RIP Bill Bergey - Isaac Curtis: The Real #85 - 12-26-2024

Former Bengal 1969 draftee and Pro-Bowler & HOF LB Bill Bergey passed today, after a battle with cancer. He was 79.

Although the he was traded to the Eagles in 1974, and shined more brightly there (4 pro bowls, 2 all-pro teams), I still consider him a Bengal great in many ways, even though he went in as more an Eagle.

RIP Bill.

RE: RIP Bill Bergey - Forever Spinning Vinyl - 12-26-2024

My late Step-Dad stopped following the Bengals when they traded Bergey away. He hated Paul Brown after that. He'd watch games with me when they were on TV, but he never really knew any of the players names other than the stars. He'd just say stuff like "That #82 is pretty good. (Rodney Holman) They should throw it to him more often."

Watching Bergey play so awesome with the Eagles, I understood his anger as the years went by because LB is by far and away the Bengals al-time weakest position group. He's still in my all-time Bengals team as a starter. The weakness at the position over the years is also why I'm so bummed about Odell Thurman throwing his career away for drugs. It was not difficult to see that he had that "IT" factor.

My all-time starters
Jim LeClair
Bill Bergey
Vontaze Burfict

Rest In Peace Bill.

It's always sad to hear when a former Bengal passes away. Rest in peace, Mr. Bergey.

Great post.

No doubt about LB being the weakest spot all-time. I'd throw Reggie Williams in there, but he is OLB not ILB.

i'd have Bergey on my all-time Bengals squad as well.

That's my fault. I misread the obit. I though he was in. I think it is an Eagles HOF thing. I read Eagles HOFer in an obit and thought the main Hall. But it is Eagle specific.
