cap situation! - Tlawsonmariat82 - 11-19-2024

Just looking at the bengals cap situation and 4 players that we're getting zero from are taking up over 43m in cap space..Sheldon Rankins 12.75m,same Hubbard 11.82m,Alex cappa 10.5m and geno stone 7.9m I can think of a whole lot to with that money to fix this team..

RE: cap situation! - THE PISTONS - 11-19-2024

Yep. Cut them.

But, don't forget that Geno Stone was Nick Scott's replacement who was Jesse Bates replacement.

So not a guarantee that we get better. They go for who they think is value.

Agree plus if you cut Hubbard Murphy would have to start you can’t have a 1st rd. pick not starting in year 3. I don’t even care if Murphy is good rather give him opportunities vs. an expensive player on the decline. Cut Rankins I’d rather start Jenkins and maybe resign Hill. Stone is ranked as one of the worst safeties in the NFL so if you cut him you can’t get any worse, I’d rather lose with young guys vs. a struggling expensive vet with 1 year left.

Its just gonna be more discount guards and safeties

RE: cap situation! - Synric - 11-19-2024

Salary cap is rarely the issue.

The issue is it will be close to 40m to 50m in signing bonuses between Ja'Marr and Hendrickson and fully guaranteeing AT LEAST Chase's first couple years regular salary. So getting close to 60m to 70m in just 2024 for just those two guys. I don't think they will be big spenders in FA because of those two deals (and Tee 2026 comp pick) hopefully they can find some middle of the pack contributors like they did with guys like Chido, Larry O and Vonn Bell.

And there is nothing wrong with having a few mid tier guys in starting roles. It sure as heck beats have just a few stars and supporting cast of rookies and scrubs.

They will probably be looking at B tier guys that can't demand a ton of guaranteed money.  So, say, Trey Smith is likely out, but James Daniels, Tevon Jenkins, and Evan Brown are probably in play.

This is honestly the good news. That much money tied into terrible players can be used elsewhere and the odds of the players replacing
them being worse is very low.

That all depends on how much dead money there is if they're cut. MB doesn't like to pay for nothing. He'd rather get something out of his money, even if it does result in a 4-7 record currently.

RE: cap situation! - Bengalfan4life27c - 11-19-2024

we need a DT DE2,3 CB1 FS SS RG LG WR 2. It's fixable we need quality I would also seriously consider bringing in competition for K

It looks like according to Over the Cap if all the players mentioned in the OP (Rankins, Hubbard, Cappa and Stone) were cut pre June 1st it would be $7.75 million in dead cap space while making $33.57 million in cap savings.  Of course if they cut any or all 4 of those players they will be tasked with signing their replacements so that will obviously cut into the cap savings.

I will 10000% know how serious this organization is about winning simply by the cuts (or lack there-of) they make this off-season.

I don't trust the Bengals to properly identify and sign actual upgrades in FA.

We've seen how they tried to address the departures of Bates, Reader, and Mixon.
We got Scott, Stone, Rankins, and Moss.

Last year I said if the Bengals want to sign a big ticket outside Free Agent that was. Christian Wilkins. This year that player is Trey Smith but I'm with you it's unlikely.

I am on the James Daniels bandwagon have been since since his draft class and then again before he signed eitn the Steelers. I know hiw Achilles makes signing him difficult but this really isn't a good Offensive Line FA class they have warts like this. They could take a shot at a guy in the corner class like DJ Reed, Chavarious Ward, Asante Samuel Jr.

Edit: Kristian Fulton is a name to watch too. I think they made a run at him last off-season but don't quote me 100% on that.

Double Edit: Milton Williams is intriguing because he is a rotational IDL only but he's one of the more dangerous interior rushers in thr NFL.

Agree but what can we trust them at? Haven't exactly been killing it in the draft.

Nope.

So basically can't trust them. Period.
