Usually I choose to believe everything Marisa Contipelli says but not this time. I think Zac Taylor is in denial about how awful the Bengals are. Andy Dalton reminds me of Manning — Archie, not Peyton or Eli — because if he played anywhere but the Saints he would have been legendary.

Absolutely.
Also, I think we were spoiled by the dramatic turnaround Marvin Lewis made in 2003. That year’s team looked like it was going places — which it was. This year looks worse than 2002.

Most teams that are this bad...have a lot of young players. A young QB, etc.
We're a veteran team that's this bad. That likely means we've yet to bottom out.

So the playbook for hiring a new HC, includes that coach or whoever examining the roster and upgrading 2-3 deficient positions.
Had we say added a quality LB and a Guard...Hicks and Saffold...imagine how much better we'd look.

That's why people should be a bit annoyed. Coming into this year we weren't thinking so much about the growing pains of a young HC and his new roster, we were sold a win-now mentality and people (me included) bought into the whole notion that there is no way this team could win less than the 6 games we won last year.
We didn't come into this season looking for encouraging signs over W's, we expected the fact that we couldn't mess with our winning roster to mean that they had talent.

Did he mention the 4th and 1 inch call when he talked about “plays not getting done”? Sometime I think coaches are the dumbest football people on Earth.
I’d be curious to hear him list his reasons for optimism. I hope “We came back and almost beat a winless team” isn’t one of them.

He has to sell that the team isn't as bad as it's record to the media and fans regardless of what he actually thinks. Comes with the job.
The Bengals are actually the 13th youngest team in the league, far from a veteran team.
It would not surprise me if they start dumping vets for draft picks. Tobin was apparently at LSU-Utah State scouting QB's Jordan Love and Joe Burrows.
