Defensive Rankings 2018 vs 2019 - ochocincos - 10-03-2019

I know the focus has been greatly on the offense so far this season, but the defense is playing very poorly yet again.

2018:
Points per game allowed - 30th (28.4 ppg)
Yards per game allowed - LAST (413.6 ypg)
Passing YPG allowed - LAST (275.9 pypg)
Rushing YPG allowed - 29th (137.8 rypg)

2019 through 4 games:
Points per game allowed - 28th (27.5 ppg)
Yards per game allowed - 24th (386.2 ypg)
Passing YPG allowed - 17th (243.2 pypg)
Rushing YPG allowed - 27th (143 rypg)

It's worth noting that the biggest pass-centric team the Bengals have played so far in 2019 has been the 49ers, but no QB has thrown for 300+ yards against the Bengals. Instead, they have gashed the Bengals on the ground. While the Bengals aren't as low in the rankings in Rush YPG compared to 2018, the actual Rush YPG allowed is higher.

Keep this in mind, as the Bengals fired Teryl Austin after just 9 games last year, and he had to go against better offenses than the Bengals have had to this year so far (most notably KC and NO).
If this defense doesn't improve by the bye week or at least by year's end, Lou Anarumo could have a very short tenure with the Bengals.

Don't worry...a new coaching staff will coach these guys up and have them performing better!

We as Bengals fans don't know what the word "worry"  even means. We have never had to worry about anything especially this season when it's pre-carved in stone just how sucky this team is. It's kind of like being concerned about the piano falling from the 93rd floor directly above you from 3 inches away that it may land on you and cause some type of injury if not actual death..  Worrying is for the worrying class. The only question you should be concerned with is are you worried that the Bengals may actually win a game this season?

Wait, you're saying that our 53rd choice for Defensive Coordinator can't get more out of a defense that added no new pieces other than a 3 round LB?!? Shocked!

We'll likely win 2-3 games this season. We have Sean McVay-lite as our coach!

I think most everyone was expecting/hoping to see improvement by the LBs and in the run game with new coaches too. So far, we haven't seen that. Very disappointed with Lukabu. I'm not surprised with Anarumo because he's only really been a DB specialist.

Speaking of him being a DB specialist...guys like Jackson, Kirkpatrick, and Bates appear to have regressed.

Webb - 52.9
Jackson - 57.4
Kirkpatrick - 57.6

Bates - 42.1
Williams 53.7

True they are under-performing too, but it's important to remember that the coordinator doesn't (or shouldn't) spend time with individual positions to coach them up. That's the position coach's responsibility.

Technically, he has. Our defensive rankings, while still poor, are better than last year. Sooooooooooooooooooooo there's that.
