Welcome Barrett Carter - pally - 04-26-2025

22 year old lb out of Clemson. Obviously the team felt that position needed bolstering

Last time they doubled down on LB was the Wilson/Pratt draft.2

Pratt was a year earlier

Wilson was with ADG and Markus Bailey in the 2020 Burrow/Higgins draft.

Also . . . this may signal the end of a 4-2-5 and back to a standard 4-3-4?

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - Luvnit2 - 04-26-2025

Carter reads, reacts and gets downhill so quickly that blockers can have a difficult time reaching him on zone runs. He slips blocks and sifts through traffic without taking his eyes off the ball carrier. Carter ran well on his pro day, which shows up on his film when he's chasing inside out. In pass coverage, he keeps up with tight ends and can pick up running backs in the flat. Carter effectively spies the QB, too, with 12.5 sacks over the past three seasons. He's quick and closes well when rushing off the edge or between the tackles. -- Steve Muench

The NFL on average runs 11 personnel 65% of the time. That means defenses mostly run 425 to matchup. Bengals took 4 stack linebackers in 2019/2020 they were still a heavy 425 defense.

Logan
Knight
Carter
Burks
Maema
Heyward
Giles-Harris

I think those bottom 2 guys are gone, leaves us with 5, which we've always had, so don't expect any wholesale changes.

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - JaggedJimmyJay - 04-26-2025

I don't think a 4-3 base works anymore for the most part. The Bengals may emphasize it more than they have lately, especially in AFC North games. I still expect a ton of 4-2-5 though.

Golden was with us for one year before and we drafted three LBers. 2/3 of are gone/contracts up and we drafted two more now that he is back.

Nice. Like this Barrett Carter pick a lot, Hodges is getting his guys. Burks, Knight and Carter to go along with Logan Wilson?

The LB room is looking stacked after being very disappointing the last couple of years. This is definitely a sign of more 3 LB's on the field
that can tackle and cover. Goodbye Germaine Pratt and you just trying to strip the ball out instead of trying to actually tackle.

I take Shaka over Meta myself.

Yeah it sends a message of accountability but also is insurance incase either rookie takes longer with a learning curve.  We still are going to play a lot of 2 LB looks and maybe even some 3-3 looks in nickle.  Really hard to argue vs Carter's value here.

Carter was high school teammate of DJ Turner

Truth, Golden is trying to get his guys and get the ones that can adapt as quickly as possible. Lots didn't like the Shemar Stewart pick but even
he is probably the best at setting the edge in the run game of all our Ends right now with Sam retiring. Knight and Carter are extremely polished
leaders and are as proven as a Draft pick could be, sound tacklers, instinctual and extremely smart.

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - Bengalstripes9 - 04-26-2025

Crazy how much higher all the linebackers went other than the top one.

The front 7 was definitely a huge need going into the offseason and I like that they added a good disrupter opposite of Trey—and they obviously needed linebackers. Knight was rated as top 3 so I fully understand that pick.

Bleacher report gave the bengals an A on the Carter pick as well.

If they need 3 linebackers and only have 2. I get it.

Hard to have a strong opinion about a pick this late but I will say I like the top 3 picks a lot.

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - puddycat - 04-26-2025

I begin to believe that there is something about Logan Wilson's injury that we haven't been told.

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - Goalpost - 04-26-2025

Assuming you list Jalon Walker as an edge, we drafted LB's ranked 3 and 4 overall behind Campbell and Schwesinger.

Yeah if you don't set the edge you can't clean up or blitz well.  Also, how many times did we watch Lou send the same 4 with the occasional telegraphed 5th rusher?  Stewart has experience moving around the line and we drafted 2LBs that have some blitz ability.  Have to love the multiple looks.

Golden is impressed with Shaka, so I think you may be right. Meta is a big hitter, but he doesn't have great speed. I think he's on the PS.

RE: Welcome Barrett Carter - The D.O.Z. - 04-26-2025

I think we’ll still run a lot of 4-2-5 as opposing offenses run 11 personnel and spread sets, but we’ll be much better prepared to stop the run and cover TEs on running downs and 12 personnel in the traditional 4-3 now rather than using a slot CB / 3rd safety. We should match up better in the AFCN if these LB picks pan out.

but in our division it was just round 55%, i like the idea of a more physical LB group
