Dolphins/Bengals - Bengalbug - 12-30-2024

How is it that the dolphins are currently seeded higher and own the tie breaker for playoff purposes, yet the dolphins are currently looking at a higher draft pick? If the season ended today, dolphins are 8th and Bengals 9th for playoffs.

On the flip side, the dolphins would pick 15, while the bengals would pick 16.

Shouldn’t those two things be synonymous? I know it doesn’t matter, in the grand scheme of things, but it’s odd.

Hmmm...Good question. I could speculate, but I really don't know.

Yea, I don’t really care about the draft thing, or the current seeding. I’ve just been curious about this for a few weeks now.

The Dolphins have the playoffs tiebreaker due to having a better conference record. That doesn't play into draft order, where Strength of Schedule is the main tiebreaker.

When it comes to playoff seeding, conference record.
MIA is 6-5 against the AFC.
CIN is 5-6 against the AFC.

When it comes to draft order...
Quote:In situations where teams finished the previous season with identical records, the determination of draft position is decided by strength of schedule — the aggregate winning percentage of a team’s opponents. The team that played the schedule with the lowest winning percentage will be awarded the higher pick.

So MIA currently has higher draft positioning due to weaker strength of schedule.

Thanks for the explanation. You would think they would use the same tie breakers.
