DC/OL wish list - bfine32 - 01-06-2025

Now that Lou and Frank have been shown the door, it's time to share your desired replacements.

My personal fav for DC is Wink Matendale (DC/MICH). And he can bring Kenneth Grant with him.

For Defensive Coordinator I'm thinking of bringing back Zimmer if the Cowboys let him go.

I've been a Zimmer fan, and I think the Cowboys were destined to be a mess regardless... but I can't help but question if Zimmer is still good in today's NFL. There's plenty of good or even great coordinators who just aren't able to keep up with the times and are left behind, and I fear he might be one of them.

Man, I LOVE that idea.

I also think Eberflus could be a great DC as well.

O line coaches, I don't have much of an opinion on.

RE: DC/OL wish list - ochocincos - 01-06-2025

I always liked the defenses Eberflus ran in Indy when he was DC, so he's on my list for sure.

I'm not familiar with position coaches, but I found this online for Top OL coaches in college from Summer 2023.
Maybe one of them could be pulled if there aren't any good OL coaches becoming available from NFL teams?

No (old) retreads, thank you: get a guy who has had great success as a position coach and has a foot in the door as a DC, like Leonhard or go for a young guy that has had success, but didn't do well as a coach (an Eberflus, Staley-type, not that I would want either of those specific guys).

Even Mayo I wouldn't be opposed to.

Oh please.....

RE: DC/OL wish list - Boomer Anderson - 01-06-2025

Dennis Allen?
Robert Saleh?
Eberflus?

would be thrilled with any of these guys.

How about OL coaches???

I'm very surprised you brought him up.  I was never impressed with what he did in Baltimore against us.  Seemed very stubborn to change what he was doing when it wasn't working.  I'm not sure we have the talent to do what he wants

RE: DC/OL wish list - NUGDUKWE - 01-06-2025

I remember Zac wanted Dennis Allen as soon as he got the job. I thought they must've had a connection to think he would leave Sean Peyton and Drew Brees to come here (maybe Zac is just nuts). My dream would be Flores though but that's not happening.

RE: DC/OL wish list - ochocincos - 01-06-2025

Two things to point out for the DC:
1) Bengals might look to make sure to bring in a guy who runs a 4-3 given that's the personnel they have been running for years. It would likely take an overhaul to convert it properly into a 3-4, and the Bengals aren't in a rebuilding mode.

2) We might see the new DC actually go back down to primarily 4 DBs instead of 5, going back to 3 LBs.

Noteworthy that Eberflus ran a 4-3 in his time in Indy.

RE: DC/OL wish list - CKwi88 - 01-06-2025

A pretty vanilla take, but Dennis Allen would be at the top of my short list for DC. I think Saleh wants/deserves another shot at HC somewhere. Allen seems more like a Spagnuolo/LeBeau type that is an uninspiring HC but a quality DC.

RE: DC/OL wish list - michaelsean - 01-06-2025

Whoever they pick, he sucks and needs to be gone now. LOL

RE: DC/OL wish list - KillerGoose - 01-06-2025

For offensive line, my first inclination is to get someone from the Falcons coaching roster. They have had a shotgun heavy offense the last two seasons and have done a good job, I think, of keeping their guys protected as best as possible. In 2023, their QBs were sacked 40 times but this was also a carousel of Ridder and Heinicke. Mostly Ridder.

With that in mind, a name I would throw out as someone to look at would be Assistant OL Coach Nick Jones from Atlanta. He has been an assistant OL coach for the last five seasons with both the Rams and Falcons.

Dennis Allen also ran a 4-3 when he was DC with New Orleans, IIRC, right?
And I know he had pretty good defenses there starting in 2017 through 2023.

I'd also be game for him.

If he's who Taylor had wanted before, I can see that being the logical choice.
Plus, Allen has coached Hendrickson before, so he has some familiarity with at least one guy.

This. Zimmer's time has passed.

Stink Fartindale? He hates us and we hate him.

RE: DC/OL wish list - rfaulk34 - 01-06-2025

Call it what you want...but in the Bengals heyday they always ran a 34 on defense and a wide zone run game. Their past is littered with cutback runners who did very well. Chase Brown would be great in that.

I understand how big of a shift it would be to transform the defense, but you have all offseason now. I always preferred the versatility of a 34 base anyway. Prolly not gonna happen, but some real changes need to happen around here.

And for the love of God...do NOT seek Paul Alexanders recommendations on a new Oline coach. STAY THE **** AWAY FROM HIM.

I like this take. Besides QB protection, I think it was the ATL v WAS game I was watching and I found myself thinking that their OL must be pretty darn good when everyone and their mother knows they want to feed Bijan Robinson and they're still opening up holes for him.

He hated us because we were the enemy. He is a Dayton native.

I can promise 1-thing w/ Wink. We'll get to the QB with more than 1 person.

I want nothing to do w/ Mayo, he enjoys being controversial.

Perhaps Perce from LA if they go a different direction. He did work w/ Marvin this past off-season.
