QB2 - jj22 - 03-17-2025

We are set at the top and the plan is to never know one way or another if the backup is any good.

However with a championship roster (offense) are we still ok with the backup quarterback approach.

Are we good with Browning still. Or is it time to draft and develop a QB2.

Folks did use to think we could get a first for Browning so maybe he’s good enough.

RE: QB2 - Nicomo Cosca - 03-17-2025

No way they’re taking a QB this year with only 6 picks.

RE: QB2 - The D.O.Z. - 03-17-2025

I’m good w Browning. Plus we only have six picks, as of right now, in a weak QB class. They’ll add an UDFA or two after the draft, for OTA purposes and maybe if a guy stands out a bit, they’ll hang onto him through pre season and stash him on the PS.

RE: QB2 - Bilbo Saggins - 03-17-2025

With only 6 picks it'd be pretty tough to squeeze in a QB imo. RB and TE seem deep. I'm sure they want at least one DE, one or two DTs, and a guard. That's awfully tight without trading down or trading future draft picks.

They might do well to nab someone like Connor Bazelak as a UDFA to develop

RE: QB2 - Nicomo Cosca - 03-17-2025

Also, who the hell ever thought we could get a 1st for Browning? I need receipts. LOL

RE: QB2 - TheLeonardLeap - 03-17-2025

Ultimately doesn't matter. This team is built so heavily around Burrow slinging it nearly 40 times per game with a shitty OL that if he goes down we're not making the playoffs or beating any good teams.

In '23 without Burrow we went 3-0 against non-playoff teams, 0-3 against playoff teams (and 1-0 against backups). So ultimately QB2 is so far down the list of needs that it's essentially non-existent.

Eagles had the 4th scoring defense and 3rd rushing(4th rushing ypc) offense the year Nick Foles won the SB as the backup. That's not us.

If we could have ever gotten a 1st for Browning (or even a 2nd) he would have stopped being on this team that very second. He was on practice squads for his first 4 years in the NFL.

This team has a lot of needs. So no! It’d have to be a high draft pick. We don’t have that luxury. We need a DT. We need a DE. We need an OG.We need a S. Maybe they go with a FA to fill one of them. This team is 2 years away from a SB team IMHO. Now if they uncharacteristically hit in the draft maybe they can get there this year. But I’ve said this multiple times on here the last month. We’ve drafted 12 guys the last 4 year that were top 3 picks. How many were very good? Chase & Mims. CTB okay and Dax Hill started his second year. That’s awful.
 Mims
Jenkins
Burton
Murphy
Turner
Battle
Dax Hill
CTB
Zach Carter
Chase
Carman
Ossai

Chase & Mims are the only rookie starters. Did CTB? I’m just pointing out that’s a poor hit rate.

Would you like to see competition?

I agree not with 6 picks but it’s time we think about getting serious about QB2…And think it’s close if not time to draft one late.

RE: QB2 - phil413 - 03-17-2025

I mean if we got desperate enough to fill starter spots I'd offer Browning up for draft capital to recoup some of what's sent out.  Like if you could land a solid balanced DE for a 2nd and you could get the Titans 3rd for Browning maybe.  You gamble with the drop-off to a cheap vet like Lock or Bridgewater.  Doubt they do it, I'm happy with Browning.  They really can't warrant the pick or roster spot to develop a player.  More likely he plays his contract out and you roll with a cheap FA next year.  I'm usually the guy that would petition for the value of a solid backup that could come in and go 2-2 if Burrow was out a month.  Browning is that guy.

RE: QB2 - Wyche'sWarrior - 03-18-2025

I'm good with Browning. He has shown he could hold down the fort for a few weeks if need be and keep the wheels on the wagon. Why gamble and ship him off for a complete unknown?

Bazalek has been in college like 6 years bounced around and had only 1 good season no thanks.

RE: QB2 - JaggedJimmyJay - 03-18-2025

QB2 is still important for short-term Burrow injuries (hopefully never a problem, but always possible). If he misses a game or two midseason, we need someone who gives the team a reasonable chance to win.

I think Browning is fine. He showed me plenty in 2023, enough that I'd have no more confidence in any draft pick.

If anyone thought we could get a 1st round pick for Browning, that's some serious homerism.

Offer the Bengals a 4th and his bags are packed!

RE: QB2 - Sled21 - 03-18-2025

Browning is a perfect fit for this team. He is good enough to win when needed, and doesn't break the bank. Hopefully the coaches learned from the last extended Burrow injury and don't wait several weeks to tweak the offense to Browning's strengths instead of Burrows. If they do that, Browning can keep us winning.

Yeah, hard pass. I think someone advocated for McDonald last year. What is it with people wanting below average BGSU QBs?  Hilarious

Let's at least give Eddie George a chance to build that program and see if he can produce more NFL talent - which we know the MAC doesn't have a lot of guys succeed in the pros.

I'd agree, Browning is the right backup QB for Burrow right now.

RE: QB2 - jj22 - 03-18-2025

Would you rather Flacco?

No, Flacco has not changed even in his old age. Browns should have kept him though, but he always throws a late game INT to seal the loss.

Jake Browning is a good backup. We need Burrow healthy and all-in on defense.

RE: QB2 - Millhouse - 03-18-2025

Highly doubt they can find someone that would be better for 2025 for same type of value. And right now, Bengals probably need his value (million a year).

I say this as QB2 is the most important backup position too, so thumbs up with Browning imo.

RE: QB2 - Au165 - 03-18-2025

There is a famous quote by Tom Moore. When someone asked why Peyton Manning's backups never got any reps in practice he said "If 18 goes down we are F'd, we don't practice F'd". I think we are kind of in that situation with Burrow at this point. Browning is good enough to hold down the fort but I don't think we are really worried about a back up plan for Joe because at this point if Joe goes we go.

Plus, I just love that quote.
