Are you ready to count the 17th game?

I personally am happy Burrow and Chase broke theirs in the traditional 16….

Am I old?

RE: Records - Mer - 12-29-2024

Think about how the 14 game record holders felt when they added 2 games.
Personally that 17th game gives us one more regular season game and one less preseason game. Win-win in my mind.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of the "Roger Maris*" approach to records. Some records were achieved in 14 game seasons, while other were from 16 games, and now some will be for 17 games. When they inevitably get to 18 game seasons the record books will be re-written once again. Que sera sera.

If you go back far enough, there is fewer than 14. That is pre-Bengals, however.

17 games in 18 weeks: 2021-
16 games in 17 weeks: 1990-2020 (18 in 1993 & 2002)
16 games in 16 weeks: 1978-1989 (absent strikes)
14 games: 1961-1977
12 games: 1947-1960
11 games: 1946
10 games: 1943-1945
11 games: 1937-1942
12 games: 1935-1936

In terms of the records, most is most. But I think I'd rather look at yards per game (scheduled) to determine the best season, not total yards.

Hell, given the rule changes over the years, I'm not sure that does it. I think you need something like Adjusted ERA for the passing/receiving stats. The raw numbers are so out of whack with historical norms. Show me where you are relative to league average. Like when Ruth was hitting more HRs than entire TEAMS. That is more impressive than the raw numbers.

Until they inevitably go to 18 games, add in another bye week, and guys probably start taking weeks off as a form of load management.

I still think 17 is the perfect number if they're insistent on playing international games. 8 home, 8 away, 1 international for everyone. I like that there's no 8-8 seasons anymore, but the whole 8 home and 9 away or 9 home and 8 away is dumb.

RE: Records - bfine32 - 12-30-2024

Perhaps they should change yearly records from total to stats by game for the season.

For instance, Eric Dickerson rushed for 2105 in a 16-game season, Jim Brown ran for 1863 in a 14-game season.

Brown should have the single-season record because he averaged 133.1/Game and Eric averaged 131.6

Total must always be averaged based on games/season not games player played that season

OJ Simpson ran for 2003 in a 14-game season, but I get your point.

Agreed, WTS the eras matter also.

Records were made to be broken.
