Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - bengalfan74 - 03-03-2025

Good

EDLC - 12 at bats 5 runs, 6 hits, two 2B, 3 HR's. .500 avg, and 2 walks!!

CES - 12 at bats 2 runs, 3 hits 2 HR's .250 average. Perhaps he'll come back around?

A. Hays - 10 at bats 2 runs, one 2b, 2 HR's, 6 RBI's

M. Mc Lain - 14 at bats 4 runs, 7 hits, three 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI's .500 avg.

TJ Friedl - 15 at bats 3 runs, 4 hits, one 2b .267 avg - showing some life

J. Candelario - 11 at bats 1 run, 3 hits, .273 avg. not great but not awful

B Dunn - 13 at bats 2 runs, 5 hits, one 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI .385 avg.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad

Benson - 9 at bats 4 strike outs - I doubt he makes the team

R. Hinds - in 10 at bats hitting .100 with 4 strike outs. The 6 game or whatever tear last season may have been his peak.

Pitching

H. Greene 15.75 ERA in 4 innings 7 runs 7 hits and 3 walks. I get it it's way early and guys are trying new stuff but it still raises one eyebrow for me

Here's to hoping Lodolo can get on track today

You don't want to be a dumpster fire and finish last or second-to-last, but really outside of that the only goal for spring training should be getting some playing time and staying healthy. No other success seems to really ever carry over from Spring Training.

Last year....
Our top three HR guys were CES, Luke Maile, and Nick Martini
Stuart Fairchild led us in doubles
Will Benson led us in both walks and stolen bases
Spencer Steer was our AVG leader hitting .340
Luke Maile, Mike Ford, Stuart Fairchild, Spencer Steer, and CES all had 30+ AB and an OPS over 1.000

Heck...
The Rockies were 2nd in the Cactus League last year and finished 61-101 in regular season.
The Padres were 12th in the Cactus League last year just one spot above us and finished 93-69 in the regular season and went to the Division Series in the postseason.

So I have long since taken a much more passive viewing experience of Spring Training and really just hope that they don't go winless and as many starters are healthy for Opening Day as possible.

Oh I get it. It's not like I'm putting any major stock in spring training games. It's just that I want so badly to see this team be competitive and have some success. 1990 was a long time ago.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - bengalfan74 - 03-04-2025

Friedl 2 hits yesterday up to .353 avg.

EDLC 2 more walks - good to see

Herd a bees batting .600 in limited at bats I'd say. This team has to lower their strike outs and raise their on base percentage.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - Goalpost - 03-04-2025

The good.  Reds stole 5 bases last night against the Brewers.  One of them was stealing home on a double steal.

The bad.  The Reds were picked off 3 times.  And had 1 caught stealing.  To be fair, one Brewer pitcher had a borderline balk move.

In early spring, Francona mentioned that his managerial preference was to leave a player alone after a 1st mistake.  But confront him, unlike Bell did, if a second one occurs.

We'll have to see if Francona can really fix the bad here.

I sure hope so and there's a lot of fixin to do. Like you say way to many boneheaded base running mistakes last year.

They've got to quit swinging at pitches that bounce two feet in front of the plate or are two feet outside. Teach them how to lay down a friggin bunt and quit swinging out of their shoes on every pitch.

Situational awareness, baseball smarts

Must have been the one Dunn got picked off on. When they showed the replay i thought how is that not a balk?

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - c766 - 03-04-2025

Would love to see Elly take a reduced role the rest of spring (two games per week), I would let McLain daily play through around St Pat, then maybe 2 games per week before OD as well.

Ashcraft got rocked yesterday 2.2 innings pitched 8 hits, 5 runs back to being the guy we know and love Ninja

When you can't throw a fastball for a strike so you throw nothing but cutters . . . it's time to give up on the dream of being a starter and focus on being the best reliever that you can be.

Yep ThumbsUp

He's like a middle relief kinda guy that doesn't pitch a lot of innings.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - Forever Spinning Vinyl - 03-09-2025

Today's lineup looked pretty official.

Friedl - CF
McLain - 2B
De La Cruz - SS - 0 for 2 with 2 Ks lefty . . . sweet balanced stroke on a ground ball up the middle batting righty. Still hitting .526 in this ST.
Hays - LF
Lux - 3B  2 for 2 today with two walks. Now hitting .278 in Spring
Stephenson - DH
Fraley - RF
Encarnacion-Strand - 1B - 2 for 3 today with an infield single and another bomb. Now hitting .300 this Spring.
Trevino - C

All that's really missing is Steer and Candelerio. I like this lineup. Spreads out the lefties pretty well. Add in Espinal and either Fairchild, Dunn or Herd of Bees, who is having a heck of a Spring(hitting .571) and had yet another great play on defense today.

First time that I've seen Lyon Richardson pitch since his brief call up a couple of seasons ago. He only threw one inning today but he looked far more like a pitcher than just a thrower. Another potential #5 starter . . . The Reds have a lot in their arsenal. There were seasons where we had no idea who was going to finish out the starting five.

I've liked a lot of what I've seen thus far. CES hitting, Elly blasting, McClain hitting well and so on. Hays has a team leading 9 RBI's!!

I believe they need to end the Ashcraft as a starter experiment. I hope Greene gets more on track as we go this spring. Marte is pretty much stinking, he may have already peaked? But overall I'm pretty happy.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - Forever Spinning Vinyl - 03-10-2025

I smiled watching this play out in the top of the first. I think that I'm going to like this Francona guy.

Friedl walks . . . advances to 2B on a wild pitch.
McLain hits a ground ball to the 2nd baseman, Friedl advances to 3rd - LOVED watching basic, winning baseball.
De La Cruz hits a hard ground ball that gets by a drawn in infield.

Last year, we watched guys trying to crush the ball and hit in front of the runner, by hitting behind the runner, that enabled Elly's hit to happen because if the defense wasn't pulled in to stop the runner on 3rd, that's out number two instead of a hit.
Hays flies out to left.
Candelerio then hits a two out homer for a 3-0 lead.
Under David Bell, there's a great chance that the inning would have been scoreless.

Elly's shortened stride/swing was noticed by the Padre announcers. They commented that he stayed alive on his second plate appearance because of it.

"Last year, he wouldn't have fouled that off. Since he's shortened his leg kick, he's able to see the ball a little longer because he's not committing so early."

He later earned a walk . . . he got thrown out stealing a couple of pitches later, but he turned a 2024 strikeout into a 2025 walk.

Greene with only one hit given up through three innings, a two out single by Bogaerts in the 2nd inning. He then gave up a solo shot to Tatis Jr to start the 4th before striking out the next three. 49 pitches - 37 strikes - 5 Ks - 0 BBs - 2 hits - 1 HR

Edited to add: All nine starters had three plate appearances except for Candelerio, Friedl and McLain, they had four plate appearances. Get them ready for game 1! LOVE IT!!!

Good to hear Greene had a good outing.

Marte has been sent down to AAA

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - bengalfan74 - 03-12-2025

Singer with another good outing - 4 innings pitched, 1 hit, 1 walk, 7 K's 2.35 ERA thus far.

Herd a bees with another hit batting .529 in 17 at bats and 4 stolen bases. Elly still batting .500 and with 5 walks. If they can get his stance and approach at the plate cleaned up it could be a whale of a season for him.

McClain, Friedl and CES all doing well.

Fraley only batting .158 in 9 games.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - samhain - 03-12-2025

CES developing into a legit power bat would be a huge boon to this team's success. I'm reluctant to buy into spring training hype. He's done this before. Maybe at 100 percent, the outcome will be different this season.

RE: Some encouraging signs so far, and bad - Forever Spinning Vinyl - 03-13-2025

Lodolo with 4 IP - 3 H - 1 BB - 6 K - 0 R - 66 pitches . . . . however it was against the A's and their backups. 3.12 ERA in Spring Training

Fraley and Lux were put in the lineup to face up lefty on lefty. Something to keep in mind when looking at both of their weak averages.

Through 7 innings 1-1 tie.

Fraley 1 for 3, a stolen base and a run scored.
Lux 0 for 1 with two walks and a stolen base.
Candelerio 1 for 3 with the lone RBI
