pass rush has improved since Hubbard injury - Bengalfan4life27c - 12-29-2024
Was this a front office thing or a Lou thing Hubbard is clearly washed.

?? 2 sacks yesterday, Nix had time most of game, Cleveland QB was horrible, very small window to evaluate olus hubbard had reduced snaps and was playing hurt, now with that said, i would not resign sam , gut is he might retire... we need to look FA for a pass rusher and dt plus early in draft

Ossai has been a marked improvement over Hubbard.
Joseph Ossai with a career-high 6 tackles today, a half sack, a pass defense, a forced fumble and INT-causing pressure.

No it's not.
Hubbard had one of the worst pass rush win rates in the NFL before he got injured. He was also one of the slowest/least reactive guys on the field each week.
Ossai/Murphy has been a CLEAR upgrade.

While Ossai won't get a large contract his agent might not want to negotiate in good faith with the Bengals.

Why used terms like "Clearly washed" when it is general knowledge that Hubbard has played the entire season needing surgery. It comes off as disrespectful. And the way Lou's defense used him, he was the anvil to Hendrickson's hammer. He might be coming to the end of his career, or he might have surgery and return to being what he once was.

This is goning to be a critical offseason! They're going to have to make some tough decisions. They're going to have to cut some players that are not part of the solution. And Hubbard is one that needs to go.

You can be washed because of injuries. We saw it with AJ Geeen towards the end of his career. And he was a far greater Bengal than Hubbard. It wasn’t “disrespectful” to call it for what it was. Hubbard has been bad for 2 years in a row now. It’s time to move on.

It still wasn't very good yesterday though.
On the moonball to Mims (not the 4th and 1, the other one), we may as well have not had a pass rush.
They definitely need to add at least one premier pass rusher this off season. Trey is elite, but he also runs hot and cold. They need someone from the right side of the defense that can consistently generate pressure on the QB.

One could argue he's been playing hurt for 2 years now. I don't like the term washed. Despite the injuries and horrific pass rush grade, he is still a good run defender and grades out higher than Ossai or Murphy on the season.
That said, I don't think he is worth $11 mil anymore. To save money, I'd still cut Cappa, Rankins, and probably Moss first. Hubbard and Stone round out the top 5.
But I am not cutting anyone reflexively. I want a FA/draft replacement in hand first.

There's no reason to cut Zach Moss. Teams need at least 3 running backs even ones that average 35+ passing attempts a game. Sheldon Rankins definitely needs cut but really cap space is not an issue even adding the Ja'Marr Chase contract because he's already in the books for 22m in 2025.

Second contract. He won't be looking for a "cheap" deal. Team that offers the most money will get him. It won't be Cincinnati!

I'm hoping Hubbard knows he's done and retires... I know it's all semantics but really hate for the Bengals to cut him.
Although knowing the Bengals they will bring him back a fan favorite.

The question with Hubbard is if he is "washed" temporarily because of the hamstring and knee injuries or if he is permenanly diminished. We won't know that until next year. They aren't going to cut Sam. Restructure his contract, absolutely, I see that happeneing, but they aren't going to waive him before he gets another traaning camp.
These young guys are finally figuring it out.
It has been a weird year for the injury impact on defense. It certainly hindered the development of these young players early in the season. And totally slowed down the ease of communication and chemistry among the defense as a whole
