Tobin on his way out? - jj22 - 03-13-2025 Writing on the wall reads yes. The disconnect between Tobin and the FO has never been more exposed, and it's telling from the outside eye looking in. Look no further than the scouting combine. The FO has completely cut Tobin down at the knees. The usual buttoned up and no news breaking media session was full of Tobin proclamations. He agreed with Burrow (they haven't done anything Burrow wanted). He planed to make sure we have enough to bring in outside talent. Wanted to revamp the defense. Brining in outside FA's. This wasn't just a misstatement. It was a clear plan he had and was wiling to communicate and articulate. Tobin is wise and has been around long enough to know what to say and to expect, and yet he got it all remarkably wrong. Insiders are talking that this is significant and if you don't remember the media session, I'd recommend listening to it again below. People in his position do not take the public blow to their credibility lightly and Tobin can get a GM position elsewhere. This is looking like the beginning of the end for him as it's exposed he has no power after all this time. RE: Tobin on his way out? - Luvnit2 - 03-13-2025 Is this just an opinion or can you so provide proof this is going to happen? Using the phrase "it's telling from the outside eye looking in" pretty much lets you know that it's his opinion.. Not sure if it means he’s on his way out, but definitely shows there is some disfunction between GM and ownership. Listening to his “plan” again, it’s almost exactly opposite of what has happened. They haven’t extended anyone one quickly, they haven’t given Tee a long term deal, they haven’t made chase highest paid non QB, they haven’t paid outside free agents. They’ve done the exact opposite and even exactly what he said he didn’t want: the same team on new contracts. He wants the players who deserve raises to get raises and then go get new players to add to the talent. None of that has happened. Many have said, me included, this is the most important off season of JB era, and probably in past 20 years. And two years in a row they’ve failed in the offseason. Last year that showed on the field. RE: Tobin on his way out? - jj22 - 03-13-2025 (Yesterday, 06:04 PM)Luvnit2 Wrote: Is this just an opinion or can you so pprovide proof this is going to happen? Opinion but they have been talking about it the last couple days on local radio. A far as how confident he came across and how that was even noteworthy. There’s a disconnect between him and the FO and the Scouting Combine gaffe exposed it. RE: Tobin on his way out? - J24 - 03-13-2025 I don't think this is a bad theory at all but I'm not sure that Duke has the balls to resign. RE: Tobin on his way out? - jj22 - 03-13-2025 Someone once posted from local reporter that said that he’d be quickly hired as a GM somewhere if ever let go. I wasn’t sold but they seemed confident. RE: Tobin on his way out? - Wyche'sWarrior - 03-13-2025 Obviously an opinion....but it's a pretty good theory. It depends on Duke. If it were me, I'd punch my card and hit the bricks. After his presser, I was pretty shocked at how candid he was. I don't recall ever seeing that from him. As the OP noted, NONE of his plans have been implemented. NONE. Now, if Duke is content with his lifetime job, then he stays. Maybe I've been too hard on the guy....who knows who calls what shots with this tight lipped dysfunctional bunch of idiots. That said, the fact that Tobin laid out a concise, pinpoint plan to improve the team....that sounded pretty damn good, I might add....and they've sat on their inept hands is indeed rather telling. I'd be putting out feelers, and jump at the first viable option. Those pressers and most things that come from the Bengals management are PR. Not direct windows into their motives. I doubt Tobin is the reason for no extensions. It's likely guaranteed money and timing of it. His comment about Chase was stupid though. RE: Tobin on his way out? - RunKijanaRun - 03-13-2025 This entire organization is a joke. If I’m him, I’d want out. RE: Tobin on his way out? - Nate (formerly eliminate08) - 03-13-2025 Honestly makes me think Duke isn't the problem. The plan was sound, just didn't happen and that has to be on the FO not forking out the proper dough to make it happen. The Bengals shocked us all when they made all of those moves in 2020 and 2021. They could equally shock us all by announcing the Chase and Higgins deals at the same time. Keeping Trey and signing a Guard that's worth a damn would be the icing on the cake. Keeping Trey and signing a Guard that's worth a damn would be the icing on the cake. So hypothetically, say they keep Chase, Tee, Trey. Extension or whatever. They still need 2 Guards, a Safety, slot CB, and starting DE. And maybe a LB to replace Pratt. That's a lot of needs. RE: Tobin on his way out? - Clark W Griswold - 03-13-2025 Maybe he was trying to pressure them like Burrow. Ha their cheapness will not cave in to public pressure. I don’t know how much power he’s ever had within the organization. He is almost family but not quite. Like Duke or not we should all hope he stays. Who the hell else is taking a job with these clowns? Can you imagine them “selling” the position to someone: “This will be a great opportunity for you to be the leader of an NFL font office. You will get to do a lot of hands on work (scouting all across the country with your coaches) that other teams don’t offer. We also don’t offer you the GM title like every other team but that’s not important. What’s important is you being the top evaluator/decision maker for an NFL franchise. You choose the FA or draft pick that you want and he will be a Bengal just as long as you remember to get it approved by Troy so that he can then get it approved by his boss/wife Katie and if she OKs it then it just needs to be approved by the ancient Ebenezer Brown. We can offer you a starting salary of $32,000/year with a chance to learn up to a 1% bonus if the Bengals win 5 straight Super Bowls. When can you start?” RE: Tobin on his way out? - ochocincos - 03-13-2025 If he was on his way out, they would have let him go and brought in a new director of player personnel. No reason to slow roll him out. RE: Tobin on his way out? - jj22 - 03-13-2025 He’s in no man’s land right now. These shakeup typically happen after the draft. I don’t think he’ll be fired but this blunder is noteworthy with regards to how much weight he really holds. And just how connected he is with the family. Philosophically. RE: Tobin on his way out? - Millhouse - 03-13-2025 Another theory could be that Tobin is starting to set himself up for another job by distancing himself from front office with a lot on the line at the moment. (or is that the main theory?) Then again it's all probably nothing. I am just waiting on some carryout lol. RE: Tobin on his way out? - QueenCity - 03-13-2025 Hate to be that guy - but I'll see it when it happens. RE: Tobin on his way out? - samhain - 03-13-2025 The deals for the stars shouldn't be rocket science. Either Duke was trying to avoid media scrutiny at the combine or he got handcuffed by the family. Marvin had a saying about things like this, perhaps the most famous saying in modern Bengal history. We all know it. My hearing ain't getting any better, either. |
