Plays I Like - WeezyBengal - 09-12-2023 The play below just killed me. Chase lined up in the backfield...of course he's getting the ball. What kind of big brained idea was this? My only thought here is maybe ZT is playing chess not checkers. Look for this same play against the Browns next time we play them. I'd run the same exact play, but have Mixon go on the backside running opposite of Chase and give Mixon the ball. Complete misdirection and that backside should be wide ass open. RE: This play... - TheLeonardLeap - 09-12-2023 Chase has 13 career rushes for 31 yards (2.4 YPC) and 0 TDs (2 first downs). 7 of the 13 carries have gone for 0 or negative yards. I don't know if it's Zac's design, the offense's execution, or Chase just isn't good at it, but it doesn't work and this is the third year of trying it. It has basically never worked. It's largely just giving away downs and putting the offense in a worse position. It is a worse play than just immediately throwing the ball out to Chase behind the LoS and hoping he makes his CB miss. I wish they would stop it. I think that it's just a dead give away that when Chase is in the backfield what is about to happen. Creativity would have been faking the jet toss to Chase, and then handing it to Evans on the counter. Or, since he's back there anyway, have him do his best Mohamed Sanu impersonation. 70 yard TD, baby! Possible, but do you think that he's fast enough to get under it before it hits the ground? ![]() RE: This play... - Awful Llama - 09-12-2023 (09-12-2023, 02:19 PM)SunsetBengal Wrote: Possible, but do you think that he's fast enough to get under it before it hits the ground? Of course. His philosophy about himself is just like Burrow's: Meh, I just throw it up, I know I'm out there somewhere. RE: This play... - PhilHos - 09-12-2023 For whatever reason I can't reply to the original post, but Zac did do a thing like Weezy suggested against KC where he ran a play or something earlier, then ran a similar play but the 2nd time it went to a wide open Chase TD. Zac. lol his play design is just not good. Never has been. RE: This play... - 007BengalsFan - 09-12-2023 (09-12-2023, 02:36 PM)740Bengal Wrote: Zac. lol his play design is just not good. Never has been. He is just not a very good X's and O's coach. He gets by having an offense with an overabundance of talent and a defense led by Anarumo that keeps the team in every game. Taylor's actual coaching/playcalling on offense is crap. The Bengals need a real O.C. that knows how to design an offensive system with the talent we have and to be able to call the plays. No more Taylor thinking he is an offensive guru. He needs to be the head coach not the co-offensive coordinator. He needs to be the head coach not the co-offensive coordinator. Him, Burrow, and Callahan all designed this offense together. IMO the problem is the depth of the playbook. A lot of the concepts and stuff they run seems basic and not very ingenious. I look at teams like Miami and KC and the stuff they run and compare it to our offense...and it just seems a lot "easier" on the QB. WRs running open down the field, more pre snap motion, misdirection, better screen game, etc. Our offense moved the ball last year, but if they're bread and butter isn't working (F it Tee or Jamar is down there somewhere) they just get completely stuck in the mood. RE: This play... - Truck_1_0_1_ - 09-12-2023 I would like to note that Chase was in motion, thus he technically wasn't, "in the backfield." If we are going to use this play, then there were at least 2 (maybe 3) other plays where Chase did the exact same thing and we did NOT toss it to him for a run. So if by showing this look, they only ran once of 3 or 4 times, that's not a bad thing. If this was executed correctly, then this thread doesn't exist, but I do agree with TLL that maybe they should stop trying to run the ball with Chase lol RE: This play... - PhilHos - 09-12-2023 (09-12-2023, 03:21 PM)WeezyBengal Wrote: Him, Burrow, and Callahan all designed this offense together. I just wonder if the issue isn't so much the depth of the playbook but having the wrong one. I get the feeling that Zac wants to do more but it requires a much better offensive line than what we have and so, he ends up just sticking to the basics because that's all that can work with the group we have. A better OC would match the playbook to the talent he has and then adjust it as necessary due to injuries or weaknesses. I think this is the core of the issue with Zac as a playcaller. Given top talent, his playbook is probably good and he can call plays decently enough. But, then we have issues like injuries and incompetence along the OL and then Zac's only adjustment is shrinking the playbook and not changing it to fit what he has on offense. Zac is clearly a good, if not great HC. But, he's still an average OC, at best. At this point, maybe we hope someone offers Callahan a HC job this offseason and Zac takes the opportunity to turn over all playcalling duties and just focus on being HC. I REALLY liked it on that 4th down against the Raiders in the playoffs. Not so much since, lol. Another issue is that Burrow REALLY doesn't want to play from under center. This has been known by Burrow and ZT. That REALLY limits what you can do as far as play action goes and the different stuff you run. They tried a weird hybrid with under center and shotgun last year and it just didn't work. It got to the point that every time Burrow was under center everyone in the stadium knew they were going to run the ball. RE: This play... - Go Cards - 09-12-2023 It doesn't work well because of how great #1 is, Chase just simply draws too much attention to fool opposing defenses in this way. He is never not going be accounted for on any play pre-snap imho. Although Truck is right, and it could just be the Bengals setting something else up out of the same formation. I'm not sure Zac would change even if we hired Andy Reid as OC. Anarumo isn’t immune to boneheaded play calls either. In the first half they had the Browns in a 3rd and 10 and he inexplicably dropped the DEs in coverage and they picked up the first down easily in the area behind Hendrickson. All coaches make head scratching decisions, some more than others. That defensive one you're talking about was particularly head scratching....and the JaMarr pitch, of course. RE: This play... - Mgbrown66 - 09-12-2023 They had an entire offseason to mix up something in the lab - and this was all they had? RE: This play... - bfine32 - 09-12-2023 I remember the year Chase was coming out; I was a fan of the Slim Reaper. Seems one of the things I was able to bring up in Slim's favor was how he did on plays from the LOS (screens/sweeps). I think Ja'Marr needs to be in space. |
