Playing GM for a day - Crowe - 01-02-2016 Hey All, One of my favorite things to follow is the NFL draft along with mock drafts and free agency. What I'm doing is compiling a list of the Bengals players who will be free agents after this season along with players we have on the practice squad, top free agents available by position from other teams that I feel could be a fit and a list of the consensus top 100 players heading into the draft. Let the board know what you would do in terms of free agency, would you promote a player from the practice squad, and what would you do via the draft. Have fun with this. **If you notice any free agents that have already been signed let us know as well as any free agents who were left off the list that you feel could fit with the Bengals** Free Agents: Leon Hall CB 31 CIN TBD $9,600,000 UFA Andre Smith RT 28 CIN TBD $6,362,500 UFA Reggie Nelson FS 32 CIN TBD $4,775,000 UFA Vincent Rey ILB 28 CIN TBD $3,100,000 UFA Adam-Pacman Jones CB 32 CIN TBD $2,550,000 UFA Emmanuel Lamur OLB 26 CIN TBD $2,356,000 UFA Wallace Gilberry DE 31 CIN TBD $2,050,000 UFA Mohamed Sanu WR 26 CIN TBD $1,682,813 UFA George Iloka SS 25 CIN TBD $1,582,075 UFA Eric Winston RT 32 CIN TBD $950,000 UFA Brandon Thompson DT 26 CIN TBD $795,300 UFA Marvin Jones WR 25 CIN TBD $700,700 UFA Brandon Tate WR 28 CIN TBD $665,000 UFA Pat Sims DT 30 CIN TBD $665,000 UFA T.J. You've done some homework here. Certainly there are some options for the Bengals going into 2016. On bringing in players (currently in the NFL), there are some positions that could be filled with some immediate impact. My concerns would be Offensive Lineman and for Defense it would be CB's and Safety's. I think that the Bengals are good with RB's and WR. We've got two very strong RB's on the PS that could play next season. For LB's, I wonder about Hawk, Lamur, Rey and maybe even Maualuga in 2016. I know, Mau got a nice contract in 2015, but production really hasn't been there in the scheme of things for the last 3 years. You don't have a lot of LB's in the top 100 Rookie Prospects on your list and I not convinced that the top 10 listed from other NFL teams would offer much especially at the ILB position. For the Money, Roach at the ILB position would be a good pick off the PS to the roster for 2016 compared to what is available as FA's for 2016. Again, I've looked at the Draft prospects for 2016 at the ILB position and only 4 really stand out. The other prospects don't really offer anything more than Roach who came from a Pro-style 4-3 in college and now has one year with the Bengals defensive system at the 4-3 scheme. He showed well in the 2015 pre-season, but was behind a lot of tenure and experience, so the Bengals stashed him away on the PS. He'll get his shot in 2016. Still, if the above mentioned LB's who I think might be question marks for 2016 are not signed, then yes, we'll need LB's. Which I think a Rookie and two FA's would be a good choice here. I think for RB, we'll see some new ones at camp in 2016, but again I think the two on the PS are pretty solid. It will be a nice battle for this position in 2016. CB/Safety - We'll need help here. Hall and Jones have hit their peaks and we can't stay healthy at these position here. Defensive tackles - Peko will probably be gone next year. We'll need so fresh bodies here. I'd say go with a Top Pick Rookie in this position. Just my thoughts! RE: Playing GM for a day - Crowe - 01-02-2016 Thanks and sorry about the clutter, I tried to format each section to read easier but it wouldn't allow the changes to stick. I do like Roach and now that he has ample time to recover from his injuries I think he could really impress next season, I also have high hopes for Deshawn Williams and Jake Kummerow. I think we are stacked at RB especially with the two on the PS. For me I think we should look to upgrade depth via free agency and use the draft to grab impact players. A couple of the linebackers that I like via the draft might and probably will not be there and that's Jaylon Smith, Myles Jack, Scooby Wright and Derron Lee, we sorely need better backers besides Burfict, I'm also hoping that PJ Dawson gets ample play time next season. For the defensive backfield we need some depth as injuries/age are a concern, I was impressed with Dennard in his limited time and Shaw has looked good, I believe Dre K. is athletic but early in the season he was out of position he's been much better the second half. I'd look to resign both Hall and Jones and like to see Hall used as S depth as well as Slot CB depth. I think Shawn Williams has earned a chance and I'd rather resign Iloka than Nelson, we also have Derron Smith who I'm hoping will get some chances. As for the dline we need in injection of athleticism, I think Peko's numbers are inflated due to having Atkins and Dunlap next to him and he can be replaced as well as Gilberry. We desperately need another top pass rusher. Hopefully Hardison and Williams can help. As for offense, I think the oline could use some better depth as I do not see Andre Smith coming back and Winston and Whit are on the tail end of their careers. I believe we are good at the guard position and hope that Trey Hopkins get's a better this year, however I feel we either need to draft a top flight center or grab a solid vet to either push Bodine or take his spot and allow him to get some work as a backup guard/center, he's just been too inconsistent. As for WR, I'd say Marvin Jones should be priority 1 and they should allow Sanu to test FA. We have Alford who could be a solid playmaker for us given the chance, and we should probably look to either draft a stud early or grab another guy who has the measurables. For the draft I'd say our biggest needs are LB/Pass Rusher/Depth. Edit **A few FA I might take a look at are Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall at linebacker as well as Morris Claiborne and Trumaine Johnson at cornerback. RE: Playing GM for a day - jfkbengals - 01-02-2016 Outside of Justin Tucker, I don't see any FAs who would be worth bringing in to replace our FAs due to the impact on the salary cap or the potential disruption to the chemistry of this team. I say sign Tucker to replace Nugent, re-sign all of our guys that can truly make the roster (ex. no need to sign Winston), and draft BPA accross the board but with an eye towards SLB, MLB, FS, C, CB (in other words, if #2 on the board fits a need and is close to #1, take #2) RE: Playing GM for a day - Joelist - 01-02-2016 We need to get Marvin Jones, Adam Jones, Reggie Nelson and Sanu re-signed. Then we can look at getting help at LB, DL, PK and CB. RE: Playing GM for a day - wildcats forever - 01-02-2016 A lot of work putting this together, Crowe. Thanks! Lots of homework to do on FA/draft (for me) before I could confidently choose individuals currently. As GM, I'd be looking for C, CB, and LB primarily regarding the draft. Also if there was an outstanding OL sitting there, I'd jump at him. BPA beyond that. I'd re-sign MLJ, Sanu, Hall, Jones, Nelson, Iloka, and Gilberry. Look for upgrades over the remaining free agents we have. RE: Playing GM for a day - bfine32 - 01-02-2016 Early thoughts: Our own: Iloka and Marvin Jones are the only must signs. I think a team throws some money at V. Rey and Sanu. I think Leon will be back after trying the market FA: I think we make another run at Fairley (Thompson and Sims walk) I would love to see us go after Wisniewski I would like to see us upgrade our "headache" (PacMan out, Harvin In) Draft: I see Edge rusher and CB RE: Playing GM for a day - milksheikh - 01-04-2016 (01-02-2016, 08:00 PM)bfine32 Wrote: Early thoughts: What makes Harvin a less of a headache than Pacman? Harvin has been a locker room disease according to many. I'm sorry, I rather take a top 12 corner than a "ok" receiver with character issues. RE: Playing GM for a day - Hammerstripes - 01-05-2016 I'll start with our own team. For those of you that know me from the old board, I am a very strong proponent of bringing back all of the players that we can and going into the draft with all 22 starters in place. We should have enough money to sign any of our guys that we want back. I am definitely letting the following guys walk at their current contract numbers: Andre Smith Lamur I want the following guy back, but not at the current rate: Leon Hall - love him, but not worth nearly $10 million I would also do everything in my power to resign the rest of the guys. Continuity on the roster is key in the NFL. Granted, a fair amount of those guys will get cut in training camp. It's hard to peg the draft at this point, but once it gets closer you can pretty much stack the board and take the BPA in almost every round. As far as free agency goes, I would love to see a splash move, but it just doesn't fit the Bengals style. For those of you that know me from the old board, I am a very strong proponent of bringing back all of the players that we can and going into the draft with all 22 starters in place. We should have enough money to sign any of our guys that we want back. I am definitely letting the following guys walk at their current contract numbers: RE: Playing GM for a day - Hammerstripes - 01-07-2016 http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/cap/2016/ At this point in time, it looks like the Bengals will have roughly $35 million in space to pay for all of the free agents that they want to bring back. The key players: Offense: Marvin Jones Sanu Andre Smith Defense Iloka Nelson Jones Should be very doable to bring all of those guys back IF they want to. Either way, this team should return all 22 starters if they want them back. And some of the guys that are Higher Priced or Should be also have things against them like Adam Jones and Leon Hall. Iloka i want resigned Nelson i would like to resign but not very long term.... We might lose one of the two but we cant lose both. Shawn williams i think can start. WR id like to see us pick up a free agent if Jones or Sanu gets away. James Wright should be back next year And at the same time while they havent played much yet there are some rookies or young players that could potentially fill in these spots waiting for chances. and while some people here critize the bengals for not playing the rookies more they get a chance to learn the system (which hopefully doesnt change too much if we lose coordinators) But if we have a mass Exodus of Free Agents we will see how well we really have been drafting the last few years. Only place i can see us looking for OL help is the Center position or Depth RE: Playing GM for a day - Hammerstripes - 01-08-2016 (01-02-2016, 06:16 PM)wildcats forever Wrote: A lot of work putting this together, Crowe. Thanks! Lots of homework to do on FA/draft (for me) before I could confidently choose individuals currently. I can't say I would be excited about drafting an outstanding OL. We took 2 last year and have 2 solid OGs. I would look at C, but other than that, there aren't any real needs on the offensive side of the ball at this point if Sanu and Jones are resigned. RE: Playing GM for a day - J24 - 01-09-2016 The guy that jumps out to me in free agency is Derek Wolf. Perfect Gillberry replacement!
