Changing of the guard? - WeezyBengal - 11-29-2024

Cody Ford has been getting snaps at guard in practice this week. There is a lot of speculation that he's going to take over for either Cappa or Volson. I think the majority of his snaps have come at left guard, so most likely Volson.

I'm all for using the rest of the season to evaluate players and find solutions for current holes on this roster.

It seems like Ford was one of those guys that wanted to be a tackle more than he wanted to be a guard.  My guess is he'd play anywhere he'd have a shot at a starting job at this point in his career.

FWIW, he's not been a disaster at LT.  Not a guy I'd want out there every week, but not a disaster.

I am all for trying out everyone to take the place of the Bengals IOL bums.

They looked great when they came in because the Bengals had garbage in there before.

Upgrading the interior o-line will make Burrow look even better, extend his career, and improve the running game. I have long been an advocate of burning multiple picks to improve the trenches, but so have others, and it never gets done. Joe does not need more weapons, he needs more time in the pocket and he could make John Ross look like a reasonable wide out.

Mahomes couldn’t make John Ross look reasonable.

The catch 22 to the bengals investing into an elite IOL prospect is they just won’t pay them. I think this is part of why they invest in more “premium” positions in round 1 especially. If they hit, they can justify paying them.

While were at it kick Karras to RG and put Matt Lee in at center. Both of our guards have been flat out terrible and deserve to lose their starting jobs.

RE: Changing of the guard? - GodFather - 12-01-2024

The only thing that will be changed is Mike Brown's diapers.

If Karras gets moved to guard, he'd be LG. It's where he's been graded best at in his career and was where he played his last year in New England before we signed him and moved him back to C.

aside from thoughts that you may be thinking..there is absolutely no thoughts or conversations taking place that Cody Ford will be a starter on this club..in any position

So Ford has been getting actual snaps in practice this week at the Guard position. Good for the team acknowledging that they need to try something, anything to improve what's been going on with the interior OL.

Then we have this "insider" who wants to pour cold water on any notion that any sort of change might be in the works based on no public statements to support what's been actually happening. All I can say is that actions speak louder. If the guy has been taking practice reps at Guard, that tells me they are considering playing him at Guard.

We have not sogned a CB we drafted to a 2nd contract in a LOOONG time. Hall or Kirkpatrick, methinks.

Not according to Paul Dehner this morning.....Volson is out, Ford is in.

Your false, yet so condescending, denouncement of fellow members is more annoying than the Bengals awful defense.  Seriously, you are proven wrong time and time again. You have zero credibility, Im starting to wonder if you are a Browns fan.

Ford may not have played a perfect, or even a particularly good game, but at least the coaching staff tried something to fix a problem.

RE: Changing of the guard? - ochocincos - 12-02-2024

I did not think Ford did well at all, but PFF seemed to think differently.

They gave him a 76.0 pass blocking score with only 1 sack allowed, which was his only pressure allowed.
I saw what looked to be multiple pressures allowed, but they must have credited maybe to Karras or OBJ because they were on stunts.

Here were the pressures allowed (sacks allowed) by each OL according to PFF:
OBJ - 5 (1)
Ford - 1 (1)
Karras - 1 (0)
Cappa - 2 (0)
Mims - 1 (0)

Burrow was sacked 4 times though in the game, yet PFF only put 2 of those on the OL.

Exactly. Time to evaluate guys and see where everyone fits in next year.

You gotta remember that this was his first game at guard as well and he was playing a really good front.

I'm not making excuses but in no way am I giving up on the Cody Ford experiement yet. I'd use the rest of the season to evaluate him at guard.
