The defensive philosophy needs a serious make over immediately - Tlawsonmariat82 - 09-29-2024

The rush 4 coverage philosophy needs to go ASAP it's not working and we're not good at it at all..we to start sending pressure on early downs and start showing some pressure and dropping in coverage..Lou is so vanilla and so basic right now that I don't know if I can take it any longer, this truly has to stop..

Lou is not being basic, but he isn’t sending pressure very often. The Bengals don’t really have anyone that can win 1-on-1 matchups outside of Trey. It’s arguably not worth bringing a body out of coverage just to get isolated looks because those guys aren’t going to win. It’s a talent issue. The defensive line is absolutely wrecked with injury and now may be missing Trey if this stinger ends up being serious.

Ossai supposedly had a pretty good game today.

Baltimore is bringing pressure against josh Allen that's confusing the hell out of the bills protection this is the stuff I wish lou would do..

Lou needs to change some schemes or this D is gonna continue to flop.

So you want to put these CBs in single coverage more often?

We need to get healthy and the front office needs to make some trades to sure up this defense.

Logan Wilson is a very effective blitzer, the problem is that they can't afford to not have him in coverage.

you don't have to compromise coverage to bring pressure, use some zone blitz concepts or simulated pressures something to change it up because what we're currently doing  is not effective at all..

You know what, usually no but we were actually talking about it during the game yesterday.  Right now they are giving up big plays because there is absolutely no pressure to even hurry the QB.  Not too mention death by 100 cuts from long drives.

If you look at the 2nd to last drive yesterday the Bengals finally started to bring pressure and Dalton was hurried and almost threw a pick to Pratt.  I'd rather have that and give up a big play now and then rather than to sit back and get picked apart.  At least we'd be able to get our offense back on the field.  These long drives eat up the clock and that puts even more pressure on the offense as possessions are more limited.

Collingsworth also discussed how they do a good job drafting personnel to fit their scheme. He mentioned how they draft players for the DB room that can essentially cover, tackle, blitz, etc. as a CB or Safety.

Baltimore actually struggles against the pass just like we do the only difference is they're not scared to at least try to come after the passer this lack of aggression is senseless to say the least..it's time to start being aggressive on defense..

I think if we blitzed Mahomes on that 4th and 16, we would have won. But we don't play Patrick like that.

At least Burrow has the message, score a TD every drive now - or else. Easy directive. Don't depend on the D anymore.

You mention the good but not the bad. The 3rd down conversion slant was because the Bengals brought Wilson on a blitz vacating the inside zone. The deep throws were a result of having to go heavy in the box creating 1 on 1s on the outside against cover 1 man. Andy never was afraid to put up 50/50 balls.

We weren't last year and we were still only 18th in sacks despite Hendrickson having 17.5 on his own.

If your plan requires everyone to just out-talent their opponents in 1-on-1 matchups in order to win, then it's a bad plan. You should be creating mismatches and opportunities so you don't have to win fair 1-on-1s every time.

Oh for sure, Cincinnati has a talent issue on the line. The injuries are just making it worse this season. The most common usage of a blitz is to simply get 1-on-1 looks in the pass rush. The Bengals don't have anyone outside of Trey that can win those with any consistency and I'd like to think they know this. Lou likes to run simulated pressures by sending a DB and dropping a DL which can be helpful but there's only so much "scheming" that can be done on defense to mask subpar talent. These guys are stunting, there's been some overloads, so he is doing what he can but the guys simply aren't winning. It's common for a defense to be running man on the backend of a blitz, so you're really opening yourself up to get bit if you don't have guys that can win unless you have dudes at DB.

This doesn't relate to blitzes necessarily but I just don't think this defense is very good. The DL is really hurting for talent, LBers are good and I am bullish on the young corners. The safety play has been subpar and I'm not optimistic it will improve much.

RE: The defensive philosophy needs a serious make over immediately - WeezyBengal - 09-30-2024

Not sure what you guys want Lou to do.

If you blitz you expose yourself in the run, that's going to kill us when we don't have any DTs that are stout against the run and can shut it down before it gets to the second level. You really want to blitz a linebacker or safety when you know like 75% of runs are going to hit the second level? Good luck with that - Derrick Henry 75 yard TD runs on deck.

All of this defenses problems start with the trenches. No pass rush, no run stopping. Seems like the front office just recently realized the value of the trenches on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully this year makes them realize the value of the trenches on the defensive side of the ball.

RE: The defensive philosophy needs a serious make over immediately - reuben.ahmed - 09-30-2024

The defense is very poor in tackling and their angles of attack and being out of position seem haphazard. Who takes responsibility for this stuff?

RE: The defensive philosophy needs a serious make over immediately - Synric - 09-30-2024

Zach Carter has the most DT snaps this year too....
