RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - THE PISTONS - 09-02-2022 The Bengals were at the top of this list for years and years. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - Synric - 09-02-2022 Its not a surprise they aren't on this list considering the roster turnover after 2019. Most of their starting defense is from Free Agency. Quite frankly, until recently...their drafts had been bad too. Kind of flies in the face of the narrative of free agency being bad though. Once his next contract kicks in our % will have to rise. For better or worse. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - Synric - 09-02-2022 (09-02-2022, 11:57 AM)THE PISTONS Wrote: Yes. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - BigPapaKain - 09-02-2022 We had one of the highest percentages of retention for years and what did that get us? Mind you I'm a huge proponent of keeping your own, but whatever we're doing now worked. There were some of us arguing for years that we needed to use free agency more with some Tier 2 and 3 guys. Bam...we did that and it's working! Of course, having Burrow helps a lot. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - WeezyBengal - 09-02-2022 So we have drafted poorly the past few years? Kidding...kind of. I am not sure what question this really answers, though. And is the answer to the question a good one? Do you want to be on this list, or not? Because the Bills and Rams are at the top of this list and they are two of the best teams in the league. In my opinion it doesn't really matter. I could give two shits if the talent on the roster is home grown or not, as long as it's there and you aren't swinging and missing on both draft picks AND free agents. To me there isn't much of a correlation to winning whether your roster is homegrown or through free agency...it just comes down to having good players. "Whatever we are doing now worked". Drafting Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase is what we are doing now that has worked. It has way more to do with them then ANY free agent we have brought in. You could argue the core of guys that actually matter on this team are guys that we have drafted. Chase, Burrow, Mcpherson, Logan Wilson, Pratt, Bates, Boyd, Higgins, Jonah, etc. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - fredtoast - 09-02-2022 (09-02-2022, 11:57 AM)THE PISTONS Wrote: Kind of flies in the face of the narrative of free agency being bad though. I don't remember anyone ever saying free agency was bad. Claiming free agency is bad is like saying broccoli is bad for you because if you eat nothing but broccoli you won't get enough protein in your diet. They'd talk about the Redskins and how they sign big-time free agents and don't win. But, yes - It has to be a mix. You need to draft well and sign the right free agents that fit the system. It's not one or the other. It's a mix. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - psychdoctor - 09-02-2022 It is interesting that the FO for the Bengals can appraise established talent via FA but had difficulties evaluating and drafting successful rookies, especially later in the draft process. In addition, the Bengals have had a nightmare evaluating OL talent in the past. This raises the question regarding the size of the scouting department and who was actually evaluating the talent. I think Zac Taylor and the coaching staff are better outside of Drew S and Carman. It illustrates that metrics and observable talent doesn't necessarily lead to a successful career in the NFL for any team draft selection. Case and point is Leatherwood. Case and point is Leatherwood. The draft is more of a crapshoot than any of the "experts" want to admit. Even the best teams in the league miss on first round picks, and every year there are players taken in the late rounds (or undrafted) that develop into solid NFL players. For example, most fans think that a third-round pick should develop into a starter, but from '01-'15 almost half (47.3%) of third round picks started less than 17 games TOTAL in their NFL careers. Only a little more than a third (37.5%) started more than 34 games for their careers. So the odds are that you will NOT find a starter in the third round. I think the Raiders FO with Gruden and Mayock did poorly though. I agree with you though, it is crapshoot. Bengals seem to do well with WR. Heck the hit rate on 1st Round picks isn't as high as the average fan thinks too. Yet fans are like trade Bates for a pick! Now I realize cost and potentially losing a player for nothing factors in, but odds of a draft pick turning into a really good player are low. RE: Homegrown Player Percentage List - J24 - 09-02-2022 Out of our 22 starters 10 are via free agency/Trade that's roughly 45% of the lineup. In 2018 there were 3! A lot has changed since Zac has taken over. And someone above mentioned Washington missing on so many big FAs . . . The Bengals hit on a bunch of mid level FAs, they didn't chase the big names. Even Hendrickson and Reader came here "on the backs of bigger names", so they weren't the most sought after when the Bengals signed them. Missing on the o-line so many times hurts the Bengals on this and the Out Of The League stat also posted in another thread. |
