Cody Ford - Speedy Thomas - 01-05-2025

Pally put this in the game ball thread, but I think what Cody Ford did last night deserves special recognition. While Trey was terrorizing Wilson, the great TWATT was totally neutralized by Ford. And I mean neutralized, like did absolutely nothing. Zero sacks, zero tackles, zero QB hits, zero passes defensed. In 120 career games, this was the first time he was shut out.

To put it in perspective, my 77 year old ass watching on a recliner had as big an impact on the game as their all-world edge rusher.

RE: Cody Ford - KillerGoose - 01-05-2025

Ford did well, but he also wasn’t on an island often with Watt. And he did get whipped a few times. The Bengals gave him plenty of help. Still, given their pedigrees, he deserves credit.

RE: Cody Ford - jj22 - 01-05-2025

And he did it on one leg, one arm, and one back by the end of the game. He got help but they have worked well to protect him and he’s played to his potential this season. For good or for bad however people judge his season and play. This season play was probably the best any team would get from him at either tackle spot.

In a dream world, I'd take Cody as our #6 O-lineman. In an "I'll take it world" he's our RG

RE: Cody Ford - 007BengalsFan - 01-05-2025

Lets not rewrite what happend last night. Ford did allow Burrow to get hit and pressured plus he did have help at times. I will give him credit though, he played better at tackle than Volson did at guard

RE: Cody Ford - ochocincos - 01-05-2025

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bengals chose to bring back Ford, and I could be ok with him being brought back strictly as a backup.
He is extremely versatile.
Although, I wouldn't personally slot him into any starting role unless the only other option would be Volson or Cappa.

If looking at his pressures allowed, PFF has Ford at 5 sacks and 34 total pressures allowed on 419 pass block reps (@PIT game hasn't been added yet).
Volson meanwhile was tagged by PFF allowing 5 sacks and 39 total pressures on 610 pass block reps (@PIT game has not been added yet).

That PIT game though Volson was getting bulldozed frequently, allowing at least one sack and multiple pressures, so yea I'd at least take Ford over that turnstile.

He was helped but he’s been a huge bright spot. A warrior.

You just described every lineman last night. Burrow didn't help tho, he was holding the ball awhile on some of those sacks and hits.

Cody Ford is this year's Eli Apple w/o the mouth.

Every right tackle in the league gets help with Twatt.

Anyone else see a replay of Ford blocking an inside defender and the guy kind of piled on his ankle after the play? Ford just gave the guy a death stare.

RE: Cody Ford - Isaac Curtis: The Real #85 - 01-05-2025

Ford's ability to play everywhere along the line except for center, at a mediocre level is, believe it or not, valuable.

And his attitude is laudable.

He is a FA and worth keeping at a low/vet min type number. Certainly, he is better than Volson and more versatile.

At the same time, I'm not sure I'd want him as OT3 or my first G off the bench. But he is a wonderful guy to have active on game day due to his versatility. But he is like the 7th/8th/9th/10th OL for me.

But I would like him back:

LT: O. Brown Jr (signed)
LG: open: FA or high pick
C: Karras
RG: open (FA, cut Cappa)
RT: Mims
------------
OT3: I'd love T. Brown back if cheap.
OG3/OT4: Ford
C2: Lee
-----------

The rest can be Cochran, Stueber, Kirkland, type guys or new late round picks. I'd release Volson.

Not a fan of T. Brown. I saw a giant man that got ran over by smaller DL before he got hurt again. I believe Ford has proved he can be the OL off the bench.

RE: Cody Ford - bengalfan74 - 01-05-2025

Yes I'd take Ford back without question.

RE: Cody Ford - Truck_1_0_1_ - 01-05-2025

I'd bring him and Trent Brown back as backups.

Fix the interior

Agreed, they are serviceable backups and it's time to say bye to Volson and Cappa.

RE: Cody Ford - Synric - 01-05-2025

Cody Ford's been better at Tackle than Guard. Bengals don't have a guard on the entire roster.

Agreed.

T. Brown, Ford, and even Cochran were serviceable at OT at times.

G would be my top FA priority. Well, in terms of new signings, anyway. Locking up Tee, Chase & Trey extensions, a Burrow restructure, those are top. But some of the extensions can perhaps wait until after the draft. Tee and the FA stuff comes first chronologically.

I just finished my first re-watch of the game and I will say that Ford had much less help than I remembered. I only counted twelve plays where he had blocking help. He definitely took some lumps but it was an impressive showing. Here are some notes I took on this specific match-up. Useful for the thread.

  1. Ford had some really impressive reps against Watt. For example, early in the first, Watt faked outside and tried cut underneath Ford and he maintained his base really well and was able to neutralize him immediately.
  2.  The first Burrow fumble was a ford mistake. He should have squeezed down and blocked Queen since Queen had the more direct line to Burrow. However, he opted to block Watt and got whipped. If Queen didn't get there, Watt would have.
  3. Watt beat Ford bad enough to force Burrow to step up in the pocket. Not a bad rep for Cody but he got beat. Even worse rep for Volson, though. He was manhandled on this rep and his guy easily cleaned up for the sack.
  4. Watt recorded a sack fumble in the second quarter but it was nullified due to defensive holding. Ford was dominated on this rep. Watt was able to get the edge and dip around him.
  5. Watt beat Ford badly again right before halftime. He was able to get the edge and froced Burrow to step up and quickly dump it off to Herbert. Herbert dropped it, but it would have been a loss of three.
  6. In the first half, Ford did a great job of preventing Watt from getting his hands inside and bullying him backwards. He handled the exchanges on stunts well but has struggled quite a bit when Watt utilizes his speed rush to get the edge. It's TJ Watt, though. I'm giving Ford some credit here. He lost some reps but has done a fine job.
  7. Starting out the second half, Watt tries to get the edge again and Ford handles it beautifully. Burrow steps up but was never in trouble. This was an awesome snap by Ford.
  8. Just a note that when Watt goes out and Smith comes in, Ford dominates him. He's won every single rep that I have seen.
  9. Ford loses a rep with Watt going inside and Burrow escapes the pocket. This is his first snap back from injury.
  10. Another attempt by Watt to get the outside edge and Ford shuts him down completely.
That's most of what I have got. Watt was completely irrelevant in the run game but this is partially due to the gameplan by Cincinnati, I think. They never really ran at him or to the edges much. If they did run to the edge, it was opposite his side. Watt won some reps and had impact but his biggest win was nullified by penalty. Ford probably saw Watt on somewhere between 30-35 of his snaps and had help on twelve of those. He gave up some pressures and a couple QB hits by my eyes (though probably not fitting the official definition) but that's it. If that is the performance you get from your back-up utility lineman then that is a victory IMO. Impressive game.
