Betting on Games With Undecided or No Outcome - Science Friction - 01-03-2023

Let me say, first off, that I know almost nothing about how betting on sporting events works. I know about the odds and the mathematics but almost nothing about the process. I've never placed a bet.

What happens with all the money that people wagered on the game last night. If I had , say, handed over 1,000 coconuts on the Bengals to win last night and the game is ruled a no contest, would I just lose my money or is it returned, or what? Where is all of the monies that was gambled on the game last night?

I need enlightened on this subject.

Usually they have some sort of rules for things like this but I think it can be different based on the betting agency and their guidelines. In most cases I think a refund is issued if the game isn't completed.  Here is an article with some info:

https://www.wcpo.com/money/consumer/dont-waste-your-money/will-fans-get-refunds-for-bets-made-on-bengals-bills-game

Some examples from the article.

Quote:FanDuel, currently the largest online betting forum in Ohio, says refunds depends on if a game is restarted within two days. Since that will not happen, it appears FanDuel betters should soon seen their bets returned to their account.

Quote:Caesars Sportsbook has yet to tweet or announce but says in its house rules that games postponed or canceled (due to COVID) typically will result in a "No Action" refund.

Basically as the game hasn’t been voided yet all bets on most betting sites are still valid.

If they call a game a no contest everyone will get their money back.

If they call the game a tie as a gesture of goodwill I think most sites will give money back and pay out those people that bet a tie.

If the NFL pulls their finger out and makes a decision on the game resuming all bets will still be valid so say if somebody bet on Hamlin to get an interception that bet will lose as he went off injured grim I know.

What if the league decided just to end the game as a 7-3 Cincinnati win? So those that bet Bills would lose? I guess those would be some irate gamblers. Can you imagine betting your life savings on the Bills, only to have it ruled as a 4 point Bengals win after less than a quarter of play.

My son had the Bengals/Bills as part of an 8 game parlay. When he went to cash out, it (Draft Kings) had removed that game from his list and gave him the payout that he'd earned up to that point.

Not a chance that happens same with awarding the Bills a win would cost the bookies millions they would never allow it with the NFL.

I asked this question in another thread, but this is more appropriate. I wonder how it'll affect Fantasy Football leagues.

In my Dynasty League We had Josh Allen, Tee Higgins and Gabe Davis all playing in the finals. Now we just play for fun, but some are big $

Does anyone worry that the NFL and big money gambling interests makes games subject to rigging(not scripted, but not necessarily a level playing field in some games). Do you fully trust Goodell and his NFL?

Quote:At every major American sportsbook, bets on suspended games are voided “unless played within the same scheduling week.” The NFL confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that Bills vs. Bengals would not resume in this scheduling week.

“The NFL has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date,” the league said in the statement.

In the minutes after the statement’s release, FanDuel voided all wagers associated with the contest. The sportsbook had released a statement earlier on Tuesday that it was awaiting further notice from the league before taking any action.

As of publish, DraftKings had yet to refund all bets made on Bills vs. Bengals. Pregame wagers had been refunded while lives ones hadn’t. The sportsbook has not released any public comment since Monday night.

Caesars had yet to void all bets, too, as of the publish of this article. Their only public statement came from the company’s official Twitter account on Monday night: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Damar Hamlin.”

BetMGM had also not yet refunded all wagers as of Tuesday afternoon.

“We ask for patience regarding all bets on [the] Bills [vs] Bengals game tonight,” the company said in a tweet late Monday night. “Right now, all thoughts and prayers from BetMGM are with Damar Hamlin and his family.”

All are expected to void bets and refund wagers under their terms and conditions.

Businesses that deal in the gambling industry don't really need to cheat or be rigged since the vast majority of people who gamble lose money to them with the "fair" regulations that are already in place.

Fanduel voided my bets on that game and returned the money. Not sure when exactly it happened, but sometime today.

If you bet your life savings, you got what you deserved.
