... I've been ripping Austin a new one slice yesterday but if he's willing to own up to his mistakes, I'll gladly forgive him... This time. You've recognized what you did wrong, now fix it. RE: Taking Responsibity - TSwigZ - 09-11-2018 It’s still concerning how easy Luck moves the ball up and down the field with no real run game. I feel better now but damn we can’t get away with that all season RE: Taking Responsibity - fredtoast - 09-11-2018 (09-10-2018, 10:19 PM)Pat5775 Wrote: Wow... Owning up to his mistakes. I think there is a lot more to it than that. RE: Taking Responsibity - sandwedge - 09-11-2018 I will like Austin more, when I see him do something "un-Marvin like", meaning play tight on WRs and no cushion..... Cushion is based on down distance and coverage shell. You can't blanket say they play too much off or too tight because it is all specific to the situation. We'll lose 13 straight and win the last 2 to save Marv again . NAH..We ain't losing 13 straight..or at least I certainly hope not . One thing is clear . Andrew Luck has a damn accurate arm especially on the short throws. Since Marvin became our head coach the Bengals pass defense ranks 4th in interceptions 6th in passer rating 7th in fewest tds allowed If you look at just the 5 most recent seasons ('13-'17) Bengals pass defense ranks FIRST in interceptions 2nd in fewest tds allowed 2nd in passer rating There are lots of legitimate reasons to bash Marvin. His pass defense is not one of them. I'd like to see where we rank on stopping opponents on 3rd down. Even Marvin said our D needs to improve on 3rd down. I can us being 2nd in TDs allowed. Teams dinked and dunked on us, till the field shrunk in the redzone and we defended the pass pretty well resulting in FGs. Which goes back to why can't we stop worrying about the big play over the top and tighten up the coverage the entire length of the field? |
