He planned on retiring after this season before tearing his Achilles after only playing 7 games. With 670 yards, he had on pace for a 1,500+ yard season.

Ah it's not Baltimore unless there is an almost 40 year old at WR.

Admire his toughness but I wonder how much explosion he will lose.

Is he the new Brett Favre? Can we expect him to send pics of his junk to chicks who work for the Ravens? Ninja

I don't think this is the best idea for him. Oh well, he probably wants more $ before he retires.

What's he gonna do?  Hurt himself?  He was playing with a broken back this season. He's a different breed.  I've always loved watching him play.

Best wishes to him making a full recovery and return to form. He's a future HOFer, and I would like to see him retire on his own terms.

Hall of Famer? You sure about that? Great player but he isn't an all timer. What makes him a HoFamer in your mind Sunset?

Does anyone remember when Steven Smith took his helmet off and cold cocked a teammate who was taking a knee in the jaw with the helmet. Guy has always had issues with temper and violence. Yes he gets the job done on the field but history matters when we compare him to the all timers

His numbers

I think he is the discussion for Hall of Fame. but if we just go by numbers.. OUR MAN Ken Riley and Ken Anderson would be in also.. so not so simple but he does have a chance.. he might get hurt by some of his all field antics through the years...

Body of work.  Currently 961 receptions for nearly 14K yards and 76 TDs, and 53 receptions of 40 yards or more.

If he comes back and plays even an average season, he will be over 1000 receptions.  Maybe not 1st ballot HOFer, but likely at some point.

Well Torry Holt has just as good of numbers and has played 4 less seasons I believe and he is not in HOF... Holt made it to the Super Bowl and won so if he does not get in I dont think Smith will either

As I stated, numbers are numbers... Ken Riley ranks like 5th all time in INTS and he is not in.. and just say Ken Anderson and that tells you numbers don;t always seem to matter, they say Anderson did not win a Super Bowl..

2005

Only the 3rd modern-era player to win the single-season, wide-receiver Triple Crown (first in receptions, yards and touchdowns).

So 1 year then. How does that equate to a hall of fame career? Great player but not all timer.

Btw chad johnson practically had the same stats as smith in 2005.

Is he a hall of Famer then as well?

Which aren't that mindblowingly great.

5 Pro Bowls
2 All-Pros
15th in receptions
11th in receiving yards
29th in receiving TDs

By the time he's HoF eligible, he'll be much further down the list, too. Right now there are 5 active players ahead of him in receptions, 2 active players ahead of him in yards, 5 active players ahead of him in TDs.

In 6 years which would be 1 more year, +5 years for eligibility, he won't look impressive at all. He's already a borderline guy because there's a lot of active players already ahead of him statistically. Just imagine where some other players will be in 2021...

Steve Smith: 961 / 13,932 / 76 (Age 37 in 2016)
AJ Green: 913 / 13,576 / 99 (Projected 2021 stats, age 33)
Julio Jones: 911 / 13,642 / 75 (Projected 2021 stats, age 32)
DeAndre Hopkins: 717 / 10,599 / 57 (Projected 2021 stats, age 29)
Antonio Brown: 1,052 / 14,186 / 76 (Projected 2021 stats, age 33)
Odell Beckham: 748 / 11,020 / 100 (Projected 2012 stats, age 29)

Not counting where Fitzgerald and Marshall will finish, not mentioning Bryant or Thomas.

Fact is, the dude is a borderline HoF guy right now at best, but by the time Smith is eligible for the HoF, his stats won't be very impressive.

Great post. Not to mention megatron will be in that mix as well.
