One guy fixes this defense - Jpoore - 10-30-2024
Maxx Crosby-yes he’ll take a 1st plus, but it makes stupid sense. Hendrickson is 29 will be 30 when season ends will be 31 when contract is up next offseason. Max crosby just turned 27 and is under contract for 2 more years after this season. Our line misses another impact guy. Yes raiders have to be willing to deal him but I would trade a first this draft, 2nd next and Myles Murphy and wouldn’t think twice.

I'm hoping the Raiders just leave Dylan Parham in Cincy. He still has a year and a half left on his rookie deal.

IDK if one guy can fix the defense but one guy can make this defense not complete crap. That guy is NT Dextar Lawrence from the Giants. Wether he is available or not is another story.
I agree with SunsetBengal though the player has to be an interior player.

The interior, while not great, has been a lot better since our dts came back. Our client in general get 0 pressure but especially when Hendrickson is out.

Absolutely. Because teams HAVE to slide the Center to Dexter Lawrence instantly creating 1 on 1s for a DC to scheme up whatever pressure he wants on the opposite side... Not to mention Dex is a game wrecker by himself.

All this talk about what's needed is for not, Dehner said Bengals will not be active at the trade deadline!
As Dehner writes, the Bengals front office doesn’t have any intention of “waving the white flag,” but they also don’t intend to give up draft assets that may help them in the future. The organization believes there’s still a path to the playoffs with their current roster, and they’ll rely on their young pieces to patch any weaknesses.
Tobin and his "draft assets" that makes me feel better about the future!

Just go look at the bears last year. This was after the season.
The Bears defense has improved dramatically with Sweat's addition. They went from 28th to 20th in points allowed, 23rd to 12th in yards allowed and from 22nd to third in takeaways, per the Chicago Sun-Times. The Bears were 2-6 without Sweat, and they're 5-3 with him.
Outside of Sweat's individual production -- which includes a career-high 12.5 sacks, leading both the Bears (6.0) and Commanders (6.5), 13 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four pass breakups and 25 QB hits this season -- his presence has opened up opportunities for those around him.
Guys like defensive tackle Justin Jones, rookie defensive tackle Gervon Dexter and defensive end DeMarcus Walker have benefited from Sweat's addition, which has reinvigorated the defense.
"Just a big contributing factor," said cornerback Jaylon Johnson. "Him just coming in, bringing a different energy. Kind of indescribable. We didn’t necessarily know that we needed it until he came, and it’s like, 'Yeah, this is somebody that we needed.'"
That said, I don’t think the bengals make a change.

Go look at the ravens 2022.
Prior to the trade, the Ravens’ defense had allowed 22.9 points per game, 364.3 total yards per game, 4.4 yards per carry, and a 61.3 percent red zone touchdown rate.
After acquiring Smith, the Ravens’ defense allowed 14.7 points per game (second-best in the NFL), 288.8 total yards per game (third-best in the NFL), 3.5 yards per carry, and a 28.0 percent red zone touchdown rate.

Interior pressure would better affect the overall pass rush, IMO.
Right now, there's basically none, really affecting the success rate that the DEs are having.
Besides, Bengals won't bench Hubbard.
Is there an IDL pass rusher that is on the market?
If just looking for this year, Calais Campbell probably would come cheap.
Dexter Lawrence is my preferred IDL though, but I'd like him to get signed long-term.
Giants would command a hefty price tag for him.

One guy won’t fix a thing. And with our luck, he’d blow out a ligament his first play from scrimmage.
I’m all for trading picks for players who can make the team better now, because this group is horrible at drafting.
But Maxx Crosby is no magic elixir. Needs to be rebuilt almost entirely.

We get absolutely no push from the interior. The are OK against the run, zero pass rush.

Sweat coming to the Bears was the final piece to their already strong supporting cast on the DL. The Bengals, on the other hand, already have an elite pass rushing DE in Trey Hendrickson. What they are lacking is that supporting cast, after BJ Hill the rest of the DL production looks pretty bleak. It's going to take some development from our rookies on the interior, they need a veteran NT to bridge the gap. At the other DE spot, Hubbard isn't what he used to be and Myles Murphy lost a lot of mobility when he added that body mass. I was looking for Cam Sample to take a big step forward, before the Achilles tear, now he'll be a UFA coming off of a debilitating injury and rehab. The Bengals should strongly consider looking for a younger established veteran DE to stuff the run and add some sack production to what Hendrickson does.

Roquan Smith is that leader that the Ravens had been needing, no doubt. Would I trade Pratt for a monster presence and personality similar to Smith? You betcha! However, what would be equally impactful and likely a little cheaper in the long run would be to spend the money and bring in a top tier Safey. With adequate DL and Safety play, Wison and Pratt are more than adequate and sometimes even excel at their positions. I'd have no issues with the Bengals riding with Wilson and Pratt for moderate 3rd contracts, so long as they plug the money saved into NT and Safety.

I disagree with those who say Lawrence would not help our defense a ton. He is a great pass rusher and also very good against the run. In my opinion, an interior consistent pass rush is more valuable than an outside pass rush.
Sadly, as I mentioned in another thread, our FO will not even try to fix our weaknesses like other teams do in mid-season.
