Have Bengals Drafted D Player Up For Heisman Ever ? - kevin - 12-06-2019

YES....Ross Browner came very close to winning Heisman that often goes to QB or RB. They should call it the darn QB or RB award.

Ross Browner for a Defensive Player came very close in the voting. He was a big part of the Defense that went Super Bowl.

I mention this with another Defensive Edge Rusher in the running for the QB or RB Heisman. Chase Young.

A D player up for the Heisman is almost as rare as Haley's comet. It is indeed a QB or RB award.

Ross Browner had 213 points in the Heisman voting in 1977 while the winner 1547 points, a difference of more than 1300 points. He wasn't "Very close" as you say, simply mentioned but had no real shot of winning the award. There have probably been 10+ defensive players who came closer to winning it than him since he played. Not trying to be a dick, just pointing out there is no real need hyperbole.

One funny note, we actually did draft another D player who recieved Heisman votes....Rey Maualuga. Not that he was close at all, just kind of a funny anecdote that he actually receive Heisman votes.

Suh was the last one that got serious consideration for the Heisman as a defender.

Manti Teo was actually much closer to winning the Heisman than Suh, only missing by 300 points compared to 500.

That will happen when Colin Klein, Marquise Lee and Braxton Miller are the other top vote getters as opposed to Mark Ingram, Toby Gerherdt, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow.

Charles Woodson won the Heisman, but the Bengals didn't draft him, either.

A D player i don't think so

Quote:The Heisman is usually awarded to a running back or a quarterback; very few players have won the trophy playing at a different position. Two tight ends have won the trophy, Larry Kelley and Leon Hart. Also, Desmond Howard and Tim Brown won as wide receivers. Charles Woodson is the only primarily defensive player to win the award, doing so as a defensive back, kick returner, and occasional wide receiver for Michigan in 1997. Legendary linebacker Dick Butkus only placed sixth in 1963 and third in 1964 and could qualify as an interior lineman, as he played center on offense during his era when two-way players were still common. The highest finish ever for any individual who played exclusively on defense is second, by defensive end Hugh Green of Pittsburgh in 1980 and linebacker Manti Te'o of Notre Dame in 2012. Although the Heisman is named in honor of an interior lineman, no interior lineman on either side of the ball has ever won the award. Offensive guard Tom Brown of Minnesota and the offensive tackle John Hicks of Ohio State placed second in 1960 and 1973, respectively. Rich Glover, a defensive lineman from Nebraska, finished 3rd in the 1972 vote—which was won by his Cornhusker teammate Johnny Rodgers. Washington's DT Steve Emtman finished 4th in voting in 1991. Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska finished fourth in 2009 as a defensive tackle. Also, Kurt Burris, a center for the Oklahoma Sooners football team, was a runner-up for the award in 1954 and Orlando Pace finished fourth in 1996 as an offensive tackle for Ohio State.[citation needed]
