What’s with all the 3 year deals? - Yojimbo - 03-15-2019
Is that when the CBA expires? Is that the amount of time Taylor is being given to prove himself?

Aren't they being set up as three year deals that can be walked away from after a year or two with limited repercussions?

if they are set up like harts then yes haven't seen the details on the others yet.
Basically a 1 year deal with 2 years of options (when looking a a dead money standpoint)

It probably has to do with the number of important free agents we will have in 2020. Just spreading things out a bit. The way the contracts are built there is a minimal impact if they get cut after this upcoming season

Yes. When the new league year starts in 2021, the CBA will be expired. So I guess 2020, and 2021 are right?

We have 1 player remaining (Uzi) from the 17 players we picked in the 2014 and 2015 drafts. I think it is an effort to reinforce the part of the roster that is totally missing from those years with younger guys in their mid 20s with a good amount of NFL experience. Generally from those 17 drafted there would be more than one that was extended.

So, they are pretty much guaranteed a roster spot for this season then. Keyword being after.

This right here is what sank the Bengals. The 2014 and 2015 drafts were supposed to have key replacements/upgrades, but they really didn't have any.
2016 draft was pretty good. WJ3, Boyd, Vigil, Billings were solid starters last year. Westerman has played well every opportunity he's seen. Fej has been solid in a backup/ST role. Core has been good on ST, but that's about it. Overall, it's a been a far more productive class than 2014 or 2015.

When you depend on the draft like the Bengals then back to back drafts like that can sink a team.

The Contracts Are Phony
Some insightful work done by Jason Fitzgerald at Over The Cap. I asked him for the total number of contracts of three years or longer in the last few free-agency periods. Let’s isolate on 2015 and 2016. Of the 197 lengthy (three years or more) free-agent contracts signed in those two years, 121 of the players never made it to the third years of their deals. That’s 61.4 percent of big free-agents, gone after one or two years. The clear majority of free-agent contracts beyond two years: window-dressing.
