Garrett Crochet and what it may mean - samhain - 12-04-2024
Lots of rumors flying around linking the Reds (and Cubs, tbs) to White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. He's 25 and looks like a bona fide stud, plus he's already had the obligatory first TJ surgery. He and Greene would give the Reds two legit hammers at the top of the rotation. That plus the depth, even into the minors would be pretty impressive.
The team is also allegedly exploring the outfield market, but the only name I've heard specifically is Jesse Winker, which is meh. Maybe a deal for Crochet would make a current pitcher expendable in a trade package for an outfielder.

Under 150 innings of over 3.50 ERA baseball isn't really an "ace", "stud", or "legit hammer".
He had a 115 ERA+.
Andrew Abbott had a 118 ERA+.
So he was slightly worse than Abbott and last year was the first time he has thrown >65 innings since High School.
After the All-Star break he had 12 starts for 38.2 innings and a 5.12 ERA while allowing 1.9 HR/9.

I would trade for Garrett Crochet under one circumstance:
If we trade one of our younger unknown pitchers for a legitimate outfield bat.
For example, if we swung a 3 way trade like this, I would be all for it:
Reds receive:
Garrett Crochet from White Sox
Brent Rooker from Athletics
White Sox receive:
Cam Collier from Reds
An additional top 10 to 30 prospect from the Reds
Athletics receive:
Nick Lodolo from the Reds
A lottery ticket prospect from Reds
That would mean the Reds would receive 2 to 3 years of:
1. A starting, power outfielder bat who is on the older side, and
2. A starter with great stuff, but decently high risk in that he hasn't done it for very long after being a reliever and injured for most of his career.
It would cost them:
1. A young but promising infield bat in Cam Collier.
2. A promising young starter who has shown dominant swing and miss stuff in Nick Lodolo, who has struggled with injuries in his career and may have to change his pitching repertoire to eliminate the blister issue he's encountered recently.
3. 2 mid to low tier prospects, the higher of which would probably recent a draft pick like Mike Sirota, Luke Holman, or Ty Floyd.
Alternatively, you could cut the Athletics out of the deal and trade for both Crochet and Robert Jr from the White Sox.
Robert struggled last season, but he still posted a positive WAR and has good career numbers and, perhaps just as importantly, is 3 years younger than Rooker.

Lodolo is heading into his age 27 season, so not young, with a career 4.52 ERA, 1.292 WHIP, and 98 ERA+, and is coming off a season ending injury (again).
The Athletics aren't going to give up Rooker for him and a lottery ticket prospect.
You'd have to think more Rhett Lowder.

I'd hang up the phone if the Athletics required Lowder for Rooker haha. I think Rooker's value is a bit inflated at the moment. He turned 30 this year and has had just 1 exceptional season under his belt. He's a lot like Crochet in that regard.
But yea, Lodolo is rough. Maybe they'd have to pair him with a higher upside prospect like Tyson Lewis or Chase Petty to get the deal done.
My point is, I'm only interested in trading for Crochet if we convert one of Lodolo or Abbott into an impact bat.

I doubt they are even interested in Crochet. These rumors started with someone saying the Reds were one of the 2 most viable options to deal for him because of the prospects they could offer. Crochet also comes with a lot of question marks and it didn't help his image when his reps said he wouldn't pitch in the playoffs last year for any team that traded for him, unless he got an extension first...a pretty knucklehead move, IMO.
The Reds have enough potential staters right now. Priority #1 is a power hitting OF. Krall said they are ready to make a move, so hopefully they go hard after someone who make an impact, whether it's a FA signing or a trade.
As far as trading for Rooker, the A's GM said he isn't going to be dealt. They just signed Luis Severino to a 67m deal. Sounds like they're going to go into the season trying to at least be competitive in the West.

I've never understood why Locked On Reds had so much love for Rooker and constantly pushed for the Reds to trade for him. Most of their ideas and theories are kind of out there, but they provide a lot of content for a below .500 team so I mostly give them a pass.
I'm not saying that Singer is good enough to compare to Crochet, but I think that he has already filled out what they were looking for during this off season, depth at the starters position. They didn't need much of an improvement because the starting staff is very talented, just still a bit too young.
One rare idea of the guys on Locked On Reds that I really liked was the thought of possibly moving Lodolo to the bullpen if his blister issue comes back. Less pitches means less friction on the fingers. He could be lights out for two innings every other day or so.

I love listening to Locked on Reds. it gets me out of the death spiral political influencers that's I've been on for months. Still, they really raise some odd expectations. Those guys should know better TBH.

I tried the chatterbox sports channel for a short while before the 2023 season. I only liked the somewhat bigger, nerdy guy that seemed to run the technical side of things. After a few episodes, I was already tired of the arrogance from one of the regular guys as they are all a bit young. Add that to when they posted spoilers for games in their titles, I put them on my "Don't Recommend Channel" list on YouTube. 7:30 EST games are at 3:30 for me in Alaska so I don't always get a chance to see every game live. LOR will occasionally post spoilers in the titles, but nowhere near as much as the chatterbox crew.
Anybody have any other podcast suggestions? Most of the time that I listen to them is when I just have it playing in the background while doing something else.

Yeah, they loved them some Rooker for sure. They're all in on Santander and Hernandez as free agents, and I wouldn't mind either guy...but I doubt the Reds will be able to compete in that market. Once Soto signs, those guys are going to demand some pretty good money. Just saw that O'Neill signed with the O's, so that's another guy off the market, although he was down the list of options for me.
The one guy I keep coming back to as a possibility is Luis Robert, Jr. I know he has the injury history and struggled with the bat last year, but I also know that he's a solid defensive outfielder, who's under contract and has the potential to hit for both power and a decent average when he's healthy and on his game. There's risk involved for sure, but at 27, I think it's a risk worth taking if the asking price in prospects is reasonable (which is a big 'if' with Getz). I feel like getting out of that mess in Chicago could do wonders for him.
You mentioned the bullpen...a guy I think could excel there is Ashcraft, with his stuff and aggressiveness. To me, he was made for the pen.

They will really have to break character to get Santander or Teo.
